Goals and fullfilment of goalsThe overall purpose is to provide all students, regardless of their subsequent choice of master´,s programme and design studios, with a foundation and an ability to creatively and critically consider and reflect on questions related to the planning, design and management of the built environment in regard to sustainable development. To independently seek knowledge and information from different sources, as well as to reflect upon the implications of the vision of sustainable development in relation to architecture and planning, constitute important parts of the course.The purpose is, moreover - to give an orientation about global challenges concerning environmental degradation, climate change and development issues - to provide an orientation and an understanding of different perspectives on sustainable development - to present different approaches to the implementation of the call for sustainable development within the planning, design and management of the built environment at different levels (global–,local) and in different settings - to encourage critical reflection regarding what the notion sustainable development entails for the planning, design and management of the built environment and for professional practices within these fields 1. Genomsnitt: 3.18 - It was to much compulsory literature in my opinion. Some of the articles were not so good in my opinion. For example the one about zero carbon cities. They said that they would design a city that would not emit GHGs but they did not say in detail how they would do that other than with renewable energy sources and "better" planning.» (Rather large) 7. Genomsnitt: 4.44 - We sort of had the same course the last year of my bachelor degree here at chalmers, so it was all old news for me.» (Bad) 13. What should be preserved for next year?- Everything. 80% närvaro, seminars, compulsary litterature, the build up of first a picture of the "situation" then ways to be as an architect. Good guiding questions to the seminars and report. »- nothing i can think of!» - There is a movie called Water the Great Mystery by Saida Medvedeva and Vasiliy Anisimyv which may be interesting to be presented, just as a mind breaking view of how much we still don"t know» - The entire corse» - I think the assignment was the strongest part. Working on the assignment was more important than the reading and should have put more focus on that.» - The diversity of different lectures. The small groups to the assignment presentation were great. There ist much time to discuss all issues on an individual scale.» - All good!» - Seminars, Group discussions, the hole structure of the programme is OK.» - guest lecturers seminars» - The very open final assignment. That you have the possibility to write about things relevant to your future profession.» - I like the procedure: 1) to threaten 2) to show way 3) to find out own way. And there was great the possibility to get to literature and lectures on web-sites. That was perfect.» - The large number of lecturers from different backgrounds» - Schedule, organization.» - Almost everything» - all» - Lectures with Lena Falkheden (Straw bales), Kaminsky (Super Sustainable City), Niklas Wennberg (pigs etc), were very inspiring and stand out a little extra in my head.» - The width of knowledge in the lectures/movies/films. I really enjoyed the lecture of Kristel de Myttenaere.» - The lecture from the woman from Delft, which concretizised the topic of sust del in Architecture in a nice way» - Maybe less students. Less printed material.» - The links to films and lectures on the internet as course "literature". » - Det mesta» - no opinion..» - The large scope of the different speakers during the lectures!» - The over all structure» - The structure of this lecture (in between lecture and literature studies and sharing our knowledge and discussion)» - The good content and high level of lectures» 14. What should be changed for next year?- Maybe a better designed group discussion? It was pretty lame in our group. I dont know how though. Too little time for discussion (in our group) at examination. Examinators should read the A4 aswell?»- maybe not every page handed out had to be printed out for every student, maybe you could save some money/environmental impact on that ,)» - nothing i can think of right now!» - don"t change the structure, may be try to find new projects that have been developed in the past year and present them along with new technology. » - Nothing» - I just think that the course could be more focus on examples the last week. » - I felt there might have been some teambuilding activities in the beginning. For example to see who is in which masters program( I found out that some people had not decided yet which masters program they were on but that seemed strange to me since when I applied had to choose a specific masters program ). For me it would be easy to remember seeing the program as a group of people but harder to ask everyone individually and try to remember as I have done. The whole crowd can be a bit difficult because it is so large. Some "silly" (or serious) games and activities can do a lot for the group. We have been encouraged to discuss the contents of the lectures in brakes, but in my case the matters of discussion were mostly the outline of the course and the school and then about each others backgrounds and different nationalities, which is, I think, very natural.» - the last seminar not 2 days before assignment. Too little time! The films should take place in the lecture halls because the seats in A-salen are not appropriated for long sitting. » - study visits?» - Less printed information» - lectures spread over several days not 8 hours of lectures. smaller group for one lectures. pm and literature not printed, a HUGE waste of paper (especially in a course about sustainability!)» - Movies should be watched in VM or VB. It"s good enough, even better chairs.» - I would add some cross critique from resort of economy and other enemy resorts of sustainability.» - Maybe it would be interesting to show to everyone some of the optional films of the "film festival", because I found the two "Cities on speed" and the one about Cuba very interesting.» - A second edition of the report delivered in the presentation day. This will give an opportunity to the student to reedit her/his report in order to explain what has not been clear to her/his collegues after the presentation instance. To be handed in the day after the presentation 18hs.» - N/A» - I think once choosing guest lectures "inspiriting" lecturers should be prioritized to the ones than are just "informative". Niklas Wennberg and Transition Allingsås are examples of that kind of inspiring lectures. » - nothing» - I have no comment to do.» - Change the date for the second seminar, it was too late, or too close to the course assignment. maybe it"s enough with just one seminar. » - The period dedicated for climate change could be shorter in order to lengthen the period dealing with design profession and tools as an architect/ urban planner...» - I think the part about examples or solutions for sustainble development should be extended. As an architect you don"t want to hear about all the problems, you want to find solutions or listen to ideas.» - too much about environment, too little about architecture» - if the literature material had a more clear classification, maybe it will work more efficient.» - I think the sustainable stategy of skyscrapers and tier buildings are missing in the class. We only see the way of building small houses and ignore one important part of architecture to be sustainable. Small house is enough in Sweden, but we could be more international, right?» - Maybe change the design of the group discussion to a written draft for the final assignment- to help the writing process to start earlier.» - There is a lot of questions that remain unanswered in the course. We saw a lot of problems but we didn"t find a lot of answers for: How to do it well. Maybe it is good task for the next time to focus on tying to find more answers if there are some. To show more possibilities not just misery. Students need not just something to think about but either something they can build on.» - The size of the class should be smaller, maybe have 2 lecturers come at same time in different rooms.» - More seminars ang group interaction maybe with the seminarists or/and responsibles for the course» - Perhaps some lectures could be deleted, because some topics where repeated mostly the same way, and some days there were lots of lectures, basically on mondays.» - have more focus on solutions - what are the sustainable design now or future. i find too much focus on why we need sustainabiliity and quite negative tone. a bit too much threat. add in a bit more technical aspects of sustainability. » - all» - I"d like to see more creativity, somewhere to "spit out" ideas etc...Maybe some workshop or think tank.» - Give some ENGLISH LESSONS to the ones giving the lectures!!» - Personally I felt like 4 pages is much to write in that short amount of time, especially when one wants to make a high quality paper. I also felt that the focus of the lectures with examples of architecture lay on energy and environmental sustainability. It would have been nice to see more of other important values. Hellre för alla i stor sal än lilla a-salen. » - don"t change anything» - Trying to integrate more of architecture"s aspects!» - Information to the speekers. 1. Tell about what previous speekers has said so that they don"t have to say the same thing. Or if they do they can adopt by not presenting it as new extraordinary information. 2. It becomes embarassing when a speeker brags about swedish inventions for the 7th time in a mixed class such as ours.» - The fisrt group discussion can transform the same as the last day(poster presantation and cross discussion day ). Since, one of lecturer or architecture can show us different aspects to think deeply.» - I think the assignment discussion would have gone further if we kept the seminar group» - mer hands-on exempel tidigt, väldigt tungt i början av kursen när all information var negativ vår presentationsgrupp var ganska dålig. våra handledare verkade knappt ha ögnat igenom våra texter och kunde till och med ses himla med ögonen när elever presenterade. Vissa personer blev hårt ansatta och kritiserade på ett mycket märkligt sätt. Flera grupper hade diskussioner och peppade samtal men i vår grupp var det bara irrelevant kritik och ingen möjlighet för elever att diskutera.» 15. Other comments- Inspiring course. +++mix of female and male lecturers! »- very good course! and good assignments» - The course was very enlighting» - Very good organisation.» - After taking the course I have a better formed understanding of the relation of my chosen profession, architecture, to sustainable development.» - I believe the course runned very smoothly and is definitely thought stimulating. Very satisfied with the outcomes.» - I had some problems understanding the courses in English, but it is a problem that comes from me!» - An interesting question is how you change people"s approach to sustainability and saving the planet. To make us frightened hasn"t helped so far, good examples are important but doesn"t really do the trick. A combination of them both do somehow sum up the course. But are there better ways to make people care? This could be a topic for discussion in the course.» - You have opened my eyes, thank you.» - Enjoyed the course, even though I had previous knowledge of most issues. A would suggest a seminar at the end of every week to discuss both readings and lectures. The large volume of information seemed to make people a bit distant. Maybe a weekly review/discussions would help students digest the information in smaller chunks?» - Well done, I really feel I"ve learned something this course! =)» - Maybe we should have a lecture with more practical details in sustainable buildings. Some guides in how one is constructed.» - Bra kurs! Bra att ni delade upp grupperna efter ursprung så det blev en varierad diskussion.» - Thank you very much» - I think, personally, the main problem of the AMU018 is the lack of architectural aspects and, in particular, architectural responses! It was really interesting to see the different way of thinking the sustainability and the different issues of the Sustainabilty! But too often, it misses the architectural point of view, an architectural response for an architectural problem (it was too often, an technical response for a social problem)!» - Keep up the good work» - Bra och inspirerade lärare för kursen!»
