13. Please state some of the most positive aspects of the AEMT Master programme*

- good experience, it was interesting to meet peoplo from many parts of the world»
- Team work International environment PBL Practical cases»
- I think I got the things i.e. research writing, creative thinking, confidence and presenting skills during AEMT Master programme besides the specific expertise in different environmental analytical tools such as EIA, ERA, LCA, and indicators measuring techniques. the things which I described first made me so capable and able myself that I am carrying my PhD (although the things are slightly different) without too much external help and I think they will help me throughout my research career. If I conclude my remarks, I got some fundamental or basic things and principles that have changed my vision, thoughts and approaches towards handling tasks in academic and real life. »
- Presentations before class , problem based learning, field visits, report writing.»
- Insight in other cultures way of thinking/working, the only true envioronmental education at Chalmers, good reach of topics »
- international profile group work focus on planning & conducting measurement campaigns numerous presentations»
- The multi-ethnic background of the students. »
- That there was real problems that we investigated and didn"t just read books about the different situations. »
- good content of the different themes»
- Opened my mind to other fields»
- learning to deal with people, hands on learning was excellent»
- Filled the gap that I had in environmental engineering.»
- The practical tasks and report writing. The field trips were fantastic also. The fourth theme was also the best of the themes, partially because of the great teachers in that subject.»
- The program is well designed to cover the most important areas of Environment. The hands on training is the best approach to learn. For me it was just bad luck had to move to Canada where really Environmental jobs are not easy to get. As when I came here they were actually laying off people from Environmental Departments»
- Exposure to new fields of research that could be launched in my home country. A good piece of paper to launch a researc career.»
- Exposure to international students and different ways of perceiving issues. Improving multicultural communication skills. Establishing lifelong friendships.»
- Wholistic view of environmental burdens (cause-effect). »
- PBL»
- I especially liked the learning method based on few courses and lot of group and individual work based on real case studies.»
- Very practical learning over a wide body of knowledge»
- It gave me not only the experience abroad, which is relevant whichever carrer I take, but also the substantial support to my resposnabilities as project leader of ISO14001 certification at Volvo Brasil, which was my first job.»
- Working with other people, developing communication techniques with people outside your own area, working in English, working research-oriented.»
- Especially last quarter with Sverkar Molander. We have learnt a lot about group work and writing scientific paper , that was most valuable for us and it helped me a lot while doing master thesis»
- Group discussions, Presentations and report writing.»
- I am still to get a job related to my field.»
- Problem based learning enabled me to learn by doing and group work simulates real-life situation in workplaces.»
- To be able to share international experience with other students from around the world»
- Mixed background of students. High competence level of lecturers.»
- multicultural, real examples to work on, good teachers»
- It provided me an overview of many environmental aspects, and I have been able to develop skills for carrying out scientific research.»
- Interaction with other international students »
- It was absolutely led me to research well, but it wasnt very usefull for people who want to work in an consulting egineering firm! we have studied in a very small scale!!!»
- discussions in group working) exam, seminar(presentation and opposition) and a lot of thing »

14. What do you think about the pedagogical approach of the AEMT Master programme? Did you benefit from the extensive group working, project writing and presentation activities?*

- it was very good, »
- Yes. I use that everyday in my work»
- yes, defintely and the things I mentioned in section 13 are the result of these activities.»
- Yes I think I got benefited.»
- It was ok. Very hard work to work in groups with people that never worked like that ever before. The educational level varied between courses, most of them were good.»
- yes. before I started the AEMT, I was enrolled in a traditional engineering programme: lectures, calculation exercises, exams. Only one minor project, and only one presentation in 4 years. »
- Too much group work and project write up. A little bit more of shorter individual problem solving assignments and lectures would have been beneficial.»
- It is a good way but because of everybodies background it is difficult and I think that it is important to have smaller groups so that everybody feels involved. »
- Yes»
- Yes»
- I thrived in such a style, I think it was absolutely the best way to learn. Working in groups is more like "real life" but I think the screening process for students is too soft. There should be some way to gauge individual performance in a group as well. »
- Yes, It is a good way to learn.»
- I very much liked the approach, and the problem based learning. I personally feel i benefited a lot. Having tutors/assistants in each group was also very good.»
- Yes very much. It made me a better person in all the fields of research, presenting and writing. »
- Good and frustrating, but in the end it prepares you for a project environment in the workplace.»
- As part of the AEMT launch, I enjoyed the PBL, multiple presentation activities, field trips, etc. »
- PBL is a good way to start thinking yourself. More presentations! Being able to communicate environmental issues is fundamental!»
- As mentioned above, PBL was the best part of the program»
- Yes, I feel I benefited a lot. The pedagogical approach improved critical thinking and research skills.»
- This approach is very similar to a work situation so it is great preparation for future employment»
- Completely satisfied.»
- It was different. Found it effective if one already has gone through a more traditional education and has the maturity for it.»
- It was entirely new for us when we began the course, but after finishing the course we become masters in each aspect»
- yes»
- I found it quite formative professionally»
- Yes. Not only did I learn the lessons but also learned how to get along and work along a multicultural and multi-disciplinary environment.»
- Through this programme we were trained to work in groups, write a report and present it which is a good exercise to start with a real job»
- Yes, indeed, especially writing reports in English and express myself in another language.»
- yes, definitely»
- Every activity in life can provide some benefit. The pedagogical approach also. Consider that I have invested a lot of money, time, energy, etc. and I did not get what I was supposed to: technical skills.»
- Very good and relevant»
- it was great for group working and presentation»
- yes »

15. Over the duration of the AEMT Master programme, were subjects covered well? Was there anything that you missed or lacked?*

- water and soil theme were covered very well, the last theme (I dont remember the name)was very well covered also. The air theme was the worse, no a lot of thing to do, or to learn. »
- Yes. It is always possible to go deeper in each subject, but time is a limitation.»
- Yes, I think, I missed some of things, but again it is me who missed or lacked the things. As there are many subjects under each quarter theme, so it is quite obvious to give some part more preference and less to other, but it also varies due to one"s personal interests. »
- It would be better if we had more lectures in class.I dont mean there is some thing wrong with the group work or field visits. I mean the class lecture needs a little more emphasis.»
- The last course on Environmental frameworks could have been more clear and not so fussy. Sverker talk a lot, have less to say.»
- The subjects were covered well. »
- Can not really rememeber! But, I believe some of the more basic scientific aspects of some environmental issues was not covered that well covered. For example, the basic (geo)physics of climate change was not covered well.»
- I think it could have been more intense, and it could have covered more in all themes. »
- In most cases, yes. I remember that I wanted to learn more GIS (more pracical work).»
- Not covered well. Gave good exposure to a lot of things but only on surface. Gave the edge.»
- aquatic was good. geology was terrible. »
- Everything good, but not so deep as I expected.»
- No, not really. »
- As I was one of the Graduates of the first AEMT program offered, I found it to be very educative and informative. The topics covered reflected to the real world issues.»
- Resource/ecological economics was missing at that stage. Today that is especially prevalent since the coming of carbon trading.»
- More global warming and international conventions would have been useful.»
- We were educated in measurement techniques, but there was no connection to actual work within a company. How to apply the knowledge in a company perspective?»
- a bit of ecology and (eco)toxicology would have been nice.»
- They were well covered and I feel I acquired the fundamentals in Environmental sciences.»
- There was a lot of learning packed into a short period of time - I don"t think trying to do more would have been effective»
- I laked some more enphasis on management subjects.»
- some subjects were better covered than others. I missed in some parts what was the point of it all. Especially obvious when one goes from one subject to another, from one dept to another. A bit inconsistent sometimes.»
- Everything was taught well except Geology, we didn’,t get the proper advises from our group project supervisors. »
- I think everything is covered.»
- I can only develop an opinion to this question when I get into my field proper»
- There were some missing subjects such as environmental impact assessment (EIA) and ecological footprint analysis (EFA) among others.»
- there is no guidance on how to make a good report with international standard»
- I would have like a more focused program in which subjects are really covered in detail rather than generally.»
- everything OK»
- Air theme was the best: clear, concise, in an understandable level, practical. I missed more technical knowledge and practices.»
- In general very thorough. Maybe -issues from developing countries could have focused stronger in the 4th part - global problems and cycles»
- yep! we havent work well on EIA part and I feel this shortage»
- aquatic, air, and sustainable development i covered well geochemistry and geology i partially covered it well »

16. How would you describe the time and effort dedicated to the Master Thesis Project: was it a good experience?

- It was one of the most interesting experiences that I have had.»
- yes»
- If someone ask me the best time and period during my whole period of AEMT Master programme, the answer is the time during master thesis. It was good experience in having all the resources and time which were needed to do what I want to do. In this regard, I salute my supervisor who appreciate and give me allowance and full support to work on my own idea of research. That"s why i think, i was free to chose the topic, to make the layout of my work, methodology of moving further and the availability of resources i.e printing, scanning, telephone, free access to kitchen acessories and sationary goods and status of being treated as a researcher. »
- Yes it was good.»
- Yes, especially Yuliya took a lot of responsibillity trying activate the exchange student outside school, which is very important. The courses were good in general, of course there some teachers that could plan better an work on their pedagogy.»
- Especially the group work was a good experience. The work load however differed a lot between individuals. I think that some people got a degree almost without doing any work. »
- For me it was good but I could have gotten more help from my supervisors.»
- It is a very good experience»
- Brilliant experience»
- Yes, it was great. I had a good project and finished in reasonable time. The key there is good supervision. »
- Yes and frustrating some times (when things do not go as you planned).»
- Very good experience. »
- Yes, it was great experience and worth while.»
- Yes, but mine was already identified before going to Sweden based on work we had done in industry. Therefore it was very relevant.»
- The Master"s Thesis was a fantastic opportunity to learn equipment, skills, methodology and develop fruitful relationships. It led to my pursuit of a Licentiate in the same topic.»
- I attended the first year it was held and at some points the workload was too heavy (Annika Ekvall is an ambitios woman...), but I think the experience was passed on so the second year was a bit too lazy (according to personal contacts).»
- significant research effort and introduction to PhD studies, good experience»
- Yes it was a very valuable experience to move towards my first position in the industry.»
- I could have benefitted from a more structured thesis project, but that was up to me to decide»
- Very good.»
- Yes. Having already written a thesis in my previous degree, I could take advantage of the time to do the thesis and focus it on what interested me.»
- It was really a wonderful experience.»
- it was good experience.»
- Quite good and I got wonderful support from my department and supervisors»
- I can say that I have spent almost 90% of time and effort on my thesis and it was a very good experience though I could have opted to stay longer in Sweden to attend the graduation ceremony if I had extension of my scholarship.»
- it was worthed»
- Yes»
- yes, definitely»
- I did not start my thesis»
- Good experience - I enjoyed working with a swedish company. It brought insights/perspectives that I used later in live»
- great»
- it is a very nice time, i got a lot of information and i add a good experiences in my researcher form my supervisor and other staff in my department »

18. Please state some important aspects of the AEMT Master programme that you think should be changed

- It was the chance that I had to open my main to the world»
- as I have come to know from my juniors that many things have changed, the way of making groups (now on personal choice) and giving individual and group reports and tasks (not necessarily everyone has to present), I think should not be. I know, there are some little trouble always going among group members but after completing everything one can realize the things he or she must do or change. so its better that teachers made (themselves) groups by mixing students from different countries randomly. I also think that everyone in the group should come and present his work or even he or she is opposing to other. At the end, I would like to thank again and will be very happy if approached further for any survey or enqueries.»
- Some times lectures are not clearly communicated. The accent and fast english makes it difficult for the students to understand. The english should be a little slow and clear to understand. This is not the case with every teacher, this is the case with a few teachers.»
- More effort on making sure exchange student have a good time here so that they have the energy to study too. »
- Since I was part of AEMT 97/98, I don"t know what the programme looks like know. »
- Higher education for those who apply, in my year it varied a lot and I felt that we could have learned more if everybody was on the same level. Smaller groups in the group work. Harder exams. More information, classes during the themes. »
- The title of the master...which doesn"t correspond to what was learnt and which need to be explained to recruiters. »
- Screening for student should be tougher (although I realize that there is a financial aspect behind this), More chance for individual evaluation, better structure in some courses, keep up the field trips. »
- Go deeper in knowledge in each subject.»
- Can not come up with anything...»
- Nothing, the program was designed very well»
- English/scientific writing should be introduced (if it hasn"t already). And also some introductory modules to prepare for the workplace, e.g. project and financial management. In my current environment you sit with many scientists that know very little about good business practices.»
- It may not relevant because it"s been 13 years since I took the program. The strength of the faculty has been their willingness to listen and adapt the program based on student feedback.»
- connect more to actual work within companies. Bring in knowledge from companies into the programme.»
- I don"t see anything that should be changed!»
- I had some dificulties in relating the grading and master title in Sweden with the one in Brazil. I have not yet managed to get it officially accepted as a Master"s title but rather as a Especialization.»
- There should be a clearer "red line" through it, something that ties the themes together.»
- Everything was taught well except Geology, we didn’,t get the proper advises from our group project supervisors.»
- Open book examination»
- There is a conflict as to whether to called the degree a Master of Science in Environmental technology, Science or Engineering.»
- There should be more training in the use of software applications such as ArcView GIS, MathLab and other environmental simulation/modelling.»
- grading system and group work should be improved»
- More focus on fewer subjects.»
- check better the English level of the participants.»
- a)"Group working, project writing and presentation activities" are (very useful) tools (just tools). They should not be objectives: Deliver what it has been promised. »
- Schedule exam dates longer in advance»
- that was a great experience, especially becasue we had classmates from all overr the world and I really enjoyed my classes»
- give more time in each course to obtain huge amount from information in environmental and engineering »
