- I was alot like learning a new language, a lot of glossery. » (Positive)
- I find it strange to have a course about learning how to write your master thesis, when the rest of chalmers write it without this course.» (Negative)
Goals and goal fulfilmentThe course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course. More specifically the course goals were expressed as:
To provide knowledge of, and training in, methods and skills used in research and investigations.
To enable students to choose between alternative techniques to collect and process data and to evaluate the trustworthiness of research data and analyses.
To improve the students" ability to present research results.
At the end of the course the student should be able to prepare a brief for a research project and to evaluate and decide on methods for a master"s thesis.

I don´,t know/have not been examined yet» | | 3 | | 10% |
Genomsnitt: 1.82 - Yes, since there has been combined examinations. i.e. the written examination itself did not assessed it alone. » (Yes, definitely)
- Only the goal: To provide knowledge of, and training in, methods and skills used in research and investigations.
But the other goals have been testen during the MTP.» (To some extent)
- I would prefer kind of questions in which we could use the knowledge about research methodology, not just repeat what we have memorized two days before. for instance you could give a methodology of a research to us and ask for the mistakes in the strategy or design. I know that would be tougher for you and us, but it evaluate our knowledge in an analytical way » (To some extent)
- There were some detail questions, like steps of quantitative research.» (To some extent)
- its hard to estimate an understanding through written answers about general concepts.» (To some extent)
Learning6. To what extent has the teaching been of help for your learning?29 svarande

Large extent» | | 7 | | 24% |
Some extent» | | 9 | | 31% |
Small extent» | | 8 | | 27% |
I did not participate» | | 0 | | 0% |
Genomsnitt: 2.68 - it mostly repeated the topics mentioned in the book (which is probably the purpose) and thereby helped to strengthen the understanding and see what is important from the lecturer"s point of view. most lectures however (except the guest lectures) did not bring up new points» (Some extent)
- I did most of the learning through reading the book by Bryman and Bell. » (Some extent)
- Good teaching, but it still required alot of reading at home. The book is quite hard.» (Some extent)

I did not participate» | | 4 | | 14% |
Genomsnitt: 2.82 - extremely useful exercise! would be great to get a feedback faster and more detailed.» (Great extent)
- A part from it being stressful timewise, it was a good exersize. A good thing to improve for next year would be to cut back om the nuber of presentations. Anders could group us in four groups instead of 2. Becauce 4 hours of listening on the same thing on everybodys presenations was boring and not learning at all.» (Great extent)
- I already had knowledge in that area.» (Some extent)
- the timing of that assignment was awful!» (Some extent)
- it was a lot of slides and only some of them were touched upon, which made it rather confusing» (Small extent)
- The book was not to be found in cremona during that time, so doing that workshop was like a shot in the dark. » (Small extent)
10. To what extent did the proposal writing contribute to your learning?29 svarande
Great extent» | | 10 | | 34% |

- i think that it was a great!» (Great extent)
- I know what I should do/write next year if I have to write another proposal. » (Large extent)
- It was a great exercise in some aspects.» (Large extent)
- I think that it, to some extent, is just a assignement forced on the students at the wrong time. I would prefer nt to put so much focus on it. Make it a smaller assignemnt (expectations has to be set lower as well then)» (Some extent)
- may be its too early for that type of exercise. apparently it was better when the course was later in the program. now its difficult to write a good proposal without having some contacts with the industry and without searching for existing thesis requests.» (Some extent)

- I have missed some of the tutorials, however my group mate told me what was discussed during tutorials and we have written our proposal in that direction.» (Large extent)
- They didn"t provide us detail feedback. I would have preferred to discuss about details as well as general considerations. » (Large extent)
- we only signed up for one quite early into the MTP.» (Some extent)
- It was mostly guidance and not so much feedback, but it contributed to some extent on what is supposed to be in the proposal and also what a suitable project is.» (Some extent)
- Good with many opportunities» (Some extent)
- I felt that I could ask short questions in breaks to help develop the proposal but in general I think that tutoring contributes to a very large extent to learning. If you only get feedback after you handed in the proposal, you do not pay attention to them in the same way as you do if you get feedback in the middle of the process and before handing it in.» (I did not participate)

Genomsnitt: 3.37 - The comments from opposition and tutors was very useful. » (Great extent)
- I think a lot of the focus was put on the comments that group got from their tutoring and it differed a lot between the different groups. I do not think those comments are enough and I am missing more specific comments from supervisors.» (Some extent)
- not that contributing, would have wanted you to give feedback for the final hand in.» (Small extent)
- Mostly detailed comments like referencing and length of text, not so much constructive.» (Small extent)
- Very few comments...» (Small extent)

- The book is hard to read but it covers alot.» (Great extent)
- the course book has made up my knowledge about this book. and the article about systematic combining was also interesting. » (Large extent)
- I liked the book. » (Large extent)
- The book is very comprehensive which created a resistance to start reading. All chapters included did not feel important for us. Maybe more specific and maybe also more narrow reading instructions with page numbers should be provided.» (Some extent)

- Since I"m not doing my master thesis for another year I did not find it valuable. » (Small extent)
- especially the presentation by Volvo did not contain much focus on actual master thesis opportunities» (Small extent)
- As always a lot of commercial. The slides from Volvo for example was the fourth time I saw!» (Small extent)
- Could be earlier, i had to study» (I did not participate)

- If the preparing for the exam is included otherwise no extent. » (Great extent)
- Good exam!!
(I hope, havn"t seen the final grade yet though)» (Great extent)
- Maybe not the specific exam. But the studying in advance.» (Large extent)
- Ethical issues was repeated too much.» (Some extent)
- I had an opportunity to reflect on what i had learned, there was one question i forgott, i had studied for it but My memmorie was really bad after three hours of writing, well i know everything about systematic combining now, thats for sure... » (Some extent)
- It contributed in the way that my learning curve just before the exam was very steep. The exam per see did not contribute so much to my learning.» (Some extent)
- don"t know if it should contribute, but it reflected the course.» (Small extent)
- I have memorized almost 70 pages of summary that I have made out of the book. I will forget most of them a week later, only general ideas about business research will remain. » (Small extent)

Rather badly» | | 5 | | 17% |
Very badly» | | 1 | | 3% |
Genomsnitt: 1.89 - everything was clearly organized. thank you for that!» (Very well)
- Instructions on where to find the articles was not provided until a few days before the exam and they could not at that time be reached via chalmers lib (sciencedirect could not be reached at the time). » (Rather well)
- The information posted could have been presented in a more clear and structured way.» (Rather well)
- The presentations can be group under the folders with weeks names like week 2
» (Rather badly)
- Web page and hand outs. Good in general. But I believe that the administration could still have been handled in a better way. Was too short notice on a few things. "Write Research questions til tommorrows lecture for example" (when it was already 5 in the afternoon) To short notice I"d say. » (Rather badly)
- there were some problems with our group. it was not registered properly and no opposition was provided.» (Rather badly)
- Wrong emails and not updated continously. I saw alot of powerpoints that was uploaded just a couple of days before the exam. And that is too late for me.» (Rather badly)

Summarizing questions21. What should definitely be preserved to next year?- The quaestionnaire design and the MTP»
- Master thesis proposal, questionnaire design»
- The MTP.»
- the period of the course its in a perfect time for students to get an insight towards the real thesis.»
- Creating your own master thesis proposal helped us a lot! The observation excursive was good. The extra tutoring times were very appreciated! »
- MTP»
- assignments»
- think teacher :) book, woorkshops. most of it!»
- writing a master thesis proposal is very helpful. the administration of the course worked very well. »
- The interviewing session. »
- The MTP assignment.»
- The ability to ask question »
- Naster thesis proposal»
- The workshops are very useful so they shuld be preserved»
- questionaire»
22. What should definitely be changed to next year?- More exciting lectures»
- Book or at least more specific reading instructions»
- maybe the clashes with the six sigma course but then that is relative. since not all students took that course»
- Give us more time to do the questionnaire design report. »
- final exam can be more conceptual»
- the planning for the questionnair! dont bring it up two days befor holidays!»
- the first presentations about data collection method in the first week was unnecessary. some chapters in the book are very hard to read, especially the first two chapters. I admit they are useful but there should be an easier way. because there are a lot of chapters to focus on. »
- Since operations improvement and six sigma projects takes time and energy, the timing of the exam should be considered again. »
- The quantitative data collection task. Would be more interesting to gather data that had some meaning. »
- I think that it is a bit too much with 7,5 hp for something that most of us only will benefit on for the year that is left. The course could be smaller.»
- Sometimes Sverker spends too much time talking about his examples. As example is in the lecture in qualitative data analysis where we didn"t actually talk about or got to practise how you to analyze data. We only got some example of poor collected data and how you shouldn"t ask questions but no really practise in coding on a good piece of data. Because one questions in the exam asked about how you analyze qualitative data this feel as an unfair question since we didn"t practise this in a good way. »
- the lectures were not so structured and the relation between what the teacher was saying and the topic in question was not always clear.»
- The number of workshops can be increased»
- It should not be a compulary course and it should be put just after the summer holiday»
- The extent of the MTP. I think less focus could be put on that assignment but still the students will learn from it, Less expectations and lower percent of total examination.»
- attention to course administration»
23. Would you recommend that we include compulsory literature seminars next year? One suggestion that has been put forward is to include literature seminars in order to further stimulate all students to read the literature during the course - and not only just before the written exam. 29 svarande
Yes, definitely» | | 5 | | 17% |
Yes» | | 14 | | 48% |
No» | | 7 | | 24% |
Definitely not» | | 0 | | 0% |
I have no opinion» | | 3 | | 10% |
Genomsnitt: 2.37 - There was a resistance to open the book but when I did it was at least kind of interesting. » (Yes, definitely)
- It is such a good way of learning! to get into the subject early by being forced to read, and also to discuss the litterature with your fellow students is very good!» (Yes, definitely)
- Sure, not a bad idea. However, I percieved the book as rather bad - massive amounts of text with very little substance. Very typical of american course literature where the authors get paid per page.» (Yes)
- one, would be good so that you are forced to read an article and then have a discussion around it would be interesting and you learn a lot by discussing with others also.» (Yes)
- But in that case it has to be done at the same time as the workload decreases at some other point!!» (Yes)
- Good recomendation! I could have been usefull to discuss the chapters that were a bit difficult (for example number 16)» (Yes)
- dont think it is needed. it is a interesting subject!» (No)
- I think the students are old enough to decide themselves whether or not they read the literature. I personally found it very helpful, but it did take a lot of time. Besides, having compulsory literature seminars does not necessarily make the students read the literature» (No)
- for my behalf, attending to mandatory literature seminars puts an unnatural pressure on me. I should be free to read what I want when I want. » (No)
- It is not the best nor most appropriate way for all students to learn that way.» (No)
24. Additional comments- The part of the course that is preparations for master thesis is good but the course in general is not very appealing. Should it be elective?»
- Azadeh gave us really good feed-back on our master thesis proposal. She did a really goos job over all! »
- good course!»
- In the beginning Sverker said that the book is more read as a reference book, this indicated that we didn"t need to read before the lectures. Later he seemed disappointed that students had not read in the book before lectures. If Sverker want student to prepare questions, he should be clear about that from the beginning.
Moreover, Bo Bergmans lecture was very similar to the one he has had (several) times in Six Sigma. This could be stated on before hand and so that the six sigma -students can shoose to attend or not, alternatively he could talk about something else.
»
- I do not think it is acceptable what happend during the presentations on the Master thesis proposal. It was way to easy to realize in advance that there was not enough time for all the presentationt and oppositions. Since it was known before the lecture started, or at least in the beginning of the lecture, something could have been done right at the start. (e.g. 10 mins presentation 5 mins opposition) to solve the mistake already done. Now ut turned out really bad. I was dissapointed. Weird as well since it was graded.»
25. Would you recommend this course to other students?29 svarande
Yes, strongly» | | 11 | | 37% |
Yes» | | 14 | | 48% |
No» | | 4 | | 13% |
Definitely not» | | 0 | | 0% |
Genomsnitt: 1.75 - a opportunity to learn something that you will have use of in the master thesis project and probobaly in the future!» (Yes, strongly)
- it"s very good to get a structured approach to research and how to write reports, master theses etc.» (Yes, strongly)
- It"s an alright course. I"m not really sure I feel that it"s up on a master level and the contents could clearly be useful earlier in the education.» (Yes)
- I thought it was useful to prepare for the thesis work. » (Yes)
- Very good for writing your master thesis!» (Yes)
