- Since a lot of the exam was based on different kinds of calculations, I think that there definitely ought to be some kind of exercises other than the computer exercises or at least calculation examples in the lectures in order to teach the students how to solve them.» (100%)

- Since the recommended course literature was not of that much relevance for the course I would say that the lecture slides and the exercises was the only course material useful for the course.» (Small extent)
- I strongly advice you to skip the book next year. I think the book was a joke and since we are in our fourth or fifth year it was way to simple and it did not focus on facts. It talks about making beer when explaining microarrays!!! Also the book costs over 600 kr which was a huge waste of money!!» (Small extent)
- To be honest, the book was rubbish. In one chapter there was a case-study where you were supposed to imagine you were a student who was trying to brew beer ... and then there was the example of the yeast cells riding on the back of a deer who stopped to feed in a clearing. It was a little bit like a childrens" story, but about systems biology. Though the chapters from the other books that were posted on the homepage were quite good. It was also very good that you could find articles/literature to each lecture posted on the homepage.» (Small extent)

- The course homepage was continuously updated, although some lecture slides were not displayed there before the start of the lectures, which would have been nice. Tobias did a very good job maintaining the course.» (Rather well)

8. How good were the lectures by the different teachers?

Jens Nielsen had the following lectures: Introduction, metabolomics & proteomics, FBA metabolic networks, and regulation. br>
Sergio Bordel Velasco had lectures about dynamic modeling and Metabolic control analysis.
Intawat Nookaew had lectures about genomics, transcriptomics and integrated data analysis.
Tobias Österlund supervised the computer exercises.


- Tobias really contributes a lot to the experiment session and he is extremely paitient with our "stupid" questions. Tack så mycket!»
- Sergio"s lectures would be much better if he learned how to use the blackboards in a more efficient way, e.g. use all the boards available and not only use 2 of 6, try to make the handwriting more readable (like a greater distinction between his 1"s and 2"s). »
- Sergios lectures were in no way structured. He jumped up and down and from side to side of the board writing where he pleased. Very difficult to understand what formulas were actually important.»
- Sergios föreläsningar gav inte alls mycket, han borde strukturera om dem med slides istället likt de andra föreläsningarna.»
- I think it would be much easier to keep in mind "what is going on" also when you talked about more detailed examples, if you would stress the assumptions made, what the differences between the methods are and if these differences arise from the limitations in the methods or if we actually want to gain a sowewhat different information. To state the initial- and boundary conditions so to say.. About Intawat, I do not wish to insult and be mean. He was good at assisting the excersizes but he is not very pedagogic as a lecturer. Not all the things he says "are easy", are infact easy the first time you encounter them. It is also hard to follow "what the point is" and this I think could be better if the things above were regarded.»

- As stated in the question above i would have liked a quick summary of the objectives of the study, maybe compared to the previous ones (for example: this we do when we want to know this/ have this kind of data, whereas the previous excercise gave this information using that kind of data)» (Rather poor)
- Most of the handouts were easy to follow, which made it easy to focus on the theory behind the questions.» (Rather good)
- Although, the latter ones seemed not to improve the learning of the parts of the course, but rather to teach us how to use specific matlab (or other) programs... irrelevant» (Rather good)

- I found it hard to connect the simulations to practical calculations, but I think that they helped in the learning of the theoretical parts of the course.» (Some extent)

- In my opinion, a course is supposed to teach the students how to solve the kinds of problem they are presented to in the exam in beforehand. My experience is that that especially the second question in the exam (40% of the total score) was not accounted for in this course.» (Very difficult)
- I think it was a little bit mean to change the concept of the exam without telling us. SInce there were 4 old exams with the same concept i.e. 5 questions, not to difficult or long, this is what will be expected for the exam and will to a large extent affect how one prepare. If I had known that the concept would change I would have studied more and in a different way. » (Very difficult)

- As the words "Describe the concepts.." are abundant in the aim of the course, I do not find it fair to give a question worth 40p on something that specific (question no.2). This question was based on one outof all the slides handed out during the course. The analysis was not presented thoroughly in the lecture so that means that one would have to learn everything found at the slides much better than presented. I think it is fair to include such question in order to separate out the ones that are worthy of a 5, but as 50p is needed for passing the exam, I do not think the distribution of points was fair. I did not get the impression that we need know all details, and the details we do need to know should therefore atleast be pointed out during the lectures. Furthermore there should be "räknestugor" and excersizes to calculate the things you want us to know!» (Quite difficult)

- Many lectures contained an extreme amount of slides, which led to an unnecessary teaching speed and the exam did not reflect the course content.» (Poor)
- My opinion is that if you have studied at the Bt program at Chalmers for three years this course has no use in being compulsory as the course is today, it should be optional at most.» (Fair)

- If the course is focused on "by hand" calculations I think that there should be some examples of typical questions either during the lectures or in separate exercises.»
- I think it would be a good idea to have some exercises with general cacuations of the type that have been on the exams because it is a little bit weird that the focus of the course is on theory and very advanced computer caculations when the focus of the exam is on calculations on another level. Also, don"t use the book anymore!!!»

- Take away some of the "example" lectures. Examples are always good for the learning process, but it isn"t necessary to have every PhD student in the department present his/her work.»
