- Most the goals are reasonable but at the biotechnology programme we have not written computer programmes scince we were in 1:st grade. This made some of the exercises hard to follow. There are also as said above hard to understand from the slides what is important in the course and not. » (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)

- The lectures have in almost all cases been extremely chaotic, with more than 130 slides in some lectures, it has not been possible to understand and look at the slide, write comments and listen before the teacher 10 slides further. Fewer slides with more careful explanations would improve the learning, and also more text on each slide, a picture does not say so much afterwards if you have not had time to take notes during the lectures. » (Some extent)

- can"t understand the book. the slide use for studying doesn"t contain much detail (explanations) as most of them are graphs which make it quiet difficult to learn or even understand.» (Small extent)
- Campbell"s book is totally about different things and contains only very small ammount of needed info. Another book is to hard for understanding for people with biological background, it contains only technical stuff like equations and graphs without appropriate explanation» (Small extent)

8. How good were the lectures by the different teachers?

Jens Nielsen had the following lectures: Introduction, transcriptomics, metabolomics & proteomics, metabolic networks, regulation and medical & industrial systems biology.

Wanwipa Vongsagnak had lectures about genomics and integrated data analysis.

Intawat Nookaew had a lecture about linear programming.

Marija Cvijovic had a lecture about dynamic modelling.

Sergio Bordel Velasco had lectures about topology, EFM and thermodynamics.


- Sergio"s lectures gets a bit too mathematical, losing the connection with biology.»
- Jens: Good speaker but had far too many slides on his lectures. There was trouble to find the important parts of the lecture among all the slides. Narrow it down and think about what you want the students to remember when the lecture is over and talk about that. Wanwipa: seems nervous when she lecture. Had trouble to understand what she was saying. Intawat: Moved slowly forward so I could understand. Pointed out the important parts of the lecture. Marija: Did not put up her lecture notes on the homepage before the lecture which made the lecture hard to follow. Sergio: I only attended 1 of his lectures but in that one I did not understand very much.»
- Jens uses too many slides. Less slides would be prefered and talk more about each slide. Also godd to have some more text that explains all diagrams. »
- Jens : You have to cut of much of the material in your PPT. Looking at a PPT which is 120 slides are just confusing. Sergio: Have to clearify more about what he is talking about, and why Topology is important.»
- Intawat treated us as if we were stupid both at the lecture and in the exercise. We´,re all adults, not children. I was so angry when I left. I did not have enough background knowledge for sergios lecture.»

- Jens is generally a very good teacher, but he needs to manage his time a bit better, it would probably be a good idea to shorten some of the lectures and focus on some parts in more detail. »
- It was difficult to understand what was important to learn. It would have been easier with somewhat less slides, they were way too many! Especially on Jens lectures since he just passed a lot of them without comments anyway. Also good to think of when adding figures etc is to have them large enough, many times the figures were too small too be seen and some more explanation would have been good for tables and graphs. »
- It"s not the lecturers themselfs but rather the content of the lecture that I don"t like. It would be nice with a more clear learning outcome and lectures that focus on more confined parts.»

- The concept with learning objectives for each lecture is good, but narrow the objectives down. Nobody gets encurraged by an objective like "Describe the concepts of proteome analysis". That would include the whole proteomics lecture right?» (Some extent)

- I learned some things when you finally had understood the exercise, but most of the exercises it just took me the first half of the time to understand what to do. I think I had too little background knowledge to be able to apply my knowledges on the exercises.» (Rather poor)
- The questions you handed in to Tobias were good but the programming part didn"t give me anything. I had no clue what I was doing or why in MATLAB and other similar programs. » (Rather poor)
- There were some computer exercises that were well coordinated (Marija"s exercise was very good) but overall the quality was not very good. Poorly phrased or at some times complete lack of instructions made it very hard to complete the exercises without help. Either improve instructions or improve the amount of teachers/student. I am generally not a fan of "recipe exercises", I like to figure some out by my own, but some exercises were extremely hard to follow.» (Rather poor)
- The idea of exercises is good, I did still learn from them, but it was too much trouble with the computers for really having time to focus on the real ecercise. I think it would be better to work on ordinary Windows-computers. It would also be good to be given ready made matlab programs where we just have to change small parts. This was sometimes done after a while, which was a plus! » (Rather poor)
- Tobias is very helpful and gives good explanations when there is something I don"t understand. The computers are extremely slow which makes the exercises rather long. It is boring to have to wait 15 minutes to download the files of the exercise. At least I am not used to work with Linux, so that is also a difficulty.» (Rather good)

- I and my studymate tried to figure most of it out on our own. The help we got was more on the level of understanding the actual exercise than any programming issues.» (OK help)

- Tobias has always been helpful when I have questions. Most of the teachers in the lecures has so many slides that they skip a large amount of them to finish in time. Therefore there has been no time for questions in the lectures.» (Rather good)

- Personally I thought it was rather low, but I"m a quick writer so the reports weren"t that time consuming for me. In the end it was rather good as I took another course with a heavy work load.» (Low)

17. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Some lectures get very mathematical, and too much material is squeezed into too little time, making the opportunities for really understanding smaller. Please, rethink the lectures, or allow more time for them in the future.»
- More focus on the things the students are ought to learn in the lectures, eg. not so many slides/lecture. As it is now there is really hard to understand what to focus on.»
- Nothing should definitely be changed, but can change a textbook which can easier to follow if possible.»
- The computer room, there are some rooms such as KD in Kemi building which is much better for both teacher and students. There is a computer in front that link to the projector,then it might be easier for the teacher to explain the excercise.»

- It has been very interesting, as a biologist, to get some insights into the engineering perspective on biology. Even though my favourite subject of research might not be optimising fluxes in yeast, I have really enjoyed seeing the possibilities of metabolic engineering!»
- This questionnaire should be given to the students after the exam. It was unfair that the students were not able to get an example of the exam this year of the reason that this is a new course (it is not actually our fault). Tell in advance what kind of exam it is, because depending on which kind of exam it is, you organize the technique of studying in different ways. Having this information W1 would be much better than getting it W7.»
- This course is really useful. It update my view of system biology.It is really good to know the different modeling, and know how to use it.»
- the exercise part was much more like cooking,I think you should obligate to writing codes by students even then you have you made them easier!or you can define project for exercise part then every body can be more deep in part that are more interested,finally we will not use whole of the systems biology! I know for this course it is difficult for satisfy everybody.»

- Although the goals are good understandable, but they are not achieved. At the end of the course students can"t definitely say what they"ve learnt and to make a reasonable conclusion about obtained knowledge. Lectures are too frustrating and contain lots of information that is skipped during the discussion. It"d be better to use less slides but to explain more what exactly those slides show. Labs are also not perfect. There"s a list of instructions given but no explanation why and what for we should use this code and how exactly it"ll help us in understanding of systems biology.»
- It would be better to have an extra projects because we can learn more by working on different projects .Also it would be better to consider some extra points for these kind of projects because it makes students happy and more active to gain point and learn more!! »
- Showing films for some lectures such as microarrays and transcriptomics is benefitial.»
