Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

6. How understandable are the course goals?

23 svarande

I have not seen/read the goals»3 13%
The goals are difficult to understand»0 0%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»8 34%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»12 52%

Genomsnitt: 3.26

- The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn, but the with the project it does not really say how to start ot what to do in the beginning. I look at it this way, either the project started too early, before we had acquired any knowledge at all about what it was about, OR, the project could start early, but with more preparatory information. » (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)

7. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

- Could be a little more prepared, good overall.» (Good)

16. What is your opinion about having a discussion-lecture concerning Sustainability in this course in experimental design

- Very good, it makes you think about what our responsibility are.»
- Good, as an optional choice!»
- Good idea, a good opportunity to learn things that might seem a little unclear»
- No connection to the project.»
- interesting to see things from others view»
- That was interesting and I learned some, but it felt that it was just about to get the "right" opinions from the students. More discussion about different opinions!»
- Didn"t really add anything of substance for me, but I suppose it"s a greater deal of the master program than our program.»
- Always good - And nicely "positioned"»
- Interesting»
- One lecture is good but not more.»
- why? could work... but it doesn´,t seem to do anything with the course...»
- ok»
- Not really interesting for the biotechnology students.»
- The disadvantage of just put in a single lecture about the environment is that the object seems to be "it is important to think about the sustainability" and then the time is running out and nothing new has been stated. The questions during the lectures were really traditional and I didn"t think that they opened up our minds for new-thinking... Maybe this lecture could have been an additional demo-lecture instead, since it was a litte bit too poor of time for them and we already know that the future need engineers with sustainability-thinking.»
- It seems to have more importance for the Master Students than for the Biotechnology Students.»

- Good thought, but can be hard to understand at times.» (Fair)
- Jan need to improve his English and he also need to cover the material faster. He has not finished what he was supposed to do a single time» (Fair)
- Quite slow tutorials. For example it is not necessary to explicitly calculate sums of squares each time, just write the results down when everyone should have a grip of a basic sum of squares.» (Fair)
- It was sometimes hard to understand what the question was and the answers were not very good» (Adequate)
- They helped me learn, but Jan Rodmar could help with some english lessions to improve understandning among students. But the teaching itself was very good!» (Good)
- if you mean the project» (Good)
- Jan Rodmars english could improve but other than that he managed to convey the important aspects of the problems. If you listened carefully that is.» (Good)
- J Rodmar has a great knowledge in experimental design, but unfortunately his poor English is a disadvantage for the teaching. It works quite well since he"s almost writing down everything he"s saying, but when it comes to spontaneous questions there have been some problems. » (Good)
- The exercises were good, but it would have been nice to have a key from the beginning.» (Good)

- Could have been a little more focus on litterature to compare with -find tips...» (Good)
- Gave some inisght into experimental time but was to extensive time wise.» (Good)
- It would have been better though, to start later on in the course with the project, because at the beginning no one had a clue what to do. Besides it needs to be more assistans there to help, because everybody needed help in the beginning.» (Good)
- I would like to write excellent, because it was really one of the best things during my whole education at Chalmers. I really enjoy the working method of problem-based learning. I hope you will have the resources to offer more teachers for the project in the future, since it was hard to get quick response to ones questions.» (Good)
- A great project to learn expereimental design» (Excellent)
- Justin, great teacher and big heart, very good lectures, very giving!» (Excellent)

22. What do you think about the optimization project?

- It"s great that you don"t know what to do in the beginning and that you learn about it in lectures during the experiments procedure. Smetimes the lectures were a bit "after" the experiment in time. The time for help was to little and another teacher would have helped.»
- A good project!»
- Fun project, too little info about what to do... everything I did was either by asking friends or going to Jan Rodmars office. Better tutorials at scheduled time should be held.»
- It is good, but more teachers per studnet would have been better. I know it is supposed to be PBL but you must be able to get some help at least at the studio exercises. A good thing was that you could walk down to Justin o Jan and ask questions whenever the were there.»
- made a lot of unnecessary misstakes because of the early start in the course»
- Very good, I rellay learned a lot. But too many students per supervisor....»
- Difficult at first, but definitely a great input in the course and a good source of knowledge.»
- Nize.»
- Too few teachers during the computer lessons. Too long waiting before getting help with questions.»
- se above»
- It is good but it should have started later on in the course and more teachers on fewer student. I learned pretty much but only during the other half of the project and the majority of the lesson time was spended on waiting for the teacher.»
- A lot of fun! but the first lesson should be at week 2, when we have a chance to calculate some problems. so that we can understand what we are dealing with»
- See answer question 21.»
- At first it was really hard and it just took a lot of time and it didn"t feel like a leard anything. But now when I do calculations I realize I have actually learned a lot. »
- It was very good, but the information from the start could have been better»
- Good way to learn and interesting»
- see question 21»
- Things that was necessary to use was learnt during lectures a few weeks later, which made it harder doing the project, but maybe that was a part of the learning process.»
- It was exciting and I learned a lot. »

32. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- The project, but it should be changed, and most of the topics included.»
- Opt. project»
- The project - but with better info from the start»
- the project as whole»
- The exercises and the amount of lectures.»

33. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- More opertunity for help, especially during the project sessions. Better answers to the handed out exercises.»
- The project groups, should be parted, so that the Master students have Justin, which speaks good english, and that Jan has the biotechnologists, and speaks swedish. which will be better for both parts.»
- More teachers at the project tiume.»
- the powerpoint presentations»
- Don"t print all hand-outs/power point. The text becomes very tiny and hard to read. But especially for sustainable reasons you should decrease the paper use..»
- More teachers to help students during the optimization classes. Jesutin did the best he could but there were simply too many questions for him to be able to help everyone. The concept of the project is that we"re not supposed to know what it"s all about at first, so naturally there will be a lot of confusion especially the first 2-3 classes.»
- övningstimmarna med Jan Rodmar. Och att man ska få ut föreläsningsanteckningarna innan (på nätet)!»
- Jan»
- Cover all areas, we didn´,t talk much about robust design and "extra sum of squares".»
- The project should start later. The lectures and should cover more ofwhat is tested in the exam.»
- Svanstrom sem. »
- It is hard to hear what Rodmar is saying..»
- The "swenglish"»
- more teachers to the project so it can work as well as wanted»
- Give a better key to the problems, from the beginning. More teachers that can help the students with the project, because it"s not reasonable to wait 3 hours for help during a 4 hours-lecture.»

34. Additional comments

- Would be good with some consultation time. Not good that the exam includet topics we didn"t went through in the course. »
- The time for the MVDA exam was much too short.»
