- I think the home works were ment to be easier than how students felt about them. We do not have any prior courses in Matlab nor was the lab PM crystal clear.» (At least 35 hours/week)

- It was hard following the lectures and I am sorry but I have a hard time finding good constructive feedback regarding them. They got better in the end though.» (Some extent)

- Going through chapters in the free book "out of order" was confusing.» (Small extent)
- The BAR-book felt more like a reference than a book with nice-to-read intuitive explanations. Also jumping from chapter to chapter, which we did, was troublesome when terms/concepts from previous chapters were used (the book"s chapters are not as independent as the author may say). I would recommend that the teachers give reading instructions in a better book instead.» (Some extent)
- The recommended book is a bit overwhelming in some parts and others aren"t explained very clearly.» (Some extent)

9. How well did the course administration, web page, handouts etc work?

- Deadlines were too short and several times posted before the material in question had been covered. Deadlines were changed a lot which made it more confusing and frustrating. A home exam should be able to be handed in online (rather than in person), so a student could do it even if he is out of town.» (Very badly)
- You never knew when assignments were going to be posted. Give the students a schedule with dates when assignments will be posted and the deadlines, including the topic(s).» (Rather badly)
- Example is that we had to go to school to give the home exam. This was annonced after the exam released. This is realy bad as people could have gone far from time.» (Rather badly)
- When we wrote the exam there was 2 assignments that wasn"t graded yet and one that we haven"t handin yet... It would have been nice to know how many points I got on the assignments BEFORE the exam. » (Rather badly)

- Would be very well if home assignments was written more clearly. They were sometimes unnecessary hard to decode.» (Rather well)

- Homepage info was good, not too crowded. But the corrections of the homeworks, and the deadlines, all of those things take/took too much time which is bad for several reasons, at least two: (1) You lose valuable feedback of your work. (2) You are unable to plan ahead. These things are hopefully easy to fix until next time.» (Very well)

- The scheduling of the consulting time was horrendous. Some weeks it was more or less the day after the assignment was give, some weeks it was on the day before the hand-in. Besides the bad scheduling of consulting times, there should be more than one date available for each assignment.» (Very poor)
- In many other courses, the PhD-student gives "study sessions" where he/she goes through problems on the blackboard in a booked lecture hall. This would have been very appreciated if your time allows it. So basically one extra "class" every week consisting of this.» (Rather good)
- Everybody asked questions at the office hours so Vinay got a lot of work... It would have been better if there more than one person you could ask. For everyone.» (Rather good)
- Although a stressed helper, it worked very well thanks to the specified helping times.» (Very good)

- Maybe it is not bad idea to make the homework as a group work. I think that would make it easier for the student to understand and also lower the workload for them.» (Rather poorly)
- Cooperation was not a main point in the course, but the discussions we had were fine (for homeworks that is).» (Rather well)

- The homeworks need to be more thought out. Often the datasets were not so interesting and the same is true for the solutions.» (Low)
- Especially for me with some of the complicated math.» (High)

- The course content structure felt ad-hoc. The homeworks were sometimes almost not even connected to the lectures. There are too many delays. These are the things I"d wish you focused on till next year.» (Poor)
- The organisation was too confusing and the exercises could be better matched with the rest of the course material. » (Poor)

- A good, interesting course. However. The administration didn"t work at all.» (Good)

15. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- Be more clear in the descriptions of the homeworks! And when and where to report the exam, this sould be in the exam thesis.»

16. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Better information. Faster grading of the assignments. If something was wrong in an assignment. Enlighten us with what was wrong, instead of saying "There"s an error in task 2". We are here to learn after all. Since there is no re-submissions it would be good to know what was wrong so it"s possible to avoid doing the same error in future hand-in"s. There"s another reason to why faster grading of assignments would be good. Even if the assignments don"t build on each other, some content in them are similar and it would be good to know if you were correct in the last hand-in.»
- The homeworks deadlines sould be in the right part of the week this sould be timed so the students dont have to sit on the weekends.»

- Concepts should be thoroughly explained in a clear and consistent manner. Deadlines should not be so short (rather overlap instead). Exercises should be less ambiguous. Exercises should touch basic concepts more thoroughly (rather than touching advanced unrelated topics briefly and fleetingly, which makes students do tedious tasks without understanding them).»
- Some of the assignments could be made more interesting. A bit more of planification and better organisation when it comes to correcting homeworks.»
- Devdatt should do all the lectures,I think exercise sessions would be beneficial and the feedback from the assignments should be quicker. It"s hard to start an assignment that uses some older code if you don"t know if that code is correct.»
- The last third of the course become much more demanding than the two first thirds and it was very hard to understand the advanced topics (MCMC, Topic Modeling,...). I think it would be good to shorten the introduction/basic part a bit and spend more time on them.»

- How very noble of you exposing a students less well structured email on the course webpage instead of trying to help the student.»
- This course is hard...»
- The course is incredibly hard and even though only ELEMENTARY statistics, mathematical analysis, and linear algebra is required, it feels like a high grade in all those courses and perfect recollection is needed.»
- The prerequisites are "elementary linear algebra and probability". However, in the course many times some (sometimes hard) mathematical concepts are introduced very hastily with insufficient explanation.»
