Learning outcomes and examination

After completion of this course, the student should be able to:
Use the terminology and important concepts within the GIS work field. Describe the structures and properties of different GIS systems. Describe and explain data sources and different methods for retrieving, digitizing, control, storage, transfer and output/presentation of geographical data. Describe the content and accessibility of data in different geographical databases. Describe different data structures for storing of vector and raster data. Model and analyse data. Describe and examplify implications of the differences between the model and the real world. Explain the importance of data quality and be able to compute the errors from combinations of data with non-corelated errors. Describe and apply different techniques for interpolation and interpretation of data. Apply SQL in databases. Connect data attributes to geography. Describe the basics of MapInfo and ArcGIS be able to perform analyses in MapInfo and ArcView/ArcGIS. Describe different applications of GIS on engineering problems.

- To the projects it was good, But when it comes to the exam there were many things that was new and that I had to learn by looking on old exams. It should not be in that way.» (Some extent)

- Both MapInfo and ArcGis Werner rally slow and many operations in the program didn"t work. A large extent of the time therefore was spent on trying to solve the problems. These difficulties MUST be fixed to next year, otherwise the practical work is more a annoyance and not a god learning tool» (Small extent)

- The programs were to slow! I would never read course where the program is so slow again.» (Some extent)
- Good access to computers but the program worked badly and the computer labs were therefore very time consuming.» (Some extent)

- I think the content of the course is good but there should be more lectures to go through the material. Also, there was a large amount of time spent on MapInfo and ArcGIS but it had almost no value in the final module result. Because it is our understnading of how to use GIS which is being tested, shouldn"t it be a higher weighting?» (Adequate)
