- Its the average of first & last period. I did more in 5-8 weeks.» (Around 30 hours/week)
- too much projects to do and too much articles to read, no good for going deeper in each project and those articles » (Around 30 hours/week)
- It was about 8 hours a day at least, including the group work, so that is already 5x8=40 hours a week. And then also maybe around 3 hours studying/reading the literature in the weekend to prepare for the next week.» (At least 35 hours/week)
- More precisely: 40,9 h/w. Yes, I do keep count.» (At least 35 hours/week)
- some times more that 35 hours group assignment plus discussion, individual assignment at home even there is no time to read all the literatures, cases and other materials and we get difficulty in answering the assignments and please give more time for reading and the work load have to minimize as possible other wise i personally satified » (At least 35 hours/week)
- I would say about 45-50 hours /week.» (At least 35 hours/week)

- At least!!!
We all spent a lot of time which probably affected the result on the first exam. » (At least 35 hours/week)
- i felt that i consumed more time in getting bookish knowledge, without practical examples, due to which i am still unclear about certain concepts. » (At least 35 hours/week)
- I must be more than 35, because there were too much materials, and too many team works. during the pevious quarter i spent all of my time on studing, doing team works, and attending in the classes.» (At least 35 hours/week)
- took me a long time to read and understand the articles/books. But english is getting better day by day... :-)» (At least 35 hours/week)

- But I would have attended about 100% if I"d not been ill.» (75%)
- almost i attend class except in some occassions and if possible try to revise the schedule we have every day class which is some times boring instead the program should be monday to wednsday and friday for presentations and class discussion » (75%)
- around90%» (75%)

- partly the content of the lessons wasn t relevant for the exams! (lars trygg)» (100%)
- Almost everything was mandatory so I did not have much choise. My high grade of attendance does not mean that I found the teaching very useful for my learning.» (100%)
- I attended 100%, but sometimes i felt bored by long lectures without any practical interesting example.» (100%)
- missed only one friday» (100%)
Goals and goal fulfilmentThe course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.3. How understandable are the course goals?33 svarande
I have not seen/read the goals» | | 6 | | 18% |
The goals are difficult to understand» | | 2 | | 6% |
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer» | | 17 | | 51% |
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn» | | 8 | | 24% |
Genomsnitt: 2.81 - I might at some point read the goals but i can not remember them right now. They have not been discussed frequently in class as far as i know» (I have not seen/read the goals)
- Although the first semester is aiming to provide us a general view of the whole program, I think there are too many contents included...at least I found many interrelations and some overlap between the courses, then I think we should refine the courses contents to make a clearer image of the program.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)
- If i got more working experiences, i could better understand the goals of it.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)
4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.27 svarande
No, the goals are set too low» | | 6 | | 22% |
Yes, the goals seem reasonable» | | 18 | | 66% |
No, the goals are set too high» | | 3 | | 11% |
Genomsnitt: 1.88 - I think Chalmers in general should strive for higher standards» (No, the goals are set too low)
- I hope i could get some » (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- My personal coordinater recommended me the QOM program after I heard it was not possible as an Erasmus student from Delft to participate in the MEI program. I think the goals are descriped well, but quite high if you don"t have that much background from your Bachelors. I have my Industrial Desing Engineering Bachelor degree and I almost everything in this course was new to me, also a lot of terms/methodologies that were like basics to Industrial Engineering students. Therefore I had to put a lot of time and effort in this course, but I learned really a lot from several field in the area of Quality and Operations Management.» (No, the goals are set too high)
5. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?29 svarande
No, not at all» | | 4 | | 13% |
To some extent» | | 20 | | 68% |
Yes, definitely» | | 2 | | 6% |
I don"t know/have not been examined yet» | | 3 | | 10% |
Genomsnitt: 2.13 - If you had a good memory, you would achieve a good score otherwise you barely pass.
Unfortunately the emphasis of exams was to memorizing the points!» (No, not at all)
- I think the second (final) exam assessed the goals better than the midterm exam.» (To some extent)
- i really liked some of the questions in the exams, for the fact that they were very usefull to test the students" understanding of the topics been covered. but on the other hand, some questions were detailed, and only tested the ability for the student to memorize, which i"m sure that it is not an aim for us when studing engineering, because when facing the real life experince, i can always refer to the book to get the needed details (like counting points or so) but, the think that will help me, is my general understanding of the ideas i have learned, and where to get the information i need.» (To some extent)
- I think the best way to evaluate the outcome of the first semester is project work, rather than a writter-exam, although to some extent it could reveal my perception of the knowledge.» (To some extent)
- The questions on the exams were to narrow and sometimes a bit strange, hard to understand. » (To some extent)
- not exactly. Mostly the examination was to reproduce the memory, which we had, execpt few questions.» (To some extent)
- the final exam seems fair but i don"t for the mid it may be our weakness but the material to be read is much more than week 5-8» (Yes, definitely)
- It was hard to prepare for the first examen - time, teachers main focus, workload...» (Yes, definitely)
- Like previously noted o dont remember the goals. The examenation reflected what i percieved as valuable in the course some what, but far from perfect.» (I don"t know/have not been examined yet)
Teaching and course administration6. To what extent has the teaching been of help for your learning?33 svarande
Small extent» | | 2 | | 6% |
Some extent» | | 13 | | 39% |
Large extent» | | 17 | | 51% |
Great extent» | | 1 | | 3% |
Genomsnitt: 2.51 - The teaching varies a lot because we had 4 different professors and each of them has a different technique and in my opinion some of their techniques are not adequate. Better time-management for presentations and literature presentation» (Some extent)
- Some weeks were really good teaching, others not at all.» (Some extent)
- Some teachers better then others» (Some extent)
- It differs from teacher to teacher. Sverker was a kind of great.» (Some extent)
- The practicing of methods in courses was good, the reading of the lecture slides not.» (Some extent)
- At some occassions, i felt that teacher was giving some value, otherwise, by reading course material ony, i felt rather better. Moreover, teacher can be a good communicator, but here one of the teacher perhaps has very excellent knowledge, but the way of communication is not good, due to which i felt bored.» (Some extent)
- It requires a lot of cooperations with team members in this class, we share much experience with each other but what teacher taught was a little theoretic.» (Some extent)
- The course has had some great moments, especially the litteratur seminaries. » (Large extent)
- I find most of the lectures useful & interesting.» (Large extent)
- Literature seminars are excellent! Could learn much more than only by reading the articles.
Go on with that!!» (Large extent)
7. To what extent has the the course literature and other material been of help for your learning?33 svarande
Small extent» | | 1 | | 3% |
Some extent» | | 6 | | 18% |
Large extent» | | 22 | | 66% |
Great extent» | | 4 | | 12% |
Genomsnitt: 2.87 - Even some articles might not be interesting or that related to the main subject» (Large extent)
- The content of the articles where good and the books also.» (Large extent)
- If I read it. Some literature in several weeks was just too many.» (Large extent)
- Mainly the lecture slides were good guidelines to prepare the exam» (Large extent)
- The material was good but sometimes lacked some of the points that I think the teachers saw as key points.» (Large extent)
- Course literature was very good, but i think its not a good idea to follow a book. Instead, if teachers follow a topic and defines its scope, then students have time to read out other books in order to explore the material. » (Large extent)
- These materials are of great help to me.» (Large extent)
8. How well did the course administration, web page, handouts etc work?33 svarande
Very badly» | | 4 | | 12% |
Rather badly» | | 1 | | 3% |
Rather well» | | 18 | | 54% |
Very well» | | 10 | | 30% |
Genomsnitt: 3.03 - File uploading was not clear in the beginning. Feedback only to the person who uploads the file. Personal uploading should be changed for team uploading. It seems there is no communication between the department and teachers (they don"t know about other activities/grades/methods). Printed handouts should be available also on electronic format» (Very badly)
- Some weeks were sorted under week, rather than not sorted at all. Nothing more about administration was very good at all.» (Very badly)
- The only one who i was able to communicate with was Cagdas and i contacted several others during the course with issues and never got a reply. Worst service i have ever experienced in a university.» (Very badly)
- It differed very much from week to week.» (Rather badly)
- Exapt that we still haven"t got the result of most of our cases. » (Rather well)
- Haven"t found my grade for the Conjoint analysis yet!!!» (Rather well)
- I suggest that all the material on course web page should be under headings like week 1, week 2, week 3 -----» (Rather well)
- Grades could be posted earlier. It seems to be a lack of communication in the department. Teacher told us that they already graded everything but it took still several days to get our results. » (Rather well)
- It"s pretty good, I can clearly get the information.» (Rather well)
- Some handouts and slides could be given earlier.» (Very well)
Study climate9. How were the opportunities for asking questions and getting help?33 svarande
Very poor» | | 0 | | 0% |
Rather poor» | | 2 | | 6% |
Rather good» | | 8 | | 24% |
Very good» | | 17 | | 51% |
I did not seek help» | | 6 | | 18% |
Genomsnitt: 3.81 - Since everybodies look like they are quite busy, personally I dont have much opportunities» (Rather poor)
- Although teachers might respond better to e-mail requests!!!!!» (Rather good)
- There was a nice openness to questions.» (Very good)
- Very personal environment. I like this! » (Very good)
10. How well has cooperation between you and your fellow students worked?33 svarande
Very poorly» | | 0 | | 0% |
Rather poorly» | | 4 | | 12% |
Rather well» | | 20 | | 60% |
Very well» | | 9 | | 27% |
I did not seek cooperation» | | 0 | | 0% |
Genomsnitt: 3.15 - There were a lot of difficulties within the groups.» (Rather poorly)
- Quite well and we like each other.» (Rather poorly)
- Cross cultural cooperation is always hard and a process. But it has been rewarding and worked out fairly well» (Rather well)
- The group work was not easy, but I set up a little learning group for the last examination. » (Rather well)
- One of our group"s member didnt work at all!» (Rather well)
- The cooperation was very well, but i think there should be the leader a every group in order to have more focus and final decision. » (Very well)
11. How was the course workload?33 svarande
Too low» | | 0 | | 0% |
Low» | | 1 | | 3% |
Adequate» | | 6 | | 18% |
High» | | 9 | | 27% |
Too high» | | 17 | | 51% |
Genomsnitt: 4.27 - The content was way too easy and unchallenging but the quantity was too large. Some of the exercises didn"t feel like they were designed for the level of study that we should have. Also: shouldn"t the exercises be about practiciing theory and not just common sense? I felt that I could have used made some of the exercises in grade school with good results.
Prof. Bergman"s exercises were exceptions as they required some thinking although clearer instructions would have been desirable.» (Low)
- The work load has been higher then the average of previous courses i have taken. However it is far from too high.» (Adequate)
- Not because of the total amount of hours but the compression of them to tuesday (got info on monday)-friday(presentation of groupwork). Couldn´,t do any work on the weekends or before first lesson of the week. The high amount of performance. Each day almost I had to perform in a field of knowledge that I was learning at the moment and show result. The combination of 1-2 gruopassignements + litteratureseminar + presentation + reading for exam + mandatory classes+ sometimes small tests on fridays in one week was too much for me. » (Too high)
- The amount of literature and group work was too much, which prevented me from being able to read the necessary literature in the assigned week.» (Too high)
- It was a really hard first quarter. I dont wanna say that it is impossible to do, but you should not go on like this. Bad grades as a result of too less time to prepare a examination demotivate the students extremly! » (Too high)
12. How was the total workload this study period?33 svarande
Too low» | | 1 | | 3% |
Low» | | 0 | | 0% |
Adequate» | | 4 | | 12% |
High» | | 13 | | 39% |
Too high» | | 15 | | 45% |
Genomsnitt: 4.24 - Same as in question 11.» (Adequate)
- Because of Projects and assignments which were clogging too much.» (High)
- Some times we put a lot efforts to the teamwork and with low effeciency.» (High)
- 130 - 150 pages per book, 2*15 pages per article, presentations on wednesdays, 20 pages and casestudys for friday, preparing for mid term examination on saturday and sunday!!!» (Too high)
- see previous question» (Too high)
Summarizing questions13. What is your general impression of the course?33 svarande
Poor» | | 2 | | 6% |
Fair» | | 5 | | 15% |
Adequate» | | 12 | | 36% |
Good» | | 11 | | 33% |
Excellent» | | 3 | | 9% |
Genomsnitt: 3.24 - The content and aims are great, but the execution is rather weak. I"m a little discontent about the lack of respect my peers had to the teachers and the other students. The general disorder when someone asked a question begged for disciplinary actions but none are given.
Also the exercises lack connection to the theory which is bad.» (Fair)
- Because of the administration, the guidelines, the coordination, the workload, the lack of help and staff listening to our opinions about the course. I would not recommend the course to other students.» (Fair)
- The course has given me some valuble experinces.» (Good)
- There are some other courses, which i want to undertake, but due to the tough schedule, i cant take any extra course. Specially the course of statistical quality control, very much linked to this course,is very important and interesting. But it always overlapp with other compulsory courses we have.» (Good)
14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?- Visits and presentations outside Chalmers»
- The exercises we did, for example with the KJ-method in week 7. It felt really good to do some exercises/practical things despite all the reading. And it is a good way of learning I think.»
- The intro, "social", week was good. But should have been spread for a longer time maybe. Too much right in start. Was a little bit frustrating.»
- Group work»
- To hard for me to say»
- the first week with the social activities were very great to know each other»
- The seminars were good. I especially enjoyed the seminars with prof Par Ahlstrom.
The selection of the articles were good overall. The strategy week and the change management week had excellent articles. But the product development week and service operations week had weak articles.
The book by prof Bergman is excellent as well.»
- Think it through before ...»
- Not having so many cases to work on beacuse we didn"t have time to make them good or study to the exame. I think it"s better to have maybe to big cases instead. Another thing is the mandatory classes. I think that it"s important to let students study in the way that fitts them. »
- The group work»
- the work load should be realistic»
- the structure of the weeks was very good, in terms of being introduced to a concept, and then apply this concept in the group assignments.»
- Literature Seminars»
- a) the maintenance and update of student portal page.
b) interesting articles as part of the learning material, eg. Sverker"s
c) the exam questions by Sverker has been the most interesting and very helpful in understanding the course. we"ll need more questions as those in order to understand the course better, and not just memorise literature for exams.
d) flexibility of lecture hours (limited hours per day)
e) one group work title per week
f) one literature seminar per week
»
- I think the most improtant thing is the student to choose his/her orientation in this program,in which field to go further, then I think it"s good for student to strengthen on the subject.»
- seminar litteratures»
- The mixture of all the subjects in the course.»
- 1) i have heard that the some studebt are complainig about the work load, but i think that all management courses have hight work load, so it seems not to be a big problem.
2)Literature seminars
3)Mini Projects
4)Presentations»
- this course was a very quick glance with a lot work, and materials. for the next year it could be with more ditails and to some extent less material. so that student could learn the subjects with more ditails, not just a glance without depth tearning. this course for us did not let to react.»
- Literature seminars! Introduction week with all activities! Clear course schedule, Group works, »
- Like a well seminar discussion and teamwork.»
15. What should definitely be changed to next year?- The course lacks of organization between teachers and administration. There is no time management for presentations (students) and teachers. There should be more discussion/application of the literature instead of repeating the literature in class. Use of technology (i.e. software for DoE, normal probability plot on paper????)»
- I think the amount of "examinations" during the weeks were a bit too much. Because of the lots of time spend with groupwork I sometimes had not enough time to prepare my individual work (literature) for the lectures, and therefore I didn"t understood things in the lectures, and so on...
Better and more exam examples for the midterm exam, I didn"t really knew what to expect then.»
- Coordination between teachers.»
- The read thread. In the first weeks there were alot of abbreviations that was explained leter in the course. »
- To hard for me to say»
- to my mind students need some time to prepare for exam. this year we had enough time before the second exam and we haven"t got any before the firts. that should be definitely changed»
- It is not necessary to pass exams with all the assignments we do each week»
- 1)Decrease the scope of the course, or split the course into 2 or several courses.
2)Increase the depth of the topics.
3)Have fewer but more relevant exercises.»
- focus on lecturing also and more industrial visits and industrial based projects rather than summarizing articles,»
- Less cases
mandatory classes»
- Less literature/more specific assigned literature. Less mandatory lectures.»
- a short course for statistics should be provided»
- you should review the timeline and workload of the course, so either you reduce the topics covered, or you give the students more time if you want to keep the same workload.»
- a) probabilistic questionnaire
b) on-time announcement of group work results/grades
c) more time before exam for preparation
»
- I think we need to balance the workload, such as the exam and the total number of projects, this is also for insuring the quality of the project. »
- the workload »
- less projects, maybe it is becuase the course is divided by different parts and teached by different teacher, but definitely you have to reduce the number of the projects, maybe with two or more bigger ones, but at least not with one small each week. It was too hard to think deeper and get fully understood on what we used.»
- The mandatory classes should be reduced. The workload should be reduced BUT the goals should be set higher. More quality and less quantity!»
- 1) Statisticaly quality control should be offered alongwith this course.
2) Practical examples should be included.
3) Every time going to VOLVO becomes boring.
4) Another good and in easy language should be teh focus instead of green book.»
- the group projects»
- i said in the previous one»
- Think about the workload!
Prepare the students better for the examination. They will definitely work hard to pass it, but you should give them hints to be better prepared.
Bo Bergman should try to make a break exactly after 45min. That helps Students to be more attentive.»
- I would underline and insist on the statistical things. We haven"t done so many calculation.»
- Bigger projects should be given instead of small projects.»
16. Additional comments- Better contact between the teachers. »
- Thank you for a good course!»
- Look at the affinity diagram that one group did at Sverkers KJ-shiba lesson. There you will find additional info. Now I just want to forget this course and hope for the future.»
- I think the schedule should be clear several weeks before the courses start, including information about whether or not the courses are mandatory. Especially for the international students...as they make plans for travelling (e.g. to go home) according to the schedule.»
- too much work at home and no backgrount in statistics were the biggest problems for everybody»
- i found this experience (the course) very usefull. at the begining i had some problems for the fact that the teaching system is quite different than the system i was enrolled in, but after getting used, i found it exciting and so usefull.»
- The propalistic questions of Bo part were very confusing. As English is our second language (both students & Professor, these questions may lead us to wrong answers because of misinterpretion of English.»
- i am very impressed with some of the articles handed out for reading and literature seminars. i have gained much knowledge thru them, and would be interested in reading more, related to future courses. Limited to 2 or less articles a week would be efficient. Thank you.»
- Thanks for listening to us.»
- Overall very good endeavour. Teachers are very nice and helping. Other staff is very cooperative also. »
- I like this programm. It seems actually well organized, teacher are enthusiastic, well prepared, good guest lectures... »
