- the home exam is very fuzzy and short. but when having such a large project it"s good that it is short at least, but perhaps some questions to answer could be good, at least if the goal is to know whether the students have actually read the literature. i suspect you could get away with just listening on the presentations during the seminars. » (To some extent)
- Seminars are taking too much of time during the course. It"ll be better If they"re integrated into the course in another way.» (To some extent)
- Examination? We have a project, several workshops, litterature studies and home exam. Which of these count towards my grade I do not know, because noone is willing to tell me, and they are all focused in different directions.» (No, not at all, To some extent)
- Too much seminars and examinations. Since we had project, written home exam could be excluded.» (To some extent)
- this course takes lots of time, especially the literature seminar part.» (Yes, definitely)
- The examinator was not present at all times during the presentations, there was no apperant mechanics for differentiating the grades within the projects.» (To some extent)
- The seminars took to much time from the project and honestly it didn"t give so much more than stress. I think that a discussion is enough. I would like to say that the teachers lectures and the guest lectures were really good. Specially the one with Mark from HITLabz about AR. Great of the teacher to make that seminar possible!» (To some extent) (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)

- More sensor types and more example projects would be better If added to the teaching part.» (Small extent)
- Litterature seminars were rather useless and took time that could be better spend on something else. On lectures held by examiner he was annoyed if we asked questions or questioned the projects he presented.» (Small extent)
- close to nothing, the handler have learnd me evrything.» (Small extent)
- it would be nice if people were allowed to ask questions during lectures, without the teacher getting annoyed. » (To some extent)
- Stricter guidance/teaching for the projects in order to make sure they are actually ubiquitous computing projects.» (To some extent)
- I really enjoyed M"s lectures and his enthusiasm for the subject. » (Large extent) (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)

- Literature were all almost 10 years old! Is it really relevant to only read that old literature in a course which is based in a modern technology??» (Small extent)
- have none.» (Small extent)
- Many of the papers we have read feel outdated and the rest at most tangentaly related to the projects.» (Small extent)
- the papers are all very old, and seem outdated. my feeling is that this is because the subject is a whole is getting old. a lot of the predictions made have not been realised even though the technology for it exist. also some of the papers never really reach any conclusions. » (Some extent)
- Having litterature seminars is a very nice idea, but not when it feels like they take away too much time from everything else, and when they are placed so that when I read the litterature i think "Oh, this would have been useful three weeks ago"» (Some extent)
- The first seminar was especially useful» (Large extent)
- The lecture series were great, although not all of the articles are of equal quality. Subpar academic readings can be useful, but can also be a bit confusing as well as we experienced in our group.» (Large extent)

- Often double and incorrect information online. Changes to schedule in last minute etc.» (Very badly)
- There were some issues with the examination at first, but that worked out rather well in the end» (Rather well)
- The scrolling text box on the course website is an example of very poor web design usability. By scrolling the text, it makes it hard to read and by scrolling the links it makes it hard to select. Think of the tracking size of the cursor on screen and then the hit target of a text link, which is not a whole unbroken object. Now, with it moving, it becomes exponentially harder to select it...in addition to attempting to read it. It should never, ever be used. One suggestion is to set up the class calendar as a subscription (e.g., Google Calendar) so we can use our own calendaring clients to subscribe and be notified of any changes. We had this in Physical Computing and it was a tremendous help.» (Rather well)

- Project was rather much work and we were not allowed to select groups ourselves. Ended up with people that had a hard time corporating and that made the project very stressful and not fun at all.» (Very poorly)
- Some in the group only spoke spanish. How did they get into Chalmers?» (Rather poorly)
- Group dynamics not really working out that well unfortunately.» (Rather poorly)
- Our group was a bit dysfunctional. The problem was one of unequal work-ethic (half of us wanted to do an interesting, difficult project while two others wanted to do an easy project so they would have more time to devote to their ISD program), competence, and language. While it is expected that ISD students will have a technical background, one ISD member in our group had no technical expertise at all and was not willing to invest the time to acquire any skills. Another had limited programming experience but, to his credit, stepped up and really contributed. We also had two group members who did not speak swedish or english particularly well, so it caused a lot of miscommunication problems. A suggestion is to not group too many students with little english and swedish ability together, although, this will likely be less of an issue after tuition fees are introduced next year for non-EU students. Another is to have some way for people to change groups if there is a clash or differing levels of ambition. As it was, we were grouped together without any opportunity to make a mid-course correction. » (Rather poorly)
- We have some communication problems since the international student in our group were really bad on english and misunderstood everything al the time and could"n help with the report.» (Rather well)
- It was ok the bigger part of the project, but one of the group members did not write anything in the report and left early from the exhibition to study at home so we had to clean up ourselves.» (Rather well)

- For a mandatory course it didn"t contribute much at all.» (Poor)
- Outdated and unmodern!» (Poor)
- The course seems focused on the interaction design students only.» (Poor)
- The project was meaningful, the litterature seminars should have been much earlier in the course, the home exam did not give very much, and mostly: the first two weeks felt like a waste of time.» (Adequate)
- I really enjoyed the course material and the lectures. Fascinating stuff!» (Excellent)

12. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- the project i guess, the literature would do well to be updated. »
- Project»
- Guest lectures»
- The project! Its really interesting and teaches you al lot of useful stuff, and it"s also very non-fluffy, unlike the rest of teh course.»
- The guest lectures and the project with the increadible support from the support teachers!»
- The project meetings with the course assistants and teacher.»
- Course supervisors and turors»
- the project»
- The project with exhibition and reports.»
- Seminars and home exam.»
- The workshops»
- guest lecture, studio work»
- Course assistants, project, exhibition»
- The tutor is very good »
- The lecture series is a great format. Many of the readings, but not all. The project format is great as well.»

13. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- all the pre-project presentations... so extremely boring and pointless to listen to all groups presenting five ideas, and then 2 ideas which are the same as some of the five... »
- More sensor types and more example projects would be better If added to the teaching part. Seminars are taking too much of time during the course. It"ll be better If they"re integrated into the course in another way.»
- Lecture seminars»
- Pick either workshops or litterature seminar and remove it. They are both very good ideas but currently they just distract and annoy students who want to get their project done. Do NOT keep this course mandatory for students that do not study ID. This really isn"t Intelligent Systems at all. Sorry.»
- The written thing about the lecture seminars. Seminars with presentation is enough.»
- It gives students time to write good paper if deadline of the written home exam should be at least one week later than project deadline. »
- The entire schedule. The finl report on the lecture seminars should be removed. Either have multiple presentations OR have a report on them. Doing both is just a waste of time.»
- Examiner and project structure. Projects were far too structured for the time spend.»
- the scheduling»
- Putting workshops in the middle of the project. And all the seminars as well. If anything, they should come before the start of the project.»
- The whole course should be finished before christmas. The seminars could be sooner in the course.»
- The theoretical basis on which the development of the projects could be based. It should include both, sociological, technological, psycological and cognitive prerspectives, which, though few are given untill some extend during the lecture seminar, some lectures and some literature on these topics should be included in order to make it more clear, and give more arguments for discussion. An excelent example of this was the first workshop, in which a context and a fundamental theory about social interaction was given and, as seen, many final projects were influenced by this workshop becouse there was a wider theorical basis from which discusse the real problem. »
- the literature seminar»
- the time of guest lecture and workshops could be start earlier»
- The head teather. evry thing exept the project.»
- Literature seminars should be moved to the first weeks of the course, to provide inspiration and interfere less with the project work.»
- Introduce peer reviews for grading and an opportunity to change groups if necessary. The fact that the entire group gets one grade seemed to encourage two of our members to not contribute much since they knew the rest of us were very motivated to do a good project. We attempted to address this through meetings, project planning, designing but nothing proved effective. I think if everyone knows their grade, in part, will be affected by their peers then it adds motivation to contribute and cooperate more. A lecture series on contemporary ubicomp products would be fantastic. It would be worthwhile to complement the often decade old articles with some current examples of the technology in the real world.»

14. Additional comments

- Had a another course except this course and all exams and deadlines were just 1-2 days apart from each other which was quite stressful.»
- I don"t want to sound negative, but in my opinion this course didn"t contribute with anything important. But you still hade to spend so much time on it, that no one had time for the other courses because Ubicomp just had too many different things to hand in each week.»
- Assign groups should be based on the abilities of students from different background.»
- The placing of the workshops needs to be fixed, felt kinda useless to have the last workshop when we were focused on the project, would have been better to have it earlier. The seminars were placed a bit weird and could have been spread more evenly.»
- Great class! Really worthwhile! This is an area that would be interesting to pursue professionally.»
