Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

Genomsnitt: 2.33

- The goals were hard to understand. If I had known what the course were about, I probably would have choosen another course.» (The goals are difficult to understand)
- It says far to little about the need for knowledge about quantum- physics and mechanics!» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

6 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»0 0%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»2 33%
No, the goals are set too high»4 66%

Genomsnitt: 2.66

- No, the prerequisites are to high. It should be stated that you sould have background in quantum physics/mechanics/chemistry to take this course.» (No, the goals are set too high)
- The homework and the exam is way over the "basic" knowledge that one is supposed to reach after finishing the course. They also demand unrealistic knowledge about programing and mathematics (Schrödinger and Hamiltonians for example).» (No, the goals are set too high)

5. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

6 svarande

No, not at all»1 16%
To some extent»3 50%

Genomsnitt: 2.16

- It"s hard to remember something that the teacher said a couple weeks ago. The slides on the homepage is not so easy to read because that tey are not often explaining what going on in the pictures. Also, the quantities are almost nerver explained.» (Some extent)

8. How well did the course administration, web page, handouts etc work?

6 svarande

Very badly»2 33%
Rather badly»1 16%
Rather well»3 50%
Very well»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 2.16

- Were the news-section ever updated? Deadlines for compulsary home assigments, presentations and labs should be clearly announced on the homepage. (Not just hidden in some of the lecture slides)» (Very badly)
- The slides from lectures were really bad! They only contain some minor info and the rest is just said during the lecture. There is barely any reason to try and study them after the lectures. Besides they are like 700 of them so they are hard to get through at all.» (Very badly) (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)

- The teacher encourages students to ask questions duing lectures, but I get the feeling that they rather not answer to questions otherwise.» (Rather poor)
- When an assignment is supposed to take 15 minutes and you can"t make it after trying for 5 hours the lecturer should get a reality check! Even if it"s simple for him it might be really hard for us. If you come and ask questions and get answers like "what is it that you don"t understand?", "I have said that on the lecture" and in whole meet a rather degrading attitude, that person should change approach to helping students!» (Rather poor) (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)

- We tried to do the assignments, but when we could not complete it and received no help from the teacher we decided that there was no point to try to finish it. » (Rather poorly)
- We all pretty soon together realized that there was no point trying to do the homework. A lot of us also decided to skip the exam in whole. I think we were 18 students starting and 5(!) taking the exam! That says it all in my opinion.» (Very well)

6 svarande

more practice, less lectures»3 50%
less practice, more lectures»3 50%
it is fine right now»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 1.5

- Practice as in making sure everyone has adequate knowledge of quantum mechanics (i.e. non-mandatory exercises on basics)» (more practice, less lectures)
- The practical exercises were really bad. There were insufficient instructions and the teacher was unwilling to help when we didnt understand what was asked in the assigment. » (less practice, more lectures)

Teacher-specific questions:

The course is divided in several parts covered by several teachers. Briefly explain

A. the strong part (which should be encouraged) and
B. the weak part (which should be improved)

of each lecturer and especially the topic he/she is lecturing on

15. Mats Andersson - A. the strong part

- I thought his only lecture were one of the better. »
- good lecturer»

16. Mats Andersson - B. the weak part

- only one lecture»

17. Thorvald Andersson - A. the strong part

- Laidback guy with a relaxed attitude.»

18. Thorvald Andersson - B. the weak part

- Too many slides, the graphs and figures should be more explained. »

19. Andrey Danilov - A. the strong part

- Pretty good symbolics in the lectures with good figures.»

20. Andrey Danilov - B. the weak part

- Too many slides, the graphs and figures should be more explained. »
- You assume we know things like QM and programming, apparently we don"t. »
- Get down to the students level and try to make the assignments reasonable! If it is about molcular electronics the main part of the task shouldn"t be programming MatLab. Also, try to be more helpful when asked and not just waving it of like silly questions.»

21. Sebastian deGraph - A. the strong part

- He were helpful in the first lab. Did not have any contact after that.»
- Well done. On the students level.»

22. Sebastian deGraph - B. the weak part

23. Janusz Kanski - A. the strong part

- He had some decent slides in the handouts.»

24. Janusz Kanski - B. the weak part

- I honestly cant say that I rememder any of the lecture.»
- Your ppts need text.»

25. Sergey Kubatkin - A. the strong part

- Relaxed and sometimes funny»

26. Sergey Kubatkin - B. the weak part

- It would be better if there were some explenations of the figures in the slides. It"s hard to remeber something that was said some weeks ago when it"s not explained elswere.»
- A bit stuttering English sometimes I"m afraid. Maybe works better if the lectures are planned more detailed. Also, a lot more of the things said on the lectures could be noted in the slides.»

27. Tomas Löfwander - A. the strong part

- Good in general»

28. Tomas Löfwander - B. the weak part

- The derivations done by hand were pretty boring to sit through. If the sloppy handouts were done neater, it would do the job instead. Tomas presumes that everybody knows all of the quantitys in the course, but I don"t that the students does.»
- Remake the QT ppts. on lectures you introduce tools through the examples, maybe state which tool for which example in the beginning of the examples so we know what to look for.»
- The calculations on the whiteboard for two lectures was way to much! Very little explanation and to fast progress. Have to show more attention to that the basics are clear.»

Summarizing questions

29. What is your general impression of the course?

Adequate»1 16%
Good»1 16%
Excellent»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 2

- I found no interest in the course. I will probably take another course instead of try to take this one again. If I have had som better preknowladge about the subject it could have been different.» (Poor)
- The worst course I"ve taken so far. Completely unreasonable demands on knowledge about quantum- physics and mechanics (not noted in the course demands!). » (Poor)
- Who is the course actually held for? All teachers assume that the students know the teacher"s field well, but this is not a conference, assume we know nothing.» (Good)

30. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- Exercises.»
- First computer lab and literature study»

31. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Exam. There are many lecturers, emphasizing on different points - the content is very broad. It is difficult to memorize all the different parts. Thus, allowing standard A4 sheet with notes would be helpful, while the difficulty of exam can be increased to really test student"s understanding.»
- The compulsary assigmentswere a mess. I did"t know exactly what the content they consisted of or when the time for deadlines were. Too many slides inte the lectures (731 slides in 18 documents). The figures and graphs in the slides sould be more explained. »
- Less mandatory stuff, a course with this workload should not require an exam at the end.»
- The homework assignments!!!»

32. Additional comments?

- What did Sergey mean with the phrase: "The exam were fixed a half year ago"? »
- Not sure I will even try to write the exam some other time, not worth the effort. Would be interesting to see what this evaluation showed last year and if any of the complaints were fixed...»

33. What is your main previous study background?

Other - please specify in comment box.
