Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course. They were also part of the course PM.

The learning outcomes of KBT090 are:

"After completion of this course, the student should be able to:

* Design common microbial cultivation techniques such as batch-, fed-batch and chemostat cultures,

* Make quantitative descriptions of growth and metabolic behaviour in various cell cultivation systems using mathematical modeling and simulation in Matlab,

* Design strategies for development of microbial cell factories suitable for industrial applications,

* Choose suitable cultivation techniques and cell systems for various manufacturing and research purposes and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various possibilities,

* Design metabolically based control strategies for cultivation of different cell systems such as bacteria, yeast, filamentous fungi and higher eukaryotes,

* Formulate and communicate a proposal for a biotechnological research or development project, including choice of model organism, cultivation techniques, and analytical techniques,

* Show awareness of important industrial applications of microbiology"

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

Please add constructive suggestions for how to improve the course.

- A very small detail: "Industrial Biotechnology" or "Bioreactors: design and control"? Both titles are currently used at different places. »
- It is too much to have a simulation assignment, a research proposal and an exam! One of these three should be removed. »
- It felt a bit too much with two Projects since I had a huge Project in the other course at the same time. Also, it was assumed that the students knew more about the basics within bioreactor technology because there was no introduction. It was just full speed ahead from the start.Some basics to refresh the memory would have been appreciated.»
- I don"t think you can have two project and an exam in this course because that is too much. One of the projects and an exam would have been enough. »
- Some of the sildes to the lectures could be improved and present information more clear, it also helps if the slides are handed out or available on the course homepage (this was the case for most lectures, but not all). The workload was a bit high with two large projects AND a written exam. It was also rather difficult to recieve help during the Matlab sessions, there needs to be two teachers every time in such a large group. »
- More computer exercises may be good»
- The grant proposal was very fun to work on, educational and challenging but there was a lot of confusion in the beginnig about what "a new area of research" entails without being allowed to ask questions about it. I thought it was odd that there was a last date for questions before the dead line. Why? I didn´,t need to ask any questions but it felt strange to not being allowed to, especially when the dead line was coming up. However, it was good to have some kind of limit as to what was allowed to ask about to make it a challange.»
- Schedule the Q.A later for the project proposal assignment and not on a holiday.»
- Maurizios slides, vet inte om han har koll på det men med så många rutor lagda ovanpå varandra är det omöjligt att få vettiga anteckningsslides när det man vill se och skriva kommentarer till täcks med en stor ruta. Annars är Maurizios slides väldigt pedagogiska så det är lite synd att det görs så svårt att anteckna.»
- Sometimes it seemed unclear what the different lectures was about. Some of the slides containing multiple animoations dont work well when printing out them to be able to study. Could be something too keep in consideration.»
- If possible it would be good to be able to get more help during MatLab sessions.»
- It would be good to have more opportunities to get help with the simulation project. It was very difficult but you learn alot but need more help with it.»
- Personally, I was a bit intimidated by the "you can"t ask questions"-part of the project. Maybe this could be introduced in another way... It felt like the matlab project was quite slow in the beginning and very stressful at the end. Maybe some weeks into the couse there could be more emphasising on what the student should have fulfilled so far so that the final report can be written carefully and not in the last minute. Otherwise I liked and learned a lot from both projects. »

16. Additional comments

- Overall, this course felt very similar to the Bioreaction engineering course so I do not think it should be a mandatory course.It would also be very helpful if you could find out your results from the simulation assignment and research proposal before the exam.»
- In general, the students do not have that much Matlab knowledge to do the simulation assignment and people had to ask for help very often because of that.»
- Ibland kändes föreläsningarna oförberedda, vilket innebar att fokus flyttades till att man fick koncentrera sig på om det skrevs rätt på tavlan.»
- Although it isn"t directly coupled to the course, it is very frustrating when the schedules clash as they did for Industrial Biotechnology and Food Biotechnology. This resulted in that I missed several matlab sessions and some lecture. It seems everyone blames each other for the schedule overlapping, but how hard can it be to schedule this correctly (given that you have chosen two courses from the "tracks" in the master program Biotechnology...)?»
- I want to improve my exam marks by preparing well and reappearing the exams»
- Some of the lectures were also heavily focused on research examples. Sometimes it were great but sometimes it was hard to understand why it was relative to the subject of the lecture.»
