- Attending lectures has been really useful since all contents were clearly presented and I found Niklas Broberg very good at explaining and organising the presentation/introduction of ideas and concepts, his receptiveness to questions creates a very comfortable environment. Also, encouraging students to participate by posing questions adds dynamics and helps paying attention all throughout lectures (makes them more interesting and keeps the student thinking actively instead of passively). The extensive use of examples is also very helpful.» (Great extent)

- Exercise sessions, interaction during lectures (i.e.: quizzes, etc - stretching exercises included -), the theoretical parts of the syllabus (gives clear definitions of concepts and helps in applying them), lab pace and deadlines (really useful to make sure one is working adequately towards the full programming assignment). And Niklas Broberg"s teaching style. Must add that Jonas Almström Duregård was also an excellent teaching assistant: both during lab sessions and tutorial exercise sessions (both in explaining and answering questions, as well as posing new ones for one to think about).»

- Most of the things, but I could point to something so specific as the "coming late" rule. Worked great and made for better lectures. Niklas is a passionated teacher and I hope he get"s to give this course in the future as well.»

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- It will be nice if the course consider those who have no experience in database management in there previous BSC program»
- The labs should train BCNF/3NF/4NF better! And one of the guys at the excersizes were very bad... Gregoiare or whatever his name was!»
- Lite för mycket pill med sql, man lär sig inte så mycket på att skriva tusen insertions. hade varit lättare om vi fått datan istället.»
- When we are told to try to demonstrate the application in task 5 as early as possible, it is not ok for all of the supervisors to come 15 minutes late the thursday (the week we needed to demonstrate and submit the code)! You should also check some differences in the workload of different tasks, e.g. task 2 requires about no time at all while task 3 requires a lot of time. Maybe the thinking of test data for different test cases should belong to task 2 while populating the database with the test data belong to task 3 (both things should not belong to task 3 as task 3 becomes too time consuming). You should be better at uploading the tutorial exercises at least one day before the tutorial sessions. You also need to talk more to each other so that everyone is corrected (on the labs) in the same way, I passed when others, that used almost the same way of thinking, didn"t (e.g. not throwing errors in the triggers). You need to be consistent regarding those things.»

- The fact that if all who was registered to the course where to attended we would not have been allowed to all be in the lecture room considering fire safety. Was not an issue since not all where there on the same time, but still something to think about.»

- A very good ant well structured course that was fun and had rellevant content»
- Jonas held very good tutorial sessions where one wanted to interact with him and also made us all understand what was going on. Other tutorial sessions were worse due to the teaching style of the different supervisors, they should learn from Niklas (course responsible) and Jonas.»
- The course has been really enjoyable. However, databases are a very large topic and it would be great to have a follow-up course to cover ideas presented towards the end of the course (namely: NoSQL / non-relational databases) since it seems hard to fit more contents into the current Databases course. It would help in order to have a broader view of databases and would also give better insight to current development in the field. For example, the MapReduce paradigm (which can yield interesting exercises and issues, plus setting up a Hadoop framework to implement algorithms in it is easy) or graph databases (a very interesting and useful way of representing data) introduce new ways of manipulating data which would add a stronger algorithmic component to the course and have open source implementations, so they could be suitably incorporated into such a course.»
