6. Comments? Thoughts? Suggestions?

- The amount of hours put in teaching are so many more than the "multiplication factors" suggest, when registering the department work hours. If you want us PhD students to do a good job teaching, which I think most of us want to do, this needs to be looked over. »
- How do I know % of time for my teaching? lecture classes hours? % of salary? how do you count % spent on supervision? Given theses unknowns embedded in p.2, please consider my answers with equivalently high uncertainty of ~50%.»
- Would like a system where the competence of MC2 is available for more of the student body at Chalmers!»
- -Teaching opportunities can be limited at MC2 and usually need to be looked for. Information about what duties may be available are not very clear (for both teaching and department duties in general). -Department duty teaching available at MC2 typically have low adjustment factors (ie. x1 or x1.5 for clean room training, masters supervision, labs) Compared to x4 for lectures. This can make it difficult to get department duty from only teaching at MC2.»
- PhD students could be more direct involved. Supervisors tend to filter or even ignore for example bachelor student project requests. It could be good for the students, to learn to write project descriptions, and Chalmers, which would get more teachers and projects! »
- Could we have interdepartemental teaching? Why dont take over some courses (basic physics, optics etc.) from other departments that are overloaded by teaching duties?»
- A way to attract BAs is through teaching. I hope our department get more teaching. However, I do not believe in a BA nanotechnology program. It is difficult enough to get students to the other programs. They are even grouping engineering educations (ex EDIT). What I belive should be done is adding a experimental course in nanotechnology at BA level. They have optional courses in the physics and chemical physics program during the spring. Use this time to advertise through lecturing. »
- Avdelningschef NFL :)»
- yes, the eternal problem, we have too few students. I"ve been thinking quite a bit what I could do to increase the number, as a lecturer. alas, it seems very little. I managed to get the course enlisted in other programs but it always ends up that the course attracts from 4 (bad year) to 10 (good year) students. I have been even tempted to run the course every second year, but decided against it, since this would ruin the continuity. really, there seems not much we can do at MC2. perhaps, as an afterthough, this might be the result of the fact that at MC2 we take great pride in our reserach (like everyone else for that matter) but there is no back-coupling to teaching. the status and recognition at MC2 comes from fund raising, not giving good courses. last year I"ve got 4.6 or so in grade for the course (which was the result of a long and systematic effort to bring the course to the perfection), nobody really noticed, or cared to notice. thinking of it, perhaps, it is not so strange that we do not have that many students after all. my two cents...»
- I give a few lectures of a PhD course. This course is given most years, but not every, due to few participants.»
