Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course. More specifically the course goals were expressed as:

To provide knowledge of, and training in, methods and skills used in research and investigations.

To enable students to choose between alternative techniques to collect and process data and to evaluate the trustworthiness of research data and analyses.

To improve the students" ability to present research results.

At the end of the course the student should be able to prepare a brief for a research project and to evaluate and decide on methods for a master"s thesis.

- Good combination of workshops, exam and lectures that together tested my knowledge. However, it is always up to the student himself/herself how much effort to put in» (Yes, definitely)

- always a bit sceptic to have replicated questions from prev. exams to that extent. can pass the exam by only looked at last years exam. » (To some extent)

- What was said during these guestlectures was good, but it could have been said in half the time.» (Some extent)
- He never got to his point (just talked and talked but nothing interesting came from it), the exercises he provided during the lectures where meaningless. At the first lecture he asked us what we wanted to learn from him but he never lived up to those expectations. Just let him have 1 session next time (If he is allowed back). » (Small extent)

- Sari is a really good speaker and seems knowledgeable about the subject. She put a lot of focus on the introduction part though and didn"t seem very flexible about other ways of doing it, it was either do as she recommends or you will fail. » (Large extent)

- It was hard to understand what Sverker thought about what we had written, most of the tutoring time was spent talking about what other subjects was interesting.» (Some extent)
- They were way to early, there is no idea to have tutoring when we havent started!» (Some extent)
- We got nice input, but Sverker has a tendency to think that every thing is interesting and talk in riddles (you have to read between the lines and really push to be able to ask you questions). I"d would have wanted to know how good or bad it was so we new what exactly to work on. » (Some extent)

- This is a really good way of working, since you have the opportunity to improve the work» (Large extent)
- it was nice to get some input from others, but it will not result in any major changes. » (Small extent)
- I feel that if you are getting comments from your classmates you should also get comments from the teacher or the teacher should go over the opponent before it is handed to the proposal-autors, since we are only students and maybe not equipped to judge whether a report is good or not. If we are using that to help us with our grade it should be something that we can fully rely on. Also, this class has never done opposition before, there might have been an example to show how this usually looks.» (Small extent)

- I appreciate the fact that the exam didn"t stand for 100% of the course because I know that I"ll probably forget the definition of many concepts in the literature and if I have to use it later I"ll look it up. When studying for the exam I gained more understanding of the material and that was useful. However it kind of felt like I was just remembering this for the exam and then it could go out again. The exam could be more "hands-on" and less theory. » (Large extent)

- The last two weeks have been horrible. First the MTP, then the SixSigma report, then two exams in a row (why cant people in the same corridor talk to each other?)» (Too high)
- This course was fair but there was so much too do in the other course that there were not so many opportunities to meet up and do the MTP.» (Too high)

- The Course PM should reflect how the course will play out, new things should not be added afterwards. This was removed which was good, many students have a lot going on besides this course which makes the ability to being able to plan early is really important.»

- Don"t let Anders have two sessions, he"s lectures sucks (anyone else could have summarized the essence of what he said down to 45minutes)»

- More assignments, maybe instead of the exam. This topic seems more relevant to test that way than in one 4 hour exam. I think you should do all the workshops mandatory. »
- Perhaps the first data-collection assignment could be a bit larger or at least with longer time. This time it all was done in a hurry.»

- Sverker Alänge contributes with really interesting insights!»
- Sverker has a way of speeking that leaves a lot between the lines, this is nice sometimes, but when you really want to know something specific or are in a hurry this can be anoying!»
- To me it feels like the course have a fresh and updated view on research methods which should definitely be maintained.»
- Need more practical assignments so that we read the book. But exam is not worthwhile in my opinion.»
- I really enjoyed studying this Course.»
