6. To what extent has the teaching been of help for your learning?

- Since the other course I was taking took a lot of time towards the end of the period, I didn"t feel I had the time to go to lectures.» (Some extent)

7. About the hand-in exercises: Did you get enough time and help? Would you prefer fixed office hours for that? Did you feel motivated to resubmit insufficient solutions? Other comments?

- Hand in exercise were unclear if they were passed or not. Could use something less ambiguous than OK. Like "passed" if no corrections are necessary. The last example sheet was a nightmare.»
- I only had to resubmit one exercise set, and it didn"t have many serious problems either. And I prefer books/notes to lectures, so office hours are not useful for me. »
- The took plenty of time, the last set was really hard... But I found it very useful.»
- There was enough time. It is good that you can resubmit solutions, because you learn more.»

- More help and better feedback is needed. Feedback in the form of the level of clearness of the question is not giving me anything more then a grudge.»
- When comparing accepted solutions to those of others, I felt that some student got of easy while others had to do more. There seemed to be occasions where one student got his solution accepted where another had to resubmit when solutions, even though solutions where basically the same. I think that unclear/insufficient feedback might be one of the villains behind this.»
- I enjoyed them, all but the last was relatively easy and maybe the level could be slightly slightly higher»
- The only hand in exercise I could have used a little bit more time and help with was the last one. Maybe it would be a good idea not to hand out the hardest question last in the course. »

- There was enough time. The help was given if asked for it. Some time there was some misunderstanding on the feedback, resulting that one may have spend time on solving wrong problems. »

- - concept of resubmissions worked very well - however, sometimes the hints could be more helpful, but of course, this is non-trivial without spoiling the solution - If you don"t get to the correct solution, you have no chance to understand - it would be great to discuss the solutions to hand-in exercises in the exercise sessions (possibly in an extra session).»

- The next year I think you should use the fire system for submissions. Then you can see if you have submitted the work and have a more definitive respone if the submission was accepted or rejected.» (Rather well)
- Comments were on time (even though that time wasn"t set, duh) and were very comprehensive. Excellent job with that aspect.» (Very well)

- Most of the exercises had totally unnecessary hints which made the problems easy if not trivial. When you have to work hard on the problem you understand it and the underlying solution method much better than if you breeze through it. Therefore suggestion: remove hints, or at least offer them only to the students who are actively seeking help. » (Too low)
- A bit to low. I reckon some of the hand-ins could be extended. But then again, having some spare time for individual studies is always handy.» (Low)

- I like the structure of the course, with weakly assignments and take home exam. It is very nice that peter takes his time to give feedback to all students and that you have opportunity to correct misstakes and so on. More courses at chalmers should be like this.»
- The amount of feedback, and the effort put into all feedback, that you provide. I never got "it"s wrong. Redo it.". This is very common in labs in other courses, and always very frustrating!»

16. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- The only thing I can think of is that the we had two week with the second last assignment which was rather easy but only one week with the last that was very hard. Maybe that could be changed so that you have two weeks with the hard one instead.»
- I think you should try to not use mail for hand-ins. its easy for me to lose track of what has been excepted, and what has not.»

- It would have been appreciated with more time on the last hand in exercise. A possible solution would have been not wait with this hand in exercise to the last week. »
- Get an overal view of what we are doing. We just went for a new problem in every lecture, and I didn"t understand how the different problems correlated.»
- - The outline could be clearer. Instead of just going from one problem to the other, it would be helpful to divide the course into several chapters in order to make the structure clearer. »

17. Additional comments

- Compared to the first algorithms course, this course felt a bit "less general". The first course focused on techniques more than on examples, and here we mostely followed the examples of already solved problems. Maybe I am wrong about it, but that is my impression. »

- The grading is not at all transparent. It seems to depend on an overall impression rather than having points for exercises and exam questions. I have not gotten my grade yet, so I am not complaining because I"m not happy with my grade. Secondly, I don"t know yet if the grade will be explained when we get it. This is certainly necessary because at the moment I have no real idea how the grading is done. I find it more convenient to have a regular grading system with points for exercises and a scheme of grading. It makes it easier for students to understand their grade and for teachers to argue that the grade is justified.»
