- Difficult to exam this subject in four hours since the calculations are so long. Therefore I think the exam was a good as can be hoped for, nevertheless it was not a very difficult exam.» (To some extent)
- Although knowledge of terminology as orthotropy and transversal isotropy etc was not tested (and many students was confused about the terminology). The students knowledge about manufacturing of composites did not meet the goal in general I think. » (To some extent)

- Yes, but it is was quite surprising with a FEM calculation question on the exam since we only had one lecture and no tutorial concerning this. Seems like the Applied Mechanics students would have a clear advantage in this question compared to the Naval Architecture students since they studied FEM in this lecture period. » (Yes, definitely)

- Very good, but some times the content has been to hard to actually understand. This understanding has on the other hand been taken care of during the tutorials and the assignments.» (Rather good )

- I would like to state the tutorial sessions as "OK". More focus should be on the theory and solution pattern. When referring to an equation - also tell a little about from where it is derived and what the equation means and also what the different variables means. Erik did not focus much on the calculations, which was good.» (Rather good )

- It was a challenging exam that tested our knowledge and understanding. However as mentioned before it was quite surprising with a FEM question. Other than that it was a fair exam.» (Good)
- I liked it a lot. How ever for the exam it self I prefer the usual mechanics courses arrangement with 5 questions á 5 points. off-course this would have to be combined with the assignment points to equal 50/50 distribution. But 3 questions seemed a little to few. Sometimes it"s harder with fewer questions since it could lead to that you need to be very good at that specific part off the course. (I don"t really think that was the case here, but it could be a problem) It also seems like the idea about having only 3 questions on the exam was a bit forced since both question 2 and 3 had sub-tasks which were not very related.» (Good)

- The assignments feel well planned from the lecturer. They have a good mixture when it comes to difficulties and the content gives a good understanding. As a student I was motivated and gained larger interest to the course through the assignments. The class has spent much time on the assignments, and less time on the exercises, at least until the exam preparations. I think that the timing of the last assignment could be less close to the exam, a week earlier perhaps, in order to not take away attention from the final preparations. I think the final outcome would be better by doing this. » (Adequate)

- The ansys part was rather enjoyable, wish I could say the same about the matlab part. Difficulty understanding the theory behind the finite elements method coupled with the difficulty using matlab mad it more or less a nightmare. » (High)

- In my experience programming some FE plate does not help the understanding for the theory.» (Some extent)
- Matlab part was a bit tricky due to the given FE-code which was in some places slightly confusing. But since the FE-formulations are more like a toolbox which is used in this course it was manageable.» (Large extent)

- But difficult to change this, there is no point in simply making the calculations harder because that doesn"t test the composite knowledge but how well we did in earlier math courses. Mayd allow the book and not the lecturenotes since they are such a good summary => makes it to easy to look up stuff at the exam => makes us less likely to study as much as we maybe should.» (Low)

- It really showed that this was the first time the course was held.» (Fair)
- Maybe a bit more on the analysis of arbitrary shapes like the blade. I guess it´,s not very common to just have a square plate in the industry. » (Good)

- These course is so far one of the best courses I have had on Chalmers. Both the teachers, Martin and Eric, seem really enthusiastic and interested in the students learning outcome. - I think the FEM part was a waste of time. Kirchhoff and Mindlin theory is discussed in detail in FEM structure. The time could be used for a different topic, eg. short fibre reinforcemtent.»

28. Additional comments

- Lecture of manufacturing of composites was a bit boring and the learning outcome is not really visible to me. I think it is important to know how composites are generally produced. But since this is not a production engineering course it is tediously to go through all possible manufacturing technologies. Especially when it is done only superficially. Im my mind, it would be better to present the manufacturing technologies in general, differences between fibres and spend sufficient time on all the failures which can happen during the manufacturing process. Because those errors will have influences on the mechanical properties.»
- Why the silly comments on assignment 3!? We take our education seriously, don"t joke around with it. Give serious criticism or give none at all! »
- As mentioned before, probably the best course during my education. Considering its the first time its held I am very impressed. »
- I will highly recommend this course to future students. »
- An idea would be to let the students use Matlab during the exam, and instead increase the difficulty of the problems. This would test the students on how well they understand the theory, and decrease the time consuming hand calculations. Otherwise a very interesting and well executed course.»

- The exam was well good, question 1, 3 and 2 b) were very good but 2 a) was a rather bad question. In my opinion this should not be done by hand, it took a very long time. The other questions took a very long time to solve as well so this was really almost impossible to do in time if one wanted to solve the others problems thoroughly.»

- I would also like to see how you can make some joints within the structre. A plate is nice but is has got to be somehow connected to the rest of the structure. I would like to hear also something about those concepts.»

- i learned the most from the first assignment which we may also have used the most time with. The second was not to helpfull due to that many of the matlab code was given so it was not so easy to understand what we actually were doing. It was very good with these assignment and im sure i wouldnt have had the same understanding for the subject without them.»
