Goals and fullfilment of goals

The learning outcomes are given in the course programme, that is the knowledge, understanding, skills and perspectives you are expectd to reach. Notify for each outcome how well they have been fulfilled.

1. Purpose of the design studio

Planning and Design for Sustainable Development in a Local Context is a design studio, divided into three parts (part A, part B & part C), within the master programme Design for Sustainable Development. The thematic of the studio is planning and design for sustainable development in a small or medium-sized municipality in Sweden. The studio includes on-site activities in close cooperation with local authorities and communities.

The aim of the design studio is:
to increase knowledge and understanding of the planning and development problems as well as possibilities of small and medium-sized municipalities/communities/towns in the perspective of sustainable development,
to train the ability to describe, analyse and interpret the local situation in a broad perspective, including spatial and architectural characteristics as well as environmental, social and economic aspects.
to, with a point of departure in an understanding of the conditions of place in a local as well as in a broader context, work out and try visionary principles of planning and design of spatial structures and the built environment, in support of a positive and sustainable development.

2. How do you evaluate the content and design of the design studio part A (Local situation, Broader context, SWOT-analysis and Local development objectives, Planning and design strategies)?

- Good tasks, but some of the full class presentations felt unneccesary or to long. Would have prefered to have that time to listen to everyone in the end of the course instead. » (Good)
- would have been easier with smaller groups, and also info from start on how to cooperate in groups. Also explaining clearer the definition of Goals and Strategies and the difference in between, and relate it to who/what professions works with goals and strategies in "real life" and how we as architectural/planning students are expected to use the knowledge we gain from the exercise in future work. Is their a difference in between how we did it and how people at the planning office work for example and if so - why?» (Good)
- At the beginning it was a little hard to communicate with different people of different background.During these two part we most were practicing the challenge of communication with others!!!it would be better if we had two sessions casual meeting in order to get in mode and getting known with previous project process better. » (Good)

- Really good overall. Parts to improve are the class discussions that sometimes felt like they needed to be more managed than they were. For example the one about together doing the SWOT and together with politicians writing the nine goals. » (Very good)

- Those weeks where very dense but very useful for the part B, it was also very good that it made us know each other by changing group for every work.» (Very good)

- Good with a small "break" and time for reflections, maybe this week could include common discussions about indepth projects?» (Good)
- Liked the theory, but maybe the seminar in whole class where a bit hard to follow. Couldn´,t really hear all people said. Would have been easier if all stood up and held a presentation with some digital slides I think.» (Good)

- It needs more time. Or maybe more critical consultations. Many projects didn"t go deep almost at all.» (Good)

- despite the in-depth process where I was more than involved in my project ,poor knowledge in Swedish made me frustrated really in presentation on site but fortunately it was not so obvious in my presentation! » (Passed)

- It would have saved a lot of time if we knew already during the local context, broader context and our in depth projects that it all was to be presented in A1 landscape with that black line at the bottom. Then everything would already be adjusted to that from the beginning. » (Good)
- It was very interesting to see which organization is behind a more professional presentation as we are used to, and to present at the end in front of a lot of people. Maybe the preparation"s part is a bit unbalanced in term of interest between those making translations and those doing something else, but it was necessary.» (Good)

- I think the literature studies and seminars should have been carried out in smaller groups with more focused themes» (Passed)
- Some of the seminares felt a bit pointless since i felt most people thought they were too long and not very inspiring» (Passed)

- Maybe the "problem" of the last seminar is that it had to be done during part B when we want to focus on the in-depth project. But on the other way, it was really useful (at least for me) as it brought an interesting and useful element for the project.» (Good)

- I feel this could have been done on a more user friendly interface,maybe this is a university issue? google docs, calendar, etc might have been easier to use and update. Things sometimes were a bit confusing» (Passed)

- Like every course during the education with very few exceptions I felt very stressed out at the end, even if I wasn"t lazy and didn´,t save work to the last minute. I think that objectively this education is demanding a lot. » (Passed)
- It would have been better to have more time for the in-depth projects, since after all, they were the ones that meant the most. » (Passed)
- It has been very intensive, but at the same time fun. I don"t think that the time we have spent in school and the working pace is healthy when we start work, but for this short period it worked alright.» (Good)

- Almost only group work, which I like. You learn more from working with others, especially when people come from different backgrounds it really adds something to the education. » (Good)
- Well, not much individual work, so giving separate grades could hence be a problem, not being able to separate the working effort made by different individuals in a group.» (Good)

- More intresting then I had thought. My expectations of Gråbo were very low before the course, but in the end it turned out to be very intresting, and definetly a really relevant topic for the future.» (Very good)

- Classes on how to work with different methods so that we could have the possibility to try new things. »

- I would have liked to get feedback as brief written reviews from different actors in the municipality/politics describing what they think is the relevance of each project to a sustainable municipality. »
- Just making culture of group work and asking student not to dominate on others.sometimes people with great idea pushed out by those dominants specially in part A and B»
- sometimes I have felt maybe "too free" to design and organize the work as I wanted, even during the consultations. Sometimes the students need some limits..»

17. Is there something that has been especially good or especially bad in the design studio?

- Kind of a rapport established between teachers and students. Absolutely no gap between the two groups but the respect and proffessionality was still maintained. Great teachers»
- Good group, and especially that everyone were "forced" to get to know each other through the first weeks group work.»
- Good that we got to present it to politicians and locals and get feedback from them, the first time I"ve had feedback from anyone that is not an architect or engineer. Good reality connection. Also very interesting to do such extensive prestudies, also with the people the projects would affect.»

- The teechers were the best. We got all the information in good time.»
- I really like the close relationship with the municipality, and that we have been able to "test" our ideas on people during the whole period. This has really made it feel like we made a difference for someone, and not just designed for ourselves.»

- Especially good: Practicing talking in front of people all the time! Engagement from the politicians etc in Lerum, it feels like we did something important. The division into different groups for the first part of the course - a good way to get to know everyone.»

18. Do you have any advise for how to improve the design studio?

- Keep the structure and the teachers! »

- Move the translation of part A to directly after part A. Other than that, nothing.»
- Give a little more time to prepare before the interviews on site, decide on a common layout in the first part of the studio so that the poster doesn´,t have to be rearranged as much to the exhibition»
- Maybe take away some of the stress - through talking about it - people in this education are often perfectionists. The standards get very high.»
- Prepare the work from the earlier parts before the presentation week. For example decide that everyone make the posters in the right foramt in the beginning.»
- Ändra sista veckan, fördela översättningsarbetet bättre.»
- Make more clear from the beginning how the final format for the exhibition will be to avoid a lot of extra work and stress during the last week! Consider (if you haven"t done it already)in grade/evaluation the personal effort (or not!) of each student to participate and help the rest of the class when it is about a team or class work. »
- Be clear at the begining to create all poster in landscape, and include the chalmers logo at that point to. That could have saved us half week of work.»

- My personal point of view is to make a balance between the time of the analysis and the in-depth project.»

- One question that I have had in my mind through the design studio is about leadership. I read somewhere that leadership was a ability that was taken into the grading. Since I have studied a leadership course earlier I am curios about what is good leadership according to that grading system. In my view there are many ways to lead a group of people, and not all ways are very visible to people outside the particular group. Just a thought that has been with me in the course. »

- I prefer to have rehearsal one day before and make a group design not only for the exhibition place but also in the presentation room (the churh)... So we can avoid "errors" for example sound system and lighting....»
