- He may know the material, but the structure of the lectures and his language is very difficult to follow. He needs to work on his grammar and pronunciation.» (Really bad)
- Gets the impression that he hasn"t been a teacher for very long. Could improve his blackboard planning since the text tend to cram up and it"s hard to follow the reasoning.» (So and so)
- Just needs more experience» (So and so)
- Erik is knowledgable person and could be a good candidate to be the instructor of this course. But his only weak point is, he could not transfer his ideas to his audiences. I mean teaching and helping people to know what you wanted to teach them is a great skill.» (So and so)
- I think the topics where mostly interesting, and I also think that the set-up was, but the pace was too slow, and the english pronounciation could be better, making the lectures easier to follow.» (So and so)
- I think he will be very good with some practice.» (So and so)
- Large parts of the teaching was good, but sometimes it was a bit unstructured and it was not very easy to follow the lectures.» (So and so)
- He is a very good teacher in Swedish. But he can not convey what he wishes to say using the English language.» (So and so)
- This was so hlefpul and easy! Do you have any articles on rehab?» (So and so)
- Havent been to all the lectures, but the once I did visit were nice!» (Good)
- A bit shaky at first but very good towards the end of the course» (Good)
- Positive improvements from the first to the last lecure! So the end grade of the last lectures would be good.» (Good)
- Could use some thought about what is the (teaching) goal with each lecture. Might be a good idea to outline at the beginning of each lecture what will be covered.» (Good)
- Sometimes he struggles to explain certain things and he do not always suceed. Can be overcome.
He seems engaged and I get a feeling that he wants to do the best for the students. Available to answer questions and he is open for suggestions on how to improve the course, and aware of that the course can be improved.» (Good)
- He is fairly new to teaching but shows enthusiasm and is very helpful.» (Good)
- Well-organized, professional lecture. » (Very good)
- Erik has a lot of potential, but the content of some lectures was too vague.» (No opinion)
7. Mention something that you think was good with the lectures.- The demonstrated computer simulations»
- The examples shown help a lot »
- The case studies.»
- The prepared Mathematica examples which showed simulations in real-time»
- The best experience was when Erik went into detail, clearly explaining something from the beginning to the end.»
- The demonstration of synchronization was nice.»
- I liked all examples»
- A lot of real world examples was studied rather than completely "made up" problems.»
- Good examples.»
- The on-screen simulations and the experiment at the last lecture. Could use some extra minutes explaining some of the simulations.»
- The lectures tied in with the homework problems very well. Also, gave a good overview of different possible research areas in complex systems.»
- The idea of first talking about the contetnt of the course material, then presenting them by some sample programs, which made the main concept clearer.»
- Mix between traditional lecture, use of power-point, use of black-board, showing simulations in real time, and engaging the class in discussion. This is good and keep the students awake. Perhaps even more interesting simulations can be shown to complement the lectures. »
- At the lectures I recieved basic idea and theoretical knowledge about what I should do at the lab.»
- the analysis of complex structures were very interesting.»
- The subjects where interesting, with a good spreading.»
- Generally a good selection of topics.»
- Many nice examples of simulations»
- Relevant examples were given of all concepts.»
- good mixture between power point/ white board, clearly audible and calm lecturing style»
- Mathematica examples where fun»

- labs,projects»
- mathematical/formal info - everything that happened on the blackboard»
8. Mention something that Erik should do different next year.- Have a better structure to his lectures and provide a book/lecture notes for those who want to study the material on their own.»
- Not erase what he writes in the blackboard right after he writes it. He must improve a little his blackboard skills, he tends to be disorganizes. »
- Some of the lectures was a little messy. »
- Some of the material was slightly vague/lacking focus. Please be more specific: define things, work out calculations exactly, be specific.
The pace could be higher.»
- Lecture notes»
- Course literature would be nice provided that there is anything good out there. Is there possible to write a short set of lecture notes?»
- Make the slides available.»
- Could be more structurized when using the blackboard. Be calm even if it"s the first lecture :)»
- As, i mentioned in the 7th part. Erik has some weak points in the first part, teaching and explaining people his ideas. The teacher should suppose that his/her audiences do not have any idea and information about that content of the course and try to expalin them as simple as possible (it should be idiot proof teaching ,))»
- Perhaps prepare more and think before lecture how to explain the difficult parts in both an intuitive way and also more detailed in-depth. »
- In my opinion everything is going fine and I don"t think that something should be changed.»
- it has been quite good.»
- Increase the pace and work on the pronounciation.»
- The first lecture on networks seemed a bit unprepared.»
- I would like a bit more structure on the blackboard.»
- The remarks on the the whiteboard could have been better arranged. Otherwise very well lecture»
- This was so hlefpul and easy! Do you have any articles on rehab?»

- not much, may be more background introduction»
- slides, informal/background stuff, lecture style (speech & rhetorical organisation)»
9. What is your opinion on the computer labs? The computer labs had two purposes: to provide opportunity to ask questions and for examination of the home problems.31 svarande (på denna fråga var det möjligt att välja flera svarsalternativ)

- The computer labs are good but the queue is too long to allow for question asking while solving the problems. This forces you to complete the homework problems before hand and just show the results.» (I prefer writing reports)
- It was very informal, with a friendly atmosphere, and very time-efficient. Not very hard though.» (I did not need to ask questions during the labs, I appreciated the possibility to ask questions)
- With this method focus is put on actually solving the tasks, which i believe is really good! » (I appreciated the possibility to ask questions, I liked this form of examination)
- In this course four lab home works and one project were too heavy. I think it would be better to lessen the number of homeworks or if it should be four, it is better to give people the primary/sample codes of the programs and ask students to improve them rather than inventing the wheel again. Like what Mattias does in his courses. I could learn the Genetic Algorithm by his sample codes and its sample codes is a GA class for one who wanted to learn the GA. By this way, every year students will add some new things to the codes and more educatinal value will be added than just re-writing the same codes. As i checked, lots of teachers in different countries give the sample codes.» (I appreciated the possibility to ask questions, I used the possibility to ask questions, I liked this form of examination)
- Compared with other courses I have taken, I have found to be more efficient to show our work directly in the labs instead of writing reports because:
1) It is more efficient since we don’,t lose time writing reports and we can focus on solving the exercises.
2) The feedback given by the professors and assistants are useful.» (I appreciated the possibility to ask questions, I liked this form of examination)
- I would like the examination to be faster, either by increasing the number of examiners or by making separate lines for examination and questions. Waiting for more than an hour just to get examined felt like a waste of time.» (I did not need to ask questions during the labs, I liked this form of examination)
- this examination form was very good, and ample for this type of class. I don"t think there was time to ask any questions.» (I did not need to ask questions during the labs, I liked this form of examination)

- The questions ask for previously undefined (or poorly defined) concepts. The questions need to be clearer.» (Too hard, They took too much time, I learned a lot from the exercises, The questions where too vague)
- Could been uploaded a bit earlier, one problem was uploaded 2 hours before the labtime.» (Good level, I learned a lot from the exercises)
- The later questions was to hard/time-heavy and the earlier was (a little bit) too easy.» (Too easy, Too hard, Good level, I learned a lot from the exercises)
- The first two assignments were too easy. The third was OK and the last one really good!» (Too easy, Good level)
- Gives you a good understanding of what can be done.» (Good level, The time requirements was well balanced)
- Unbalanced in terms of how easy the initial ones were and how difficult the last ones became.» (Good level, I did not learn that much by doing the home problems)
- One extra full lab may have been useful to tie up any loose ends. Possibly moving the final few labs a week forward to give more of a break before handing in the project may have been useful.» (Good level, They took too much time, I learned a lot from the exercises)
- Some questions were to vague and totally they needed lots of time which had bad effect on the quality of the work.» (Too hard, They took too much time, I learned a lot from the exercises, The questions where too vague)
- I think it is difficult to find a level on the home exercise that satisfy both students with very little experience in and students with lots of experience. I think the solution is to include subquestions in each exercise on different levels - the first ones really "easy" and the last ones really "difficult" to make all students satisfied.
I think the homeproblems were well-formulated and the questions really clear - there was no confusion for me on what to do (just how to do it sometimes) Good!» (I learned a lot from the exercises)
- They didn"t take that much time, they could have been bigger. Though, I think that even if they were quite specific, I learned many simulation-oriented things with broad applications.» (Good level)
- The mistakes on the last examples sheet were very bad. I lost a lot of time trying to get the "correct" answer, and it finally turned out that I had gotten the correct answer at the beginning. The example sheet had the wrong answer (and was still incorrect after the first mistake was corrected).» (Good level, The time requirements was well balanced, The questions where too vague, I would have liked more open ended questions)
- The problems were well-guided and described. From easy tasks to challenging ones they were well mixed» (Good level, The time requirements was well balanced)
- I think the questions were perfectly posed! do not change them. there was a clear aim in sight and it was posible to individual chose how to get there,m perfect balance» (Good level, The time requirements was well balanced, I learned a lot from the exercises)

- Some of the problems had very similar tasks and a few seemed repetitive. Perhaps it would be better to have more diverse problems and to cover task variations differently, maybe by asking more questions per problem or letting the student decide (and discuss, compare) choices of solutions.
It was very nice to work with published material/real data. If possible, this should be kept.» (Good level, The time requirements was well balanced)

- My group mates have worked much more with the project than me, also pulling it in another direction than I would have choosen, but I see that as a consequence of me having focused too little on the project.» (Rather well)

- Did not feel that the course had any real structure. The lectures where on very different topics which made it feel like we didn"t really learn anything, just scratch some surfaces. There was no litterature to read. Everything I learned in this course was during the homeproblems which I found interesting.
I also find it would have been better it the projects where more structured. Maybe you could have some topics premade which people are able to choose from. Then have an early deadline with some action plan hand-in to confirm that the groups have formed and started working.
To check that groups are actualy working it might be good to have at least two scheduled meetings with the supervisors.» (Fair)
- This was so hlefpul and easy! Do you have any articles on rehab?» (Fair)
- I think would be nice with something more of a red thread throughout the course» (Adequate)
- Not too challenging, but it does not have to be. » (Good)
- The chance to study an open ended project this early in the programme has been good. The homework problems set in this course have given a good overview of different aspects of complex systems.» (Good)
- The overlap with previos courses for Teknisk Matematik was to big. A lot of the lectures were very similar to lectures in Miljö och Matematisk Modellering.» (Good)
- funj» (Good)
- One of the better lectures in my study career. Interesting, good time scope and a high learning outcome» (Excellent)
20. What should definitely be preserved to next year?- -»
- homework and labs. The examination methods »
- The home problems.»
- The lecture on game theory»
- The network stuff is good. Kristian"s lecture on game theory was very good and went beyond the obvious.»
- Home problems»
- The set up with examination in forms of Homework and a project.»
- Home problem format. Writing reports can often take a lot of effort with no real extra reward.»
- 1. Presenting more sample codes to students
»
- homework and project»
- I think computer labs and existing format of examination should be preserved to next year.»
- the lab work, and the project»
- Having a bigger project like this is great.»

- home problems, project, scientific content, examination organisation»
21. What should definitely be changed to next year?- Structure of lectures and course literature.»
- Should implement one or more texts to follow»
- A clearer structur, and be sure to mention what theory will be on the homeproblems.»
- Better structure on the course, specially the group projects.»
- The homework problems should be more even difficulty.More structure to the project.»
- The material on agent-based modelling is vague and lacks scientific value. Could we talk more about how to interpret results, what AB-models actually mean, etc? Some of the material from Epstein"s book could be used in the course for a discussion.»
- Slightly more theory during the lectures if possible.»
- A homework problem based on the game theory lecture rather than the final networks home problem may have been more interesting.»
- 1. The way of teaching in a more interactive way, better courses materials and sources (To the point sources and lectures)
2. Load of homeworks
3. If the load of homeworks would not change, giving students the sample codes to improve them»
- It"s possible to add more lectures since they are rather few.»
- As I told above for me everything works fine.»
- everything is quite fine!»
- The homework problems must be made clearer.»
- I would like to have more discussions about what one can expect to get from a simulation and how one can know if it really captures the relevant features of a system.»

- nothing»
- A few topics mentioned in the syllabus were skipped. If time is an issue, maybe they could be synthesized in one (extra) lecture or the students could choose what to drop.»
- lecture style, the "big story", documentation»
22. Additional comments- Please underline that the Homework problems are homework, so that more people are prepared for the labs. »
