Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

The thematic of the design studio is planning and design for sustainable development in a small or medium sized municipality in Sweden. The aim of the studio is:

- to increase knowledge and understanding of the planning and development problems as well as possibilities of small and medium sized municipalities/communities/towns in the perspective of sustainable development.

- to train the ability to describe, analyse and interpret a local situation in a broad perspective, including spatial and architectural characteristics as well as environmental, social and economic aspects.

- to, with a point of departure in an understanding of place, in a local as well as in a broader context, work out and try visionary principles of planning and design of spatial structures and the built environment, in support of a sustainable development.

Learning objectives/goals
- Be able to describe and discuss different perspectives on planning and design for sustainable development in small and medium sized municipalities/towns

- Be able to describe and discuss different approaches to sustainable urban development

- Be able to use analytical methods and tools for the inventory and analysis of a local situation, especially concerning urban structures and the built environment

- Be able to design and assess strategies and concrete proposals for local sustainable development

- Be able to combine knowledge from different disciplines and sectors in proposals for actions and measures in design for sustainable development and combine scientific and artistic approaches in the design process

- Be able to motivate different proposals with reference to scientific, or experience-based, knowledge and value-based arguments

- Be able to visualise and communicate different proposals for clients, stakeholders and experts in different stages of the design process

- Be able to critically search for information and assess the quality of different sources of information

- The first 4 weeks could be cut down to two. After that all new groups said the same things over and over. It was very stressfull working like we had to back then.» (Passed)

- To low tempo in relation to the preceding assignment. Some quick workshops instead of pig safari might have changed my mind...» (Bad)
- Temaveckan var väldigt intressant, men den var inte så anpassad för de engelskspråkiga studenterna (filmen vi tittade på som Pål Castell visade). Det var också dålig information om hur det var tänkt med mat (om man skulle bli tvungen att köpa mat eller om det var möjligt att ta med matlåda på de olika dagarna). Det var också två föreläsningar som hade väldigt lika innehåll (minns inte vilka det var, men det var två gästföreläsningar). » (Passed)
- It was fun but next to useless for the final design project in most, if not all students cases.» (Passed)

- For me personally it was difficult to handle the freedom during six weeks, and sometimes I felt like I was not doing anything meaningful. Our group consisted of very different people and that was both an opportunity for learning and a difficult challenge. » (Good)
- Too little time! But otherwise the best part of this entire course. To work on our ideas and then meet up for consultation with skilled professionals and our tutors. Fantastic, but as I said too short. This resulted in working over-hours each day.» (Good)

- Good lecturers. Could have wished for more lectures on more explicit "sustainable cities". For instance the cities in China coming up, or similar. Successful transformations would also be nice to get someone with knowledge to talk about. The theme is planning, but as a process/outcome, it feels more like "ideas" for a sustainable Mariestad.» (Great extent)

- Jag tycker att litteraturseminarier är väldigt bra och intressant, men i den här kursen där det är ganska mycket att göra, är det inte riktigt lika prioriterat att läsa in sig och det kändes som ett störande moment när det var annat som skulle färdigställas. Dock ett trevligt tillfälle att träffas och diskutera.» (Passed)

- We where three people in my group and it worked very well with one of them and rather poorly with the other.» (Rather well)
- A lot of teamwork, especially in part A with a lot of different groups during the weeks. Nice way to really be aware of your own and different roles in groups. No bigger issues in the groups.» (Rather well)

- Maybe be harder when dividing the tasks before the final exhibition. The translation and proof reading is hard work, and all swedish students should help doing this - while other students should take care of the rest.» (High)

- It was too high because we had to focus on things (reading litterature and preparing seminars) which we immediately at the time felt were diverging from our goals of what we wanted to archieve with this project. Costed time which we rather would have spent on the Design Phase where the concrete investigations needed for the project were being made.» (Too high)

- The presentation in Mariestad (or Tidaholm next year) - really fun and intresting to hear what the politicians and inhabitants think of the projects. The general repitition before the final presentation was also really helpful! The parties is nice and brings the group together. »

- 1. tutors that have prior knowledge of our site so they can actually be helpful. Krystal was the worst tutor I have had in my entire academic life 2. The broader context was not useful and that time would have been better spent on design 3. The expected level of work was too low. This course seems to be at the level of first year bachelors for me. 4. More time with tutors and maybe some more lectures would have been more helpful than seminars or book reviews »
- A new approach to the urban farming week.»
- Maybe to try to get more difference between the projects? Many delt, finally, with sort of the same things. Encourage and suggest new subjects maybe? A lot a focus was put on water, I think, because of the (good) workshop with REposition. Be aware of the power such a workshop will have. »

- The course is demanding but in a very friendly environment. When we made the last presentation at Mariestad it was wonderful to see how we had all grown. I felt that the first part of the course was hard but in the end I really felt it was worth going through it!»
- This course for me was run by lovely staff and they did a great job at organizing and facilitating the course. There was just no teaching involved and I feel like I learnt nothing but presentation techniques in the 12 weeks we had there. »
