Goals and goal fulfilment

The programme syllabus states the goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the education. The learning outcomes are (excerpts):

After the master programme in Automotive Engineering the students should be able to

•,,,,,,,, identify and discuss vehicles as complex systems from a technical and a social perspective through a broad platform in automotive engineering.

•,,,,,,,, analyse new technical challenges and to create technical advancements in the automotive industry by three specialisation tracks, Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics or Safety.

•,,,,,,,, synthesize and evaluate automotive systems and products in terms of direct use and lifecycle analysis through consideration of environmental and economic aspects.

•,,,,,,,, through applications and practice
o utilize automotive related IT- and product development tools.
o demonstrate skills necessary for managing and contributing to team-based engineering activities and projects in a multi-cultural environment.

Programme layout

The Automotive Engineering programme consists of one introduction course about automotive vehicles and industry followed by 3 courses, one from each of the areas of Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics and Safety. Last two mandatory courses are chosen from 2 of the 3 areas. Depending on preferences, the student can then take two extra courses within one or two of the specialisations.

- It shall be interesting to offer automotive based applied controls alongside classical automotive technology.» (Good)
- Since it is called automotive engineering, it should indeed cover all of the important systems. I applied to this program to obtain a moderate understanding of all the main systems while focusing on powertrain. I saw it beneficial, for example, to study vehicle dynamics.» (Good)

8. Do the mandatory courses cover the main topics that you believe an Automotive Engineer should know?

These courses are Internal combustion engines, Engineering of automotive systems, Vehicle dynamics, Vehicle and traffic safety.

- Many of the mandatory courses are way too easy» (To some extent)
- The technical requirement in some of the courses is embarssingly low and does not make the student make an effort for it. The program can not set the level to the people that does not have a proper engineering background from their bachelour program. The only Challenging course is Internal Combustion Engines by Sven Andersson, the rest is of poor quality. The vehicle dynamics course is good content wise but the course material and the lecturer need to improve alot for it to be relevant. » (To a certain extent, yes)
- ICE - yes. VD - yes. VTS - needed, but the course should teach me something more than what some Volvo youtube videos and some hours on wikipedia can teach me. There was a lot of why safety systems are good, but not much on how they operate, and nothing as to good practices on how to integrate them properly (where you want to place sensors for example). EAS - delete the course immediately! I will reiterate myself: If you learn anything in this course, you should not have applied to a MASTER"S degree in automotive engineering! The sad part is one or two people do learn something. Why do you let these people in? The vast lack of knowledge cannot be made up in 1.5 years before the thesis and their entry into the industry will degrade the reputation of this program at Chalmers. Erasmus students take MPAUT courses because they are easy and lets them have time to party. Is this the reputation you want? I"m quite disappointed by it.» (To a certain extent, yes)
- EoAS needs more on what individual components a vehicle consists of, i think some students who arent especialy intrested in cars before need more on that subject. Perhaps some non-mandatory tasks.» (To a large extent, but not completely)
- In my opinion, Engineering of automotive systems course was more like college level, then university (especially master program).» (To a large extent, but not completely)

- There"s nothing on frame design...well, apart from a ppt in EAS that shows the difference between a ladder frame and unibody construction.» (Yes)
- I miss a course in CFD with focus on both aerodynamics and engine flow. This is a necessary tool when working with engines and this course could now only be taken in the master program Applied Mechanics and are very theoretical, although it"s very good. The course also coincide with the course powertrain mechanics and the automotive project course, therefor it is hard to take all courses and get the base that I think is needed for an Engineer with focus on powertrain and engines.» (Yes)

- Engineering of automotive systems needs to have somebody that knows more about the whole system that is responsible for it there is alot of guest lecturers and alot of varying quality and level on the lectures. In the safety course the LS-dyna assignmnet and the people handling it have no interesst in teaching, very poor. » (Yes)

- EAS and Vehicle Traffic and Safety, instead have an internship, even the RVAD course is not upto the mark.» (Yes)
- Engineering of automotive systems could be taught in the bachelors degree.» (Yes)
- The first course Engineering of Automotive systems is a joke. The examinare don"t know anything about vehicles. Change examiner!» (Yes)
- i think that engineering of automotive systems was a waste of time and need a major revision» (Yes)
- EAS, already explained. VTS, already explained.» (Yes)
- Engineering of automotive systems could be an optional course, it"s simple enough to pass on prior knowledge only» (Yes)
- I think that the course Engineering of Automotive systems is an important course to have in the beginning of the programme, but the content of the course is not satisfying. The course needs a clearer structure and focus areas could be revised. One example is the suspension area and assignment which is way to deep and big and with an complicated programme that is not possible to understand in that short time. Another assignment in vehicle dynamics would be helpful for the upcoming course in the same subject. » (Yes)
- Engineering of Automotive systems - heavily revised. Vehicle and traffics safety - improved.» (Yes)

11. Impressions of the Powertrain specialisation.

What is your impression of the

Matrisfråga

- To little theory on different systems on how they really work. Missing a real problem definition on the assignments and also how they are managed. »
- Powertrain Mechanics course is excellent.»
- 1)Case studies in Powertrain mechanics regarding development of certain technolgies can be included. 2)Advanced ICE is purely GT-Power based and could be more practical instead.»
- Fell that the advanced IC engine course could have more content, it seems to be very general in my opinion.»
- I would like more advanced courses in the area to select from.»
- the formula student project was very good in respect to obtaining practical knowledge. Uncertain about the coupling to industrial problems during courses»
- ICE was good, but review for me. This is a course the US covers in it"s Bachelor"s degrees. I did learn much more about diesels, though. Sven is good. The engine teardown was good for non PT people. HVC was also good. Nice to learn how and when to use power from the different sources. ICE Adv was disappointing. I wanted to finish the rest of the ICE book but instead it was a course on R&D methods and current research at Chalmers. Needs a name change to reflect what it is. Engine creation project in GT Power was fun, but the course doesn"t teach you how to create a good engine, just how to test one. Huge disconnect there. I didn"t take PM because I looked at a previous test and knew almost everything on it. I had covered it in my Bachelor"s (once again).»

14. What is your impression of the automotive project courses: Automotive Engineering Project and Chalmers Formula Student?

Please comment your answer!

Matrisfråga

- The only thing that have made me very satisfied with the automotive engineering program is Chalmers Formula Student, the amount of knowledge I gained and project experience have made me a far better engineer than I would have ever been if not for Chalmers Formula Student. The level of that project is delivering highly educated engineers that get superior problem solving abilities compared to all other students graduating this program. The significance of this becomes even clearer after a year participating and going back to attending regular courses working with people that have not participated in the project. Talking with people at the University not involved in the project I"m a bit disappointed that a larger interest is not shown and I think that the significance of this project is not fully appreciated by the staff at the institutions. The educational value could easily be expanded to include other courses which are dealing with the same problem which are faced when building a competition vehicle. Making students involved in a real life project makes the engagement much higher and would render a better education. »
- Chalmers Formula Student gives both a theoretical and a hands-on experience and an experience in project work that no other course I have attended at chalmers have ever done! »
- Additional topics to be included in the AEP, and more infrastructure to be made accessible. »
- 1)Introduction to team work and goal achievement 2)Good practice before Master Thesis work 3)Should include more projects by the academic year»
- Needs more administration, it was a bit unclear on what should be done when»
- It"s the best course on Chalmers! That was the reason for me to chose Chalmers.»
- The project demands that alot of the students work solely on the project during the summer an idea i had was that there could be a summer course available only to formula students in order to get CSN during the summer»
- The fact that the department keeps trying to kill this course disturbs me. I had 5 years of non-credited, low funded FS during my Bachelor"s, then worked as a PT engineer for 2yrs before coming to Chalmers. The skills you learn in FS advance the education in the automotive engineering field far beyond the average student. Despite my previous experience, a properly funded program allowed me to learn so much more and apply so much more of my knowledge than before. Just the design for manufacturing learned in this program is argument enough for it. I could speak at length on how this program is the only saving grace of the otherwise disturbing inadequacy of the MPAUT program.»
