7. How understandable are the course goals?

Course goals:

After the course the students must be able to:

Plan experiments according to a proper experimental design. Choose the appropriate experimental design for different circumstances.

Analyse and evaluate experimental results properly according to different methods (ANOVA, regression ...)

Describe and apply fundamentals (in statistics and exp design) such as hypothesis testing, degrees of freedom, factorial design, and regression and so on according to course material.

Master students (KBT120):

Understand and apply fundamentals in multivariate data analysis (PCA and PLS).

- I"ve attented all lectures, calculated all the tasks and done all old examinations. I kept up with the lectures in time, and yet the examination didn"t go well at all. I think this was because the examination contained numerous questions that never had been mentioned in any task, lecture or previous examination before.» (No, not at all)
- Some of the questions were reasonable but some were what I and many others feel, a lot away from what has been the main focus of the course. One of the 8p questions were a combination of blocking and replicates, something we never at all practiced and none of the excersizes handled. This is wrong, ok that there should be hard wuestions on an exam but the majority of the questions should at least be about the major focus of the course education, which I strongly feel is not the case! I am quite positive that I passed the exam but I dont think that it was a fair and relevant exam in the perspective of the main focus of the corse!» (To some extent)
- The exam was a bit odd comparing to older theses. It was sometimes hard to understand what really was the question even when asking.» (To some extent)

- Det är inget fel på Claes som föreläsare men det är inte tillräckligt för att kunna lösa övningsuppgifterna samt för att klara tentan.» (Adequate)

- I think the lectures were really good. Its a pity though that the connection between Claes and Jan(who made the tasks and examination) was very bad. Jan didn"t seem to know the subjects mentioned in the lectures, and this led to an examination filled with questions that weren"t mentioned anywhere before. Basically it felt like anything that was mentioned in the coursebook could come on the examination, since Jan didn"t know what was mentioned during the examination. It didn"t really matter if you had attended previous lectures, calculated tasks and so on since something completely different could come on the examination. » (Good)

- Känns lite märkligt när det kommer in en föreläsare och håller en föreläsning. Hade varit bättre om Claes höll i alla föreläsningar. Det blir mer sammanhängande då.» (Fair)

- The mvda part was in general totaly unmotiveted and wrong implemented. Eng did not even got a proper chance to do a good work.» (Fair)

- Hard to set a average grade due to large difference in english knowledge. Would like to avoid mentioning teachers but it is obvious that Jan rodmar has a lower grade of english and he haft to speak up found it extremely hard to hear him. This is unfortunate with regards to his extensive knowledge.» (Adequate)

- I couldn"t attend to all of the classes and tried to print out the handouts on my own but they were to big fore the printers at school. If i removed all pictures from the pages i coud prin but, since almost all the information is in the pictures there weren"t much information left after doing this. §» (Rather badly)

- Totaly uselsess. It did not fit in the course at all and felt just unnecessary. Please if you want to implement this part in the cource, do it propertly, now we just got a step to step manual and a computer program to work with. The theory is unclear, the goal with this part is unclear and I still dont understand the main idea of the project. A tip for next year is to have mvda analysis as a part of the course the first three weeks and start the optimization project in week four then we have the theory for it. But most imortant, make it feel as a part of the course.» (Poor)

- Det är ofattbart att ha en räknekurs där det inte ges en enda räknestuga. Det fungar inte att ha rester på 15 minuter som enda tillfälle för 60 studenter att ställa frågor.» (Very poor)
- Man borde ha utsatt tid, typ "räknestuga" så man kan gå dit å räkna och få hjälp. Det fanns ingen tid på räkneövningarna för frågor. å sen när man gick och fråga jan var han antingen inte där eller så var han rätt otrevlig» (Very poor)
- There was no specific time for this, an idea, since Rodmar shouldn"t be teaching in english in full class, is to have him consultation where students can ask questions individually.» (Rather poor)

- Sista delen i kursen, man hinne inte räkna dessa enorma matriser om man ska hinna med allt.»

- The examination and calculations are so boring. This exam I sat 4 hours and hit the calculator and 1 hour to lookup theory in the book - I dont think that measure my knowledge at all. The course should be about the ideas and theorys and not about be able to use plus and minus. Why not have a computer based exam? »

- Maybe not so many tutorials, but lessons where you can work on your own and ask when needed. Jan Rodmar would be excellent at this, as he may not be the best person to speak loud, though he is great at explaining eye to eye.»

- It was often very difficult to understand what Jan Rodmar, who held the exercises, was saying since he spoke quite low and had trouble with the english language. I think I would have learned more if he spoke swedish. Maybe someone else could have the exercises with the exchange students.»

- the MVDA part. I don"t like small part of a course that don"t belong to the other. Better to have another course in MVDA!»
- I would thick about switching Rodmar and to have some more experienced persons as optimization project leaders. »
- Please replace Jan. Also it would be appreciated if the course would cover the use of common statistical software. This could easily be implemented in the optimization project and since everyone in the real world use them it would seem useful to have seen them before. Being able to calculate ANOVAs by hand really isnt that useful, instead we could use the time to learn how to interpret the results»

- The examination must be MUCH better! I think the someone that attented everything, calculated all tasks in time and done all examination should have a chance to get a good result. But if the examination contains things that weren"t during the lectures or excercises, than anything that"s in the book can come on the examination. In this case you have to learn things DURING the examination, and it does not matter at all wether you"ve attended lectures or not. »

- I think the course was really fun and I enjoyed it. I think that the lectures were good, the calculation excercises were good in order to solve the questions. BUT i"m a really disappointed with the examination, since it contained so many new moments. :)Nothing personal, it"s just that I expected to perform well! » (Fair)

- For the next time it would really be nice if just not SOME of the students got access to a full and good swedish compendia of solved examples. It reached me 5 days before the exam but apperantly some student got hold of it from a teacher already in the first weeks. This would have increased my study-efficience by really lot and is really not ok that it is handed out to a few students who have the guts to ask for it! Hand it out to everyone or noone, its not fair that some student should have an easier and better teachings than others.» (Good)
