Genomsnitt: 2 - Not much new material is presented which differs from previous bachelor courses in mechanical engineering. This was disappointing since this is a master level course. » (Small extent)
- Some people should not lecture.» (Small extent)
- The project work itself was by far the most important for learning » (Some extent)
- Being a graduate of Mechanical engineering at Chalmers made a lot of the course seem like repetition.» (Some extent)

Very badly» | | 5 | | 21% |
Rather badly» | | 3 | | 13% |
Rather well» | | 9 | | 39% |
Very well» | | 6 | | 26% |
Genomsnitt: 2.69 - Use Ping pong! Skip facebook and e-mail. It does not work and it is unserious. Facebook is a social network and I dont want to have information feb via this channel.
Little information in general about quiz time, results. No information at all about the exhibition! » (Very badly)
- The amount of communication has been kept to a minimum from the teachers. There has always been uncertainties due to information coming from different sources, email, course webpage and Facebook. The Facebook-page has been poorly maintained and can be seen as a really non-serious attempt from the teachers" side to communicate. » (Very badly)
- You didn"t get the information needed but if you did it was late or badly expressed» (Very badly)
- Constantly received conflicting information regarding deadlines etc. The teachers and supervisors tended to say one thing while the examiner said another making it impossible to know who to listen to. The examiner also seemed unwilling to discuss any issues that arose from this making it difficult to sort things out!» (Very badly)
- A lecturere didn"t show up to one lecture, for the exhibition gate there was no time outlined for when the booths could be constructed and no information on where items used for this exhibit could be stored before or after.» (Rather badly)
- Comparing with the bachelors thesis I would say that this course administration was more smooth.» (Rather well)
Study climate9. How were the opportunities for asking questions and getting help?23 svarande

I did not seek help» | | 0 | | 0% |
Genomsnitt: 3.21 - Lars and christoffer need to work as a team, several times I got forwarded to the other person who forwarded me back again.» (Very poor)
- When several students attending this course and one in Risk management, there was a collision of two mandatory events. When the course administration for this course was approached, they were unwilling to work towards a compromise. They basically said that their course was more important and that the other one should be skipped. Even if they have every right to enforce the rules it was extremely unhelpful.» (Very poor)
- When questions have been asked, usually there is no one able to answer them, even if the questions are only regarding administrative matters. Usually Christoffer and Lars are refering to each other for more information.» (Very poor)
- Good with the tutor. Really bad with the "helper of the examinator".» (Rather poor)
- Supervisor did a good job!» (Very good)
10. How well has cooperation between you and your fellow students worked?23 svarande

Genomsnitt: 3.08 - It is too long project. Three periods with the same students, it does not work. I have felt really bad many times and have been close to drop out of the course.» (Rather poorly)
- We had quite a disastrous team environment at some occations..» (Rather poorly)
- Large differences in commitment between team members, people leaving the country several weeks before hand-in of final presentation etc.» (Rather poorly)
- Cooperation was generally excellent within the project group! 2 out of 7 members did however not contribute in the slightest to the project work causing problems for the rest of the group! Hopefully this is reflected in the team member assessment and individual grades however.» (Very well)

Genomsnitt: 3.56 - The learning part(lectures and book) required quite low workload compared to the project, which took much time. I don"t think it took too much time though.
» (High)
- Because of problems in the group the workload got big for others» (High)
- Was fun though so the high workload was not really negative!» (High)
- Just crazy... No guidelines, the supervisor wanted always more.» (Too high)
12. How was the total workload this study period?23 svarande

High» | | 12 | | 52% |
Too high» | | 4 | | 17% |
Genomsnitt: 3.78 - The combination of this course with the project management course made the last study period rather extreme in terms of workload but I was prepared for that.» (High)
- Mainly caused by formula student. » (Too high)
- I wish I would have been able to put in more work in my other couse, but there was no time.» (Too high)
Summarizing questions13. What is your general impression of the course?23 svarande
Poor» | | 3 | | 13% |
Fair» | | 3 | | 13% |
Adequate» | | 4 | | 17% |
Good» | | 8 | | 34% |
Excellent» | | 5 | | 21% |
Genomsnitt: 3.39 - Bad guidance. No follow up. Generelly bad impression of the teachers at the fair. Why is it so difficult to stop by, ask some questions, let us demonstrate the prototype and tell us we did a good job?
Feally bad that the exhibition was not announced. There should be posters allover campus and on the website. It is a pity!» (Poor)
- Bad level and ofte the wrong information!» (Poor)
- Most disappointing was the lack of commitment from the teachers. I can honestly say that I"m really unsure what Christoffer Levandowski has been doing during the course, which arguably should raise some questions since usually an PhD-candidate is obligated to spend 20% of their working time teaching. I can neither say that Christoffer has taught me anything (rather presenting the lecturers) or that I know what he has contributed with.» (Poor)
- Good selection of projects to choose from and the general approach of leaving much of the work up to the students were the strongest points of this course.» (Good)
14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?- The workshop»
- I dont know. The projects i guess»
- External lecturers.»
- Team Member Assessments»
- The tutors.»
- The industrial-based projects»
- the brain storming section and every thing »
- In my opinion long projects are always good for the learning»
- The project work with close company involvement!»
- The wide selection of projects to choose from.»
15. What should definitely be changed to next year?- The quiz system.»
- The timing of the workshop should not be early»
- Both Lars and Christoffer should be more active and be available on campus. The 3 period- project is too long
»
- The workshop should be earlier to generate ideas as quickly as possible.»
- Make the survey shorter. Expecting students to answer 35+ questions, most with a written response, is unreasonable.»
- The "leadership" of the course»
- More commited teaching and support for advanced product development projects which requires more attention.»
- As mentioned earlier, ditch the small tests»
- Find a new examiner! Christoffer Levandowski is very difficult to work with and the communication between him and the other people involved in the course seem to have been very limited! This has been percieved as the primary cause of problems thoughout the course.»
- Either change the date of the final presentation to after hand-in of the report or simuoltanuosly. Or have a mandatory presence at the time of the hand-in of the report.»
16. Additional comments- Quizzes:
Expressing what was relevant to learn for the examinations was poorly executed. Apparently the knowledge from the book was never interesting to test, which is kind of strange, since it"s the course book. Reading the chapters in the course book has been redundant, since the quizzes only considered the lectures. This can be one reason why the scoring of the quizzes was quite low in the class, since students have read the chapters in the course book in vain. Anyhow the amount of 0"s in the class shows that this method of teaching-examination can be improved since either the teaching or the examination has suffered.»
- It would be better for the project team if the industrial company contacts and the project supervisor were better coordinated so that hand-ins presentations etc. could be prepared for both simoultanuosly. This would also make it easier to finish the project, as of now there are still loose ends left.»
The project17. What is your over-all opinion about the project course and that it is based on an assignment from an industrial company?- Excellent idea. Gives extremely valuable hands-on experience. »
- It"s a great experience! »
- I find it good and encouraging to pursue as it is a real project which would add value to the industry.»
- Really good guidance and support from the company»
- Basically a good idea but it has to be made sure that this company also has the time to be there for the students. The company should be local and the representative should always be avalable.»
- MY overall opinion is that it was decent.»
- It can be good if the right information is given in time.»
- It"s always good to have a project based on real industrial-based assignments»
- Good. Industrial company assignment gives it a bit of a "professional touch" to the project»
- The time spent examining the appropriateness of putting the project idea into the course was obviously low. Spend some energy on getting good projects»
- Excellent! »
- I like it, it brings more of a long wanted practical aspect to the academic work. Even better if there would have been a possibility to work alongside the industrial people in more practical projects ( But that might be up to the master"s thesis) »
18. What do you think about the course introduction including the project presentation and project selection process?- Good. »
- good»
- They were upto expectation.»
- It was okey, but bad information on forehand»
- Very good. But I would have liked a categorising of the projects by the course leaders. Some project seemed rather different in the beginning than what they turned out then later. We had somebody in the group whi did not fit at all to this project. If she had known that our project was a rather mechanical one, she would not have taken it.»
- It was good.»
- Ok»
- It would be nice to upload the presentations on the course webpage so simplify the selection process for the students. »
- Good.»
- Generally messy and unprofessional»
- Very nice layout! »
- Very good, wide selection of projects.»
19. Did the project presentation and project memo provide relevant and useful information for project initiation?- Yes. »
- yes»
- Yes, they did»
- Yes all info was provided. The info about that printing doesn"t have to be initiated before the final deadline could have been named in there.»
- It was sufficient.»
- Ok»
- Should be beneficial to also have a planning report as a deliverable as well as a "team contract" to facilitate the start-up phase of the project.»
- Yes, at least for our project. For the other projects too I think.»
- Yes!»
- Yes»
20. How did you experience the formation of the project team?- Good system. »
- good»
- I am satisfied with the composition.»
- It was bad. There were nothing said about workload. I actually had to skip two exams because the workload was too high and i did not get "permission" from the group to study other stuff during easter break»
- No problems.»
- Being given the option to select what project one wanted to work in was good.»
- Good»
- More effort should be put into the process of selecting team members for each project. If it"s something I have learned during this course is the danger of having people involved in projects which are not enough competent and are unwilling to gain this competence. Even though people have claimed to be commited to the project, it has not been so. One of the reasons is that they have not fully understood the complexity of the project and have instead played "ostrich in the sand" when problems arise. It would be beneficial to emphasize more on what should be expected from the group members in each project in terms of competence to solve this problem.»
- ok»
- A bit Odd that people having a project as their first choice did not get it while people having the same project as their secondary choice got it. »
- Too large teams for this kind of task in my opinion, could easily have worked with half the size of the current teams. »
21. What do you think about your project team and how the team-work has functioned during the project?- Rather difficult in the beginning but getting better and better. At the end very good team-work. »
- ok, 7 is too many, I would say 5 students would have worked better.»
- The project team is rather professional and has coordinated fairly well.»
- Good and bad. The supervisor should have been moreunderstanding»
- No team spirit due to opportunistic team members who only wanted to input a minum amount of work to get passed. That was very boring and turns down motivation of other team members who wanted to excel.»
- A bit bumpy from time to time but overall they were great.»
- Ok»
- My project team was composed by people who were not competent enough or commited enough for the task of the project. This had a really destructive impact on project and what matters most is that these people were unable to identify themselves as a part of the group and resented to work togheter as a group. The solution was to split up all the work in smaller subgroups and put it all togheter in the end, which I personally think is not the best way to work as a group.»
- Most of the members worked and collaborated well. A few mebers did not doo a great job.»
- For 5 out of 7 members it worked well! 2 members did however contribute very little, even when asked to do things, increasing the workload for the rest of the group!»
- Rather poorly especially in the early stages, there were some moments of good team work though although I think this was due to a lot of external pressure. This might in part be due to the large size of the team.»
22. Has the team-building exercise with the psychologist been useful?- Somewhat. »
- very usefull and fun! »
- To be honest, not that much..but the lessons presented was definitely relevant.»
- No, silly, because we already had conflicts during the session. Put it earlier, week 1 because the woman who had it from skovde was very good and funny!»
- I thought it was a great opportunity to make people aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately my team members completely ignored the importance of such an assignment and regarded the outut as "just another psychology crap". So the whole thing had no effect.»
- Not really and this was the fourth one of these group dynamics exercises I"ve done.»
- We couldn"t do itt beacuse of that "the course helper" messed up.»
- Unfortunately no, since the exercise has been treated non-seriously. This holds especially true for the ones who later became a group dynamic problem, which would certainly had been benefited from the exercise, if they had paid more attention. »
- Not very, but a bit interesting.»
- It was fun but not very helpfull! It was also held way to late in the project to have any real teambuilding impact!»
- Not particuliry, it should have been conducted in the very beginning of teh project in that case (ealry in the pre-study marketing course)»
23. What do you think about the contents of your project in terms of complexity, difficulty and suitability for this course?- Excellent project. »
- a really interesting project! »
- The project which seemed to be not that difficult in the beginning turned out to be very detailed and long. I found it suitable to the course because it contained all the facets required to be tried in the PD process.»
- It was complex. That I like! I really hope thar will show in the grade as well. »
- The project was very suitable for this course. It was very broad and this led to some problems in the beginning because we had to choose were we could put our focus on.»
- It was very complex in character which made it difficult to meet all the course goals that almost assume a consumer product is to be made.»
- Our project was much more complex and difficult than the rest of the projects and I myself believe to have been prepared for the challence. Sadly, this is not true for other team members. I think that we should have been given more help from this course to be able tackle even these kind of product development projects. The abstracness nature of the project makes it so different from projects which are more "every-day" products. Thereby said I don"t want to say that these kind of projects should not be presented, on the contrary I would like to see more complex and difficult projects in the future. I can see though there"s a need for the course to give more competence to the students.»
- Good. suited well.»
- Perfectly balanced!»
- Appropriate, perhaps it could have been a bit more construction (engineering) elements. (More practical)»
24. To what extent have you read and made use the course book by Ulrich and Eppinger in the project work?- Quite extensively. »
- used it a bit, a good book»
- Yes, I am thorough with the content and would attribute the credit to the 3 tests at different times.»
- Some stuff was very good. Other was difficult to apply to our project»
- To a great extent in the first half of the course when generating concepts. To no extent afterwards which is a pity because it contains many interesting chapters that could have been useful for this course.»
- Quite a lot, but this was mainly because they WERE supposed to be part of the quizzes. They were almost entirely ignored and focus was instead placed on lectures. The time spent reading and summarizing the chapters was a large waste of time.»
- The book was not well suited to provide methods to our project due the project"s high technical level. »
- To some extent, but could have used it more. »
- Extremely little! Bying it was a waste of money since everything is covered in lecture slides or litterature from previous courses!»
- A rather large extent»
25. How has the interaction with your company and your industrial contact person worked out?- Very good.»
- really good»
- Rather well.»
- Very good!»
- Some telephonic meetings with the representative who sat in Stockholm. A more closer interaction would have been great. It is hard when the customer is so far away and cannot be visited physically.»
- It has been great. 10 out of 10»
- Really good, there was never any problem to get in touch with them.»
- good»
- Excellent! The project was at a larger company however so this most likely is why they could offer so much help! The contact person had also taken this very course only a few years ago so his involvement and understanding of our situation was excellent!»
- Very well at times and rather poorly at other times, perhaps due to the large size of the company.»
26. How has the interaction with your academic supervisor worked out?- Very good. »
- really good»
- Very nice.He was friendly and supportive.»
- Was ok, but i had quite low reliace on him. He was difficult to understand»
- Good and thorough feedback. But sometimes it seemed if he didn"t care at all about our project. It seemed like an annoying thing at the side. Guidance was only given after asking the right questions. Unasked input would have been nice sometimes, but was rarely received.»
- He was not that present during the end of the project but other than that the interaction was good. »
- Not really great, also the academic supervisor had difficulties understanding the project and should had engaged earlier in the project to help us get on the right track.»
- good»
- Very good!»
- Rather well»
27. To what extent have you reached the project goals you aimed at?- Full extend. »
- we have fulfilled our goal»
- I would say GOOD.»
- Good i think»
- The goals were fulfilled but with rather simple solutions. With a better team spirit and more motivation the solutions could have been more innovative.»
- All of them»
- We didn"t really reach them.»
- ok. »
- To a large extent! Somewhat bogged down by the fact that not everyone did their part in the project work!»
- We reached all of our stated goals, and surpassed some.»
28. Has your company got what they wanted?- Yes. »
- yes»
- Atleast we hope so.»
- Yes, they were very satisfied. 30 people came to listen to our presentation at their facilities and we got lunch and gifts as a thank you for a good job»
- To a big extent yes.»
- Yes. (It should be "Has your company gotten what they wanted?")»
- Yes»
- Yes, at least that"s what they told us.»
- yes»
- Yes, They seemed pleased with the result!»
- Very hard to tell, they seem pleased but have not explicitly stated so. At least they seem interested.»
29. To what extent are your personal expectations fulfilled?- Fully. »
- fulfilled»
- good»
- I got bad treated by a few of my group members. They almost made me quit the course. I am glad a few of them were really nice to me and pushed me through!»
- To a low extent. I would have expected more innovation processes in the development and much more commitment of my team members. Unfortunately they were happy with delivering the necessary. I regarded this as the core course of my Master Program and thus commited myself to a large extend.»
- My expectations were low and and were fulfilled to a certain degree.»
- Poorly, I really looked forward to work with an advanced product development project and I expected much more of the outcome of this project.»
- ok»
- To a large extent!»
- I would have expected a bit more committment from my team mates at this level of education (4th year)and perhaps even more integration with the industrial company. Other than that I am pleased with the results and the course.»
30. Any other comments about the project, its contents and the work process?- a great course! »
- Yes, the scoring for the 3 tests were differential. I say this because I felt the examiners marked strictly for an easy paper and were lenient on a difficult paper. It created a bit of imbalance to my scores.»
- The technical skills should be rewarded, too much patents, marketing, ecomony, customers. That is important, but dont forget the technology!!»
- Please take some influence on which students are assigned to which projects. There might be someone who is completely unsuited for the project as in our case. The first choice should be made by the students but the course organisators should have the final word when teaming up, by looking at the background of the peoople.»
- Nope»
- The "helper of the course" anwered email in a realy unpolite way and made a lot of wrongs during the course!»
- "Nuff said»
- I think one of the major hurdles in this course is that it is preceded by another course which involves the project, thus the project is started basically without supervision and guidance 3-4 months before the official project and team exercises, lectures etc. starts. This seemed to cause a lot of stir in many project teams.»
Lectures and reflection paper31. What do you think about the usefulness of having this kind of exercise linked to the project work?- Extra workload but useful. »
- good»
- They were relevant and improved our report writing skills. They also helped us to actually understand why we are doing instead of what we are doing»
- I liked the reflection report but difficult to follow and understand the lecture serie»
- It is usefule because it forces you to use the learned methods. On the other hand it is a strange feeling to begin a project always with the thought in your head that you will have to write about all the methods you used and thus need to keep track of them. That can be annoying sometimes. You don"t approach the problem very freely then.»
- Not that productive. This time could have been spent on the project.»
- It"s always good to test the knowledge gained in a course with an examination, although I don"t think this was executed properly. »
- ok»
- Did not really contribute a lot to learning but was ok I guess.»
- Very useful, if everyone is involved in it which was not the case. Its importance should be emphasized more clearly to all students.»
32. In what way do you feel that the selected subjects are interesting and useful both for you personally and for the project work?- Quite interesting. »
- They helped us to find out means of selection and reasoning.»
- Add engineers from industry to talk about pd»
- Very useful since they were used in the project. They also give an overview of what is done in the real world and how it works.»
- In no way at all.»
- They are part of the product development process, although it can be sometimes hard to follow with our own projects since the subjects are sometimes ahead of us.»
- ok.»
- Not very much at all actually! A lot of it has also been covered in previous courses!»
33. Do you think that it is reasonable that an MSc in Product Development should be familiar with different theoretical approaches within the field?- Yes. »
- yes»
- yes, definitely»
- Yes, good but remember all student have different backgrounds, different studies. Some repetition of kesselring etc»
- Absolutely. An academic must be familiar with as many approaches as possible.»
- Oh, absolutely.»
- Yes of course.»
- Yes»
- Yes, but practical experience is much more important!»
- Definitely»
34. Has the lectures and the assignment made it possible for you to gain this familiarity?- Yes. »
- yes»
- Yes, having read it once, then try it in the project and at last write that in the report provides 3 stage learning. »
- Project and studies did»
- To some extent yes.»
- Well, it has broadened the familiarity that I already had from the set of other projects I"ve been in.»
- Not so much, I have heard most of it before.»
- To some extent, but could have learned more. Maby my own fault though.»
- To some extent!»
- To some extent»
35. Had you preferred to get this familiarity in some other way –, if so, in what way?- No. »
- may be by introducing few more workshops like the one in the beginning of the course.»
- I would have wished more guidance in it and not just doing everything by myself and trying it out. I would have preferred to have our supervisor as a kind of mentor, who gives recommendations about what to do and how to use the methods.»
- Oh I don"t know, maybe integrate it with the Product Development Management course?»
- The teachers should have lessons regarding a real product development case running along the project so that the relevant part of the project is discussed when it"s appropriate in time.»
- Maby one could have chosen which theories to learn more about, and use them.»
- Yes,though more practical examples and exercises!»
- Perhaps the projects could have been pre chosen to fit some of the different approaches rather well»
36. Any other comments about the lectures and the assignment?- Could be more directive and lectures could include few real time examples of products which have happened in few years time. This would give a good way to compare and have a frame of find to innovate further.»
- Nope»
- Some where good and some really bad!»
- Just that the timing of the theory should have been available earlier. Perhaps this course could include the marjeting course as well and have all necessary information in the beginning?»
