Genomsnitt: 2.64 - Some of words used in the description are unknown if you are not familiar with the field. But since you finish with the course everything is crystal clear» (The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn)
- I do recall seeing the goals, but who really remembers them anyway?» (I have not seen/read the goals)
5. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.30 svarande
No, the goals are set too low» | | 0 | | 0% |
Yes, the goals seem reasonable» | | 28 | | 93% |
No, the goals are set too high» | | 2 | | 6% |
Genomsnitt: 2.06 - Whatever they are, I"m sure they"re reasonable.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- The problem was assignment 3 where to much focus was on the competition and very little on guidance and teaching which in the end led to poor quality.» (No, the goals are set too high)
6. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?34 svarande
No, not at all» | | 2 | | 6% |
To some extent» | | 15 | | 50% |
Yes, definitely» | | 13 | | 43% |
I don"t know/have not been examined yet» | | 4
Genomsnitt: 2.36 - Too much of the typical learning-by-heart questions.» (To some extent)
- I think written "classroom"-type exams are quite pointless, to be honest. They mostly test my memory (which is, I admit, weakened by googling everything I can"t remember), not my skills. The group assignment and individual assignments were much more giving. Fact: you can test people"s knowledge by asking them to do stuff in practice. The facts I babbled up on the written exam will probably be forgotten soon. So how about replacing the written exam with individual assignments?» (To some extent)
- I think a larger project would have been a better examination for this course because the most important goal of this course is how we apply the concepts. As least, more credit could be given to the project because the way it is now it doesn"t actually matter for the final grade.» (To some extent)
- I would have love to see some sort of task involving writing requirements (even if there was one about P-Language). » (To some extent)
- Exam tested correct things, hand-ins had so poor feedback that it is impossible to assess.» (To some extent)
- Much better exam than previous years. But, put a page limit next time and state more clearly what you expect in terms of quantity. Correcting this exam will probably be a pain since most people wrote around 12 pages.» (Yes, definitely)
- Yes, written exam + assignments » (Yes, definitely)
Teaching and course administration7. To what extent has the teaching been of help for your learning?36 svarande

Large extent» | | 15 | | 41% |
Great extent» | | 8 | | 22% |
Genomsnitt: 2.83 - The quality of the theoretical part varied» (Some extent)
- I missed a lot of the teaching, but I have a solid background in these areas that made this reasonable.» (Some extent)
- Good job by Mr Feldt! He"s a really solid lecturer.» (Great extent)
- The lectures combined with the workshops were great. I would have liked to have more lectures held by Emil Alégroth, he is great.» (Great extent)
8. To what extent has the course literature and other material been of help for your learning?36 svarande
Small extent» | | 2 | | 5% |
Some extent» | | 9 | | 25% |
Large extent» | | 13 | | 36% |
Great extent» | | 12 | | 33% |
Genomsnitt: 2.97 - I wouldn"t recommend buying the book to anyone, going to all lectures is enough for this course.» (Some extent)
- Gave few additional information then the one explained in the lecture. However, it was helpful in fixing the knowledge gained from the lectures.» (Some extent)
- Good book, good papers, good slides. Nice work!» (Large extent)
- Very good slides.» (Great extent)
9. How well did the course administration, web page, handouts etc work?36 svarande
Very badly» | | 1 | | 2% |
Rather badly» | | 3 | | 8% |
Rather well» | | 16 | | 44% |
Very well» | | 16 | | 44% |
Genomsnitt: 3.3 - Feedback from first and second assignment was very poor. I only received one sentence of feedback that said I need to read more about two quality attributes. The feedback also came too late, but that I guess you are already aware about.» (Very badly)
- You are probably already aware of this, but the delay in grading assignment 1 and 2 was borderline unacceptable. I was halfway trough assignment 3 before I failed assignment 1, and had I not been in a otherwise good group this might have gone badly.» (Rather badly)
- But you guys are already aware of this. Please give out the volere template early next year, so the students will have a good time to read it trough before the group assignment begins.» (Rather badly)
- Late & poor feedback (I got 3 HIGHLY generic and utterly useless statements re: my 2 first submissions which did not helpe at all) & material released late - the volere SRS should really have been released immediately so that we could begin familiarizing ourselves with its contents early on.
Beyond the assignment bits, though, the course worked really well. Good handouts, good webpage, twitter was a bit of a surprise but really worked well. Keep it up, but get a god damn handle on the assignments for future iterations, please. » (Rather badly)
- Best course web-page ever. Good with twitter feeds» (Rather well)
- Very good course web page.» (Rather well)
- The course page is really nice and they did a great job with everything else too. I have only 2 negative points:
No exams from last year were given. I don"t think that"s fair. The course responsive tweeted this: "I"m against exam-focus in students. Followed along => have knowledge => can perform. Much like life. ,)". Well then, why is there a written exam? Having to write a test using pen and paper is far from being life-like. If you"re against exam-focus, then the students" knowledge should be tested with practical assignments. And if you"re going to have a written exam, then giving out the template from last year is only fair towards students.
The 2nd thing is that the SRS assignment was a bit unclear when it comes to limits. The limit was 60 pages, but, about 3 hours before the deadline, Emil dropped by and said that it was 60 pages using a size 14 font. One group (not us! ,)) had to cut a lot of their text because they had written 60 pages using size 11 fonts. Size 11 is, incidentally, the most common font size used in written reports. So please, make it more clear the next year.
Everything else was top-notch.» (Rather well)
- He only had problems with receiving the feedback for the first and second assignment.» (Rather well)
- Got feedback on the first assignment after third assignment had already started.
In general, the third assignment should start earlier to avoid that learning for the exam overlaps with work on the third assignment.» (Rather well)
Study climate10. How were the opportunities for asking questions and getting help?36 svarande

Rather good» | | 10 | | 29% |

I did not seek help» | | 2 | | |
Genomsnitt: 3.35 - Late and poor feedback on assigment 1 and 2, ambigius answers from techers aid» (Very poor)
- Emil made it very clear to the students that he did not want to receive "stupid" questions. He said that this is the masters now and you should find out your answers in the course litterature. This, according to me, seems very weird and it comes with the risk of people not wanting to ask questions because they are afraid of being concidered as "stupid". I mean just because we have read the course litterature does not mean that we understand it. Isnt that the reason why we have you teachers? To ask questions about things we dont understand. Who are we supposed to ask if we dont understand something in the litterature?» (Very poor)
- Usually the answer was that this is part of a competition and we can"t answer you.» (Rather poor)
- More help sessions would have been useful, but I"ll call this a 50% situation sliiiiightly leaning to the poor side.» (Rather poor)
- Different people got conflicting information.» (Rather poor)
- They set up an email account for the course, and answered rather quickly and good. Especially Robert and Pariya.» (Rather good)
- The course mail and twitter provided good opportunities.» (Rather good)
- Emil was a great help. A funny guy too, that"s a big plus. Kudos for being both professional, interesting and committed.» (Very good)
- I believe it"s better to talk to the teacher when you have something unclear rather than sending emails. One understands better this way.» (Very good)
- Good with the twitter account. And fast (mostly) answer on email. » (Very good)
- Very fast response to emails» (Very good)
11. How well has cooperation between you and your fellow students worked?36 svarande

I did not seek cooperation» | | 0
Genomsnitt: 3.08 - The level of peoples" English knowledge is in many cases too low. This creates a lot of frustration and extra work during the work with the SRS project. » (Rather poorly)
- One person in our group was kind of unpleasant. That person questioned other people"s competence and laughed at their ideas in a kind of malicious way. That was the first time I ever met with such behavior at a university. I can only hope that I will never have to work with that person again.
Also, some people were not really committed to the assignment. As a result, the assignment didn"t really turn out very well. Nothing to be done there, but I think you probably should let people pick their groups. I know that it is not really the way it is in life, but, on the other hand, in real-life jobs, bad bananas would be ousted, while in a little school project, you just let it go, because you probably won"t have to work with them again anyway, and you don"t want to destroy the little unity the group has.
So I think the assignments that weigh most in grading should be individual or done in selectable teams.
Also, some people have very limited English skills. I know I"m not Shakespeare myself, but I"m pretty sure that I was better at sentence construction and vocabulary than some of my fellow students before I even started high school. I did extensive corrective work on our assignment. I could have put that effort into the assignment itself, but then the language would"ve been abysmally bad. I heard that some people in our class didn"t understand spoken English. At all.
So I"m wondering whether you examine people"s English skills in any way? Please do, because if you don"t, you make it really difficult for us to have any meaningful cooperation.» (Rather poorly)
- People are getting accepted to english language master programs with little or no english skills. Complete disaster.» (Rather poorly)
- There were problems with the group assignment.» (Rather poorly)
- We had just one problem: gathering all (we were 5 for the project) to work for the project» (Rather well)
- I like the idea of you guys putting together the teams.» (Very well)
12. How was the course workload?35 svarande

High» | | 18 | | 51% |
Too high» | | 3 | | 8% |
Genomsnitt: 3.68 - The workload was uneven and it was unnecessary. We sat waiting for the feedback from our first assignment for weeks, and then we started this (massive) project with just weeks left of the course. The project should have started on day one.» (Adequate)
- It was just fine.» (Adequate)
- Low on the first part, but helpful because I had Project Management which occupied all of my time. However, we had a lot of workload on the second part with the project. » (Adequate)
- As it should be.» (High)
- Adequate at the beginning but very high at the end with the last assignment. » (High)
- Most of it was OK, but the deadline on assignment 3 was not realistic. We struggled to meet the amended deadline, let alone the first one.» (High)
- During the third assignment the workload was too high. Otherwise was the workload adequate.» (High)
- The second half of the course had a very high workload. The teachers argument for the high workload was "it is the masters now, just suck it up and get used to it". I fail to see the point here, where exactly is it stated that master students have to work more then regular students? I do agree with that the information we learn is more advanced but that does not mean that we need to have a high workload. A recommendation would be to start sooner with the third assignment because the first weeks were not so time consuming and the 1 and 2 assignment dont take that much time to do. That way the second half would not be so though.» (High)
- Workload was high, but not too high. However, this was coupled with another very high workload course - TDA365 - which made the last three weeks of the period utterly horrible.
» (High)
- It was too high due to the group assignments. Half of the team did only very few things, adding a lot of work and pressure to the others» (Too high)
- Not really. But, I think the group assignment should"ve started one week earlier.» (Too high)
13. How was the total workload this study period?36 svarande

High» | | 12 | | 33% |
Too high» | | 18 | | 50% |
Genomsnitt: 4.33 - Sometimes I barely had time to study, because I also work 20 hours/week.» (High)
- Studied 7 days a week for 7 weeks. And that goes or most of the MPSOF class. We are pretty exhausted now, and it sort of kills our interest in the courses. You end up just doing things to get it done. Unnecessary and probably not what any of course responsible had in mind.» (Too high)
- Too high, because of the other course, Project Management.» (Too high)
- Very much to do in the other course, TEK365. » (Too high)
- The course that ran in parallel was Project Management which could easily be a 15 hp course. But the teacher there did not care about that so I guess we wont see a change there. I want to state again that the motto of "this is the masters, get used to a high workload" is so unclear. Why should we work more for our high school credits? Shouldnt the motto be "this is the masters, get used to learn more advanced things"? » (Too high)
- The course workload was high, but not too high. The period workload I did indeed perceive as "too high" given that I was taking TEK365 Project Management (as was all SE students) - on it"s own, it"s a high-workload but doable course, coupled with another high-workload course it starts to border on the unreasonable. Given that a large number of students will be working on both these courses, it might be a pretty good idea to release the materials, and allow work on, the SRS portion of the course earlier than is done now.
The overall workload of this course was OK, but the majority of students are going to have a horrible time due to the coupling with TEK365 - try to fix this somehow (see below for suggestions).» (Too high)
Summarizing questions14. What is your general impression of the course?36 svarande

Genomsnitt: 3.8 (bidrar till totalt genomsnitt/jämförelseindex) - I actually don"t think that a course like this is necessary. In my opinion you could squeeze important parts of this course in to another course and it would be enough. Requirements Engineering in MY opinion is not that big of a subject, there are definately more important parts of software engineering to have a course in, or maybe put in a elective course instead. Please don"t misunderstand me, I think the subject is really important. But it is not big enough to have in it"s own course I think.
Hope I don"t hurt any feelings, but I don"t think I will since I"m just an inexperienced student.» (Poor)
- The information of the third assignment could have been much better. Many groups missunderstood that the SRS were supposed to be for the Developers only. This was made clear too late which resulted in that all requirements needed to be re-made so the CEO could understand them aswell. Also, since many questions were concidered "stupid", the help you could get was poor.» (Fair)
- Hand-ins had huge workload compared to what you learned doing them.» (Fair)
- It feels like that this course could be learned during a shorter period of time. The content of the course could, for example, be combined in another course. » (Adequate)
- It is an interesting subject. But it got killed by badly planned (and conducted) practical part of the course.» (Adequate)
- Good enough - learnt a lot, but had a far more horrible time than I should have. » (Adequate)
- The course was great, would"ve been excellent without the written exam and without some people in my group (it may sound rough, but that"s my general impression).» (Good)
- It can be improved by doing a bigger project. I would have loved that, although I worked this period more than 12 hours a day most of the days and I had no weekends.» (Good)
- The course content was very good and educational, but the administration worked mostly badly.» (Good)
- Really interesting and good course. » (Excellent)
- The professor and his assistants did a great job! I have really enjoyed the lectures and workshops!» (Excellent)
- I really enjoyed the course. I was coming to the lectures because I liked them a lot the way they were given.» (Excellent)
- Very up-to-date and interesting.» (Excellent)
15. What should definitely be preserved to next year?- Robert Feldt»
- This exam was good »
- Course page. Robert. Pariya. Guest lectures.»
- * The first two assignments
* The teacher (examiner)
* The course assistants»
- project, practice-oriented learning»
- The course people were great. Also, the first assignment was giving.»
- The help for the assignments, as well as the first assignment»
- The Teachers. Assignment 1 and 2 but faster feedback! »
- Group Assignment»
- The group project. It helps not just understanding the theoretical concepts but also apply them practically which gives a lot more insight.»
- Video recordings of the lectures was really nice! »
- Course Twitter, The Assignments»
- The customer interview played by the professor and the assistant was both funny and I learnd a lot. So, please keep this.
You determined the groups for the third assignment. At the beginning it was very though. But looking back now I think that this was a very good idea. I learned to work with people that were strange to me in the beginning and were from different cultural backgrounds as well. »
- Video recording for each lecture.»
- Paryah was a really good tutor, would have been very interesting to have her do some of the lectures.
I liked the guest lecturers.
Course administration was quite good, liked the schedule and the twitter account.»
- Case works »
- All course material are good and can be used in next year.»
- Not a huge first assignment were we get feed back after 5 weeks. The feedback was also really bad. It did not help me understand what I had done wrong and I could improve my work. »
- The video slides, individual assignment, web page»
- The way of the lectures are performed. The good vibes and the humor of the professor and his associates in the class. »
- All of the teaching material.»
- Group assignments»
- The mandatory guest lecture, it was very interesting!»
- Course web page, instant info feedback through news section»
- The guest lecture was interesting, as well as many of the lectures where example was included.»
- Labs and group and individual assignments , »
- Keep recording lectures.»
- The course itself is good, preserve most of it, just make some changes to the third assignment, perhaps releasing it a week early -- and make sure that you give out proper feedback on the first two assignements. It was very frustrating getting really poor feedback really late, as the feedback could then not be used to inform the third assignment. »
- similar lectures»
16. What should definitely be changed to next year?- Beter feedback on hand-ins and assignments»
- The project didn"t feel that good. Could be solved differently.»
- Start with assigment 3 earlier»
- The practical part, scrap it and start over. »
- * The group assignment is too big and it starts too late, or at least it finishes too late. No time to study for the exam. Many parts of the group assignment (of the template) are also irrelevant in my opinion, and they just take time to finish.»
- please give an better overview of the whole area. For example clearer links between Elicitation, Analysis, Validation. What comes after what?»
- Remove the home exam, replace it by some individual practical assignment, or give out last year"s exam. Also, allow people to choose their groups. The 2nd assignment was kind of pointless in my opinion. The Volere template is very vague on some points, maybe you should prepare your own template with answers to frequently asked questions?»
- The project should be made bigger, should start a lot earlier and it should have a percentage in the final grade. The second assignment should be removed. I haven"t learned anything new from that assignment except the fact that some people taking this master can have a really bad English (I wasn"t expecting that)»
- Assignment three: It is a really good assignment but I would have prefered (since it was late start and so on) that teachers explained more about writing requirments as a pitch. And present a old SRS from when they did not use Volere didn"t really help much.. A example from the last year would have been better. »
- The start time of the course, if 10 is better»
- Feedback of individual assignments should come earlier.
It"s not necessary to give feedback on good stuff just give comments which requirements are bad and why and what should be improved. Even though there was a lot to read when grading the assignments this would have helped me not just to understand what i am doing wrong but where and why i did so...»
- Academic results in the subject is interesting. But going through every content of a table is not! Too much focus on this in the end of the course.»
- The grading speed of the assignments. The deadline of assignment 3.»
- If possible move the start of the third assignment towards the beginning of the study period to avoid that learning for the exam overlaps with work on the third assignment.
The first assignment could be kept shorter because in the third assignment functional requirments have to be written as well.
I was disappointed of the guest lecture because I expected more infomration about requirements engineering in practice. »
- Quicker feedback for each assignment.»
- There were huge differences in the quality of the tutors. Paryah gave exemplary feedback, I really learned a lot just by reading the feedback that other people had gotten from her. Amir, on the other hand gave incomplete, ambiguous and vague feedback. I did not learn anything from his feedback. This made me very frustrated.
Another thing, perhaps the most important, is the lack of respect that I felt from Emil and in some of the documents. Emil would use terms like "retards" and would call things "stupid" and would roll his eyes when students asked things that he didn"t appreciate. I guess he was doing some of this unconsciously, and some of it to create what he thought was a "fun" atmosphere. It didn"t work.
The biggest lack of respect was exposed in the assigment 3-document. That last few paragraphs about "welcome to sweden, here we do things [blablabla]" is completely atrocious. It is borderline racist, completely devoid of respect and I never want to read stuff like that ever again in a Chalmers assignment. Shame on the authors of that.»
- The work overload »
- The group assignment load is High plus to enhance the procedure of selecting group members.»
- Smaller weekly assignments with good and precise feedback.»
- The number of students in a group project is too large. Maybe the size of the report should be reduce, so it could be handle by just 2 group members. »
- The feedback for the assignments was always late. As a result you had to move on the next step based on the feedback that you never had.
The workload for the group assignments is not equally splitted. There were groups with 5 and groups with 4 people. As are result the latter had to do more. If there are also problems with the group mates then 2 or 3 people have to do the work for 5.»
- Group assignment should begin earlier.»
- Nothing»
- It would be good to add mandatory group contracts to make shure everyone contributes in their group.»
- Skip the competition and emphasis collaboration which in the will give higher quality.»
- Assignment 3 may be started earlier. Since Software Engineering students will most likely have Project Management course in parallel (which has a very high workload), it might might help to have a little more time.
Feedback for the first and second assignments were given by two teachers and they differed considerably: one was a lot more detailed. I don"t think that"s fair, so maybe you could have some kind of the template for feedback.»
- The third assignment should be presented earlier and the students should be given the chance to study the Volere template in advance. Now the template was released as the students" were hip-deep in assignments in other courses, and things were generally poor.»
- Change/remove hand-ins, especially feedback was poor»
17. Additional comments- Explain more about busniessusecases and how to derive requirments from them»
- They really need to redo the whole practical part of this course. As it is now, it kills the course completely.
Proposal:
Start with the project on day one. Then, plan the theoretical part so that it matches how a real life RE project (and their project) would be conducted. That would make the project and course more realistic and could possibly help people understanding each part better.
When handing out assignments, think quality instead of quantity (!). Give out smaller exercises and use workshops to discuss the assignments. That way it gets easier for both parties. The students needs, and wants, feedback from you.
Use us as TAs if you need more TAs for workshops etc (!).»
- Keep up the good work!»
- N/A»
- The course content was excellent and i personally recommend the course »
- I really liked the course and I learnt a lot. I hope you will continue like this the next years as well.»
- A general problem so far on the master programme of Software Engineering has been the group works. Since the programme has so many group works, there should definetly be some better way to handle this because there have been so many problems. I have had 4 different group works with different groups so far and in _every_ group one or more students have failed to take responsibility, show up on time, show up at all which have resulted in a high workload for the other members of the group and a very bad working environment since people will get irritated and so on. What you should have is some introductory lesson(s) in how a group assigment works. In those lessons you should state to the students what is expected of them in a group. For example, take responsibility for the work, show up on time, if you are sick contact your members of the group, contribute with work, do not expect anyone else to do the work for you etc. These things might seem clear to many but they are NOT clear to many at this master programme and something needs to be done about it. Also the lesson(s) could describe how you organize your group work and talk about setting up group contracts. As for now, the students that recognize these problems are left out to solve the issues on their own. I have done this so far but I do not know how much longer I can take it because it is taking so much time. I think that Software Engineering is a very interesting subject and I have been looking forward to starting this masters programme for a long time but I am seriously considering if really I have made the right choice. This is a very critical issue and needs to be taken care of, otherwise innocent students will suffer even more. I am very interested in how yoy look at this, please contact me at grunden.johan@gmail.com and explain to me what is going to be done to solve this matter.»
- The course organizers should have a deep and serious thinking session regarding whether releasing the third assigment & the Volere Template only when work is to commence is useful and reasonable. If there are no measurable significant gains to releasing it late, you should really release the template in the first week and tell students "Later in this course you have to make a SRS based on this template, study it well or disaster will befall you". I personally can not see any reasons not to release the template early, please think this through really, really carefully - it was bloody hell working with the SRS and the last bits of the Project Management cases at the same time. Please, please, please, PLEASE think this through. »
