Yes, definitely»4 57%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»0 0%

- I think the examiner has been really generous with us phd students (or at least with me), I think I should have known more to fully deserve my pass. Maybe a "presentation-oriented" exam has to be extended by including one question about the course program, in order to force the student to dig a little bit better than I did in the course program before attending the exam.» (To some extent)
- My examination was a prepared talk based on literature which was not part of the course syllabus. The literature was chosen by me. An advantage of this method is that I can pick a topic relevant to my research. This helps me see how the course material relates to topics in my field. A disadvantage is that this method does not test or reflect much on the material in the course syllabus.» (To some extent)

Teaching and course administration

6. To what extent has the teaching been of help for your learning?

Great extent»3 42%

- The lecturer went through all the material in great detail. It was thus clear from the slides what was important in the course syllabus. However, in my opinion, the lecturer went into too much detail. Listening to the lecturer was like listening to a course book or research paper being read out loud. The lecturer thus spends too much effort on technicalities in proofs instead of mediating insight and intuition, and giving a clear overview. "Proof ideas", for instance, are usually sufficient. They help convince the crowd that a lemma or theorem is true.» (To some extent)
- Lectures were perfect, the extremely high competence of the instructor was absolutely evident» (Great extent)

7. To what extent has the course literature and other material been of help for your learning?

7 svarande

Small extent»0 0%
Some extent»2 28%
Large extent»2 28%
Great extent»3 42%

- There was only recommended reading. It would have been nice to get page numbers from certain literature sources in good time before the lectures so we can read and internalise the material behind the lecture, before attending the lecture.» (Some extent)
- large because there was - at least in my opinion - a certain gap between the outstanding material (slides with very useful comments) prepared by Reiner and the proposed literature in terms of clarity» (Large extent)
- Slides are very tight to the lectures, self contained, clear to read, just PERFECT I would say» (Great extent)

8. How well did the course administration, web page, handouts etc work?

Very badly»0 0%
Rather badly»0 0%
Rather well»1 14%
Very well»6 85%

- Slides (and exercises too) were always delivered on time before the lecture. For people like me that love to have the slides during the lectures in order to take notes that was just great.» (Very well)

Study climate

9. How were the opportunities for asking questions and getting help?

7 svarande

Very poor»0 0%
Rather poor»0 0%
Rather good»2 28%
Very good»5 71%
I did not seek help»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 3.71

- The reason for my answer is the instructor did not have time to go through the exercises we were supposed to do, and I think discussing few exercises with the instructor would improve the course quality. So I think more hours should be scheduled for this course » (Rather good)
- We could freely interrupt the lecturer with questions during lectures. We often had discussions during breaks. The lecturer was responsive by e-mail.» (Very good)

10. How well has cooperation between you and your fellow students worked?

7 svarande

Very poorly»0 0%
Rather poorly»0 0%
Rather well»0 0%
Very well»5 71%
I did not seek coopeation»2 28%

Genomsnitt: 4.28

- It was great in the beginning, then I did not manage to join the last round of our self-administred exercise sessions because of other activites I was busy with, but that was only my fault» (Very well)
- We formed a study group where we discussed and solved non-mandatory assignments, prepared for us by the lecturer.» (Very well)
- My bad. I had to postpone the exam for other duties that overlapped with (and had the priority over) the course » (I did not seek coopeation)

Summarizing questions

11. What is your general impression of the course?

7 svarande

Poor»0 0%
Fair»0 0%
Adequate»1 14%
Good»3 42%
Excellent»3 42%

- Great course topic. A well-administered course. More meta-data on lectures needed. Less technicalities in lectures, more intuition.» (Adequate)
- Topics are interesting and it is definitely possible to learn a lot in the course» (Good)
- An extended and deep enough overview on what - in my experience - is generally covered more superficially in other courses that make use of propositional and first order logic.» (Excellent)

12. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- most of the things, as it should be clear from my comments»
- *The lecture slides format. *The student discussion (which happened to be a student-driven initiative, though: could be included and suggested to students next year) *The multiple modalities of exam. »
- The non-mandatory assignments. Urging students to form 1 or more groups.»

13. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- In the lectures, the order of presentation is often from abstract to concrete. This should be reversed: examples should be presented before the general case.»
- "changed" is the wrong word, there are few bits here and there that maybe could be tweaked or discussed»
- *It would be useful to publish a list of topics of projects on the webpage.»
- Concrete literature behind each lecture (page X-Y of book/paper Z), listed on course website before each lecture. Spend more time on insight and intuition in lectures, and less time on proof technicalities.»
