Learning outcomes and examination

Learning outcome (after completion of this course, the student should be able to)
- describe and explain the non-linear mechanical behaviour of slabs, plates and discontinuity regions of reinforced concrete loaded until failure,
- describe and explain various approaches to analyse these reinforced concrete members and express limitations and ranges of validity,
- analyse, design and detail reinforced concrete slabs, plates and discontinuity regions on the basis of plastic analysis,
- perform design work in project teams concerning structural analysis, reinforcement design and detailing of flat slabs using linear FE-analysis, and present the result in a technical report with sketches,
- critically review technical reports concerning design work based on FE-analysis,
- describe and explain the mechanical behaviour of prestressed concrete members loaded until failure, especially in relation to reinforced concrete elements,
- analyse, design and detail statically determinate structural elements of prestressed concrete.

- It was a bit tough in the beginning but we told Mario and Björn and they increased the amount of hours availiable for consultaion. It was appriciated alot.» (Very good)

- It is quite rough. The other course geotechnincs had nothing to do with my 8 weeks. I only studied concrete... So it is a bit to stiff for a 7.5 cred course.» (more than 80%)

- The lecture form with theory and exercises mixed. I think that it worked really well and that one had to be active during the entire lectures. »

14. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Consider changing a large project regarding slabs, which credited a totalt 20% of the grade. To a more on going project conserning all different course elements. Now we just did the slabs in the project and the slabs was basically the easiest part of the course. A smaller project regarding both continuity regions and prestressing would be better.»

- The FEM-project needs to be better organized. We spent much more time trying to figure out how abaqus works than we did working with the actual concrete slab.»

- There was too little time for the part prestressed concrete. Maybe some time can be borrowed from slabs or strut & tie. The FEM project: a lot of time went to writing the rapport, which felt repetitive to write. Maybe it can be slimmed by a few chapters. Also better information about how to work in abaqus would help. Most of the time goes to model in abaqus because it is such a non user friendly software. »
