Goals and goal fulfilment

The programme syllabus states the goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the education. The learning outcomes are (excerpts):

After the master programme in Automotive Engineering the students should be able to

•,,,,,,,, identify and discuss vehicles as complex systems from a technical and a social perspective through a broad platform in automotive engineering.

•,,,,,,,, analyse new technical challenges and to create technical advancements in the automotive industry by three specialisation tracks, Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics or Safety.

•,,,,,,,, synthesize and evaluate automotive systems and products in terms of direct use and lifecycle analysis through consideration of environmental and economic aspects.

•,,,,,,,, through applications and practice
o utilize automotive related IT- and product development tools.
o demonstrate skills necessary for managing and contributing to team-based engineering activities and projects in a multi-cultural environment.

Programme layout

The Automotive Engineering programme consists of one introduction course about automotive vehicles and industry followed by 3 courses, one from each of the areas of Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics and Safety. Last two mandatory courses are chosen from 2 of the 3 areas. Depending on preferences, the student can then take two extra courses within one or two of the specialisations.

7. What do you think of the programme layout?

- The introduction course and the first safety course (Vehicle and traffic safety) are not good courses. » (OK)
- maybe a bit too much freedom in selecting courses after the 3rd quarter. 4th quarter courses should maybe also have been semi-mandatory, since it is an automotive program after all.. » (Good)
- The number of good courses to choose from year 2 within the program is insufficient.» (Good)
- could be better cooperation between courses so that same subject is not covered twice or that same subject is brought up again when needed as a reminder» (Good)
- Especially that 2 of the 3 areas can be studues rather than just one.» (Very good)

8. Do the mandatory courses cover the main topics that you believe an Automotive Engineer should know?

These courses are Internal combustion engines, Engineering of automotive systems, Vehicle dynamics, Vehicle and traffic safety.

- In the present form of vehicle and traffic safety this course does not influence people to choose more courses in this area. » (To some extent)
- I would like to have more about chassi-structure design. Dimensioning a chassi. Also courses about gearboxes and planetary gears would have been nice!» (To some extent)
- I honestly believe Vehicle and traffic safety can be made optional. This is a very specialized branch that only needs to be pursued if one is interested in research with in this area» (To a certain extent, yes)
- Combustion engines and vehicle dynamics are VERY good courses! Introduction course is interesting, but level might have been set a bit higher. (But in general it is also a good course!) Safety doesnt fullfill the expectactations at all. (see comment below)» (To a large extent, but not completely)
- Maybe some more on "green" stuff, not making it boring but rougher point at "problems" with eg. alternative fuels and how to technically solve them. » (To a large extent, but not completely)
- In the basic course of safety, the active safety part can be improved on especially on sensor technolgies, intergration (but ofcourse just an introduction) rather than discovering it ourselves thruogh the "wiki" page assignments. » (To a large extent, but not completely)
- but then specilazation is needed in one of the areas (powertrain, veh.dyn., safety)» (Yes definitely)

9. Do you miss a course or a topic in the master programme?

- Alternative fuels and engines for those and alternative types of propulsion. » (Yes)
- Durability-Life cycle of products : estimation of which is crucial and a lot of research goes into this in the industry. » (Yes)
- Manufacturing / production» (Yes)
- The major role electronics play in the an automotive system.» (Yes)
- i do not really miss a course, but i would like to have everyrthing more detailed... sometimes it feels like we are just scratching the surface of interesting things. but i also see a conflict with time...» (Yes)
- Specific aerodynamics courses as in design of low drag vehicles, design of high downforce vehicles, and wing design.» (Yes)
- Chassidesign and Gearboxes» (Yes)
- ...and a social perspective through a broad platform in automotive engineering. ...in terms of direct use and lifecycle analysis through consideration of environmental and economic aspects.» (Yes)
- But there could be a part about control theory in a corse. Not actual calculations but there could be some facts about CANbus system and alternatives, engine management systems etc..» (No)

10. Are there any courses that you think should either be heavily revised or even removed from the programme?

17 svarande

Yes»12 70%
No»5 29%

Genomsnitt: 1.29

- Vehicle and traffic safety. Chalmers is considered an expert in this field. This is not reflected in the safety course. Technical level is much too low and course content is not very interesting. Course should focus much more on technical aspects of safety. » (Yes)
- Not be removed but be revised, Vehicle and Traffic safety.» (Yes)
- Heavily revised: - Vehicle and Traffic Safety - Advanced Active Safety» (Yes)
- Safety tries to jam too much info into one course. Better with overall knowledge and then an advanced course. Eng.Aut.Syst, is at least for a non novice too basic. Some parts of that course though might rougher be covered in eg. vech.dyn course. » (Yes)
- Vehicle and traffic safety, when offered as a generalized compulsory course becomes very much of an ad-hoc course. Some of the assignments are quite low to be considered master level courses.» (Yes)
- Vehicle and traffic safety» (Yes)
- Definetly not removed, but the additional safety courses could be worked a bit on.» (Yes)
- Advanced Active Safety» (Yes)
- the safety course: i do not agree on mandatory lectures. guest lecutres is maybe a different thing, but normal lectures should not be mandatory. you have grown up students here. so the solution is to make the lectures valueable/interssting and not mandatory, to get students to attend. i know that for safety attendance was a big issue. but the problem is not the studetns (since we manage to go to "all" other lectures). the problem are the lectures, which are unfortunatelly not well presented. the topic could be an interessting one. i do not want to offend anybody, but there should be some improvement possible. » (Yes)
- Safety courses... Some people are just not interested in safety so why should they be mandatory courses?!» (Yes)
- I think the safety course should be heavily revised. I know it has been alot of discussions about this course and I´,m pretty sure I did wrote all my opinions aboout that course when I answered the questionnaire to that course.» (Yes)

11. Impressions of the Powertrain specialisation.

What is your impression of the

- In the ICE advanced course, I felt there was too much theory on research and not all that practical»
- There could always be more practise, but I know it is hard to fix. If you don"t do Formula Student, in the engine group, you will lack some practical knowledge. BUT the GT-Power exercises in Advanced ICE course is a good way to compromise between theory and practise.»

What is your impression of the

Matrisfråga

- Teachers are in a big range. Lennart Löfdahl is brilliant, pedagogic and good in bringing the subject without being boring to listen to. Vechicle Dynamics is more so-so and can be a really pain in the ass to understand and listen to (bit boring, and that is not the subject but rougher the way it is thought). Adv.Vech.Dyn is better than the basic course. »
- I really feel the basic course needs to be administered by good teachers. It was much to be desired during the basic course. The Measurement Techniques was an ad-hoc course wanting much to be desired.»
- Vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics should be two separate specializations cause they are not related at all to one another»

NOTE! Only answer this question if you attended at least 2 of the 3 courses in the Safety specialisation (Vehicle and Traffic Safety, Advanced Active Safety, Advanced Passive Safety).
What is your impression of the

Matrisfråga

- I believe there are not enough courses within the safety specialization. Adv. Active Safety should be heavily revised. Adv. Passive Safety is now clearer with a larger focus on Biomechanics which is good but I also believe that the program is missing a course on structural dynamics/crash deformationt, this is something that a safety specialist should be more familiar with. »
- The courses is lacking a bit in organisation, which is bad since the teachers have a lot of knowledge in their respective areas, but sometimes its hard for the student to grasp. The Safety courses are OK, but they should be world leading considering the competence and knowledge that Gothenburg has.»

14. What is your impression of the automotive project courses: Automotive Engineering Project, Chalmers EcoMarathon and Chalmers Formula Student?

Please comment your answer!

Matrisfråga

- Eco - problem solving and not inventing the wheel again. Formula - unfortunately inventing the wheel each year form the same point instead of developing even better concept from year to year. Maybe too high workload on the participants vs credit. »
- I must say the grading for the Formula student project is not all that transparent at all. »
- It takes alot of time, BUT you learn alot. There could be shorter meetings and more doing.»
- well in short: you learn a lot in lectures, but you will forget most of it unfortunatelly. the education i git in formula is a life expereience i will never forget and the gained knowledge will be of greatest use for me in future!!! also we are representing chalmers (and this year extremely good). the projects should have the biggest support from the univerity possible. it is the education that lasts!»
- I have been part in both formula student and Automotive project which was partially related to the Ecomarathon project since it was about Vera2. The above projects and in particular formula student are the most effective in the learning process since they push the student to think outside the box and look for solutions that are not found in a textbook but in papers, books, and other teams" designs which is exactly what an engineer is supposed to be able to do in industry. It gives the student the ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines which is a highly sought quality. Not to mention that such projects on a student"s CV is very desirable for most automotive companies.»

29. Do you believe an internship system would have any impact on student"s choice of masters programme?

In the future, there are prospects of enhanced collaborations with the industry at the end of the masters studies. For example, a few of the masters students at this program may be guaranteed summer job and/or a short term project employment with Volvo. So, do you think such a system would make more students choosing this programme?

- It is always good with more company interaction!» (To some extent)
- I was part of the VESC program at Volvo this summer and it was a great experience. more importantly it would be a huge plus to one master"s thesis if he gets a summer job in the same field.» (Yes definitely)
- Internship is an area we are behind in Sweden. It"s needed and is of great value both for present understanding during internship and for future work. HANDS ON experience is very important. » (Yes definitely)

30. What should definitely be preserved?

- Combustion courses!!!»
- The very open environment between the departments and students, the fact that many students get jobs within the departments is great and gives the student a great chance for learning more within the subject and building networks with industry/academic people. »
- The powertrain and vehicle dynamics specialization streams»
- The Powertrain courses and The teachers! (Specially Sven and Mattias) Generally the teachers are really good I think, and have interaction with industri which is good. »
- RVAD»
- the overall automotive master ,) and he specifications of ice, vehicle dynamics and safety»

31. What should definitely be changed?

- Vehicle and traffic safety»
- The automotive projects is a large part of the program, but there are many students who do not participate in these projects, these students should no»
- Eco Marathon SHOULD be given again as a course! Where are the "green" credentials now of Chalmers and Automotive Engineering?»
- Vehicle and traffic safety should be administered as a specialized track. The Road vehicle aerodynamics advanced course should be revised or removed. A course on durability, fatigue life and material selection from an automotive perspective is a MUST. »
- Some organisation in some courses so it is more clear for the student what he/she should do in a course, better course PM that is followed could maybe help this issue.»
- Vehicle Dynamics»
- presenting skills of some guest lecturers and also some chalmers teachers. everything is more successful if presented well. and also easier to remember.»
- Updating all the content, More "responsibility-oriented courses (i.e. automotive production, business,...).»

- The overall impression of the automotive program is great and I would choose it again without question. That said, I would advise you to continue to push for good student/teacher relations and information concerning student health issues so that overwhelming study load situations can be noticed and handled in an early phase. It seems as though stresshandling and study environment lectures might be something to conduct in the beginning of the program.»
- More courses should be given in aerodynamics with more focus on the field since it is a major factor in the reduction of fuel consumption and handling of cars.»
- The teachers in Automotive and other helpers like PhD staff are very good, helpful and simply gives motivation to perform better and aim higher. »
