- Some general comment about the program organization: Notice that student enter this course, some doesn"t have programming background, although in the 1st quarter a programming course is provided from biologist. Notice that some students which are from statistics, electrical engineer, and psychology, in the 1st quarter they took biology course not the programming course. - however, many key aspects of the sequence bioinformatics are still missed out in this course. At least the course should follow the content in the text book, and of course, with some extra aspects from current researches. Perl programming should be taught course, or leave as special assignment for student. Thus we have more 3 classes for other sequence bioinformatics aspects.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)

- As a informatician, I attend this course to gain insight in biological problems, to find gaps that informatics can solve. Of course, I have to learn successes and failures of existing algorithms first to develop a better one. But I found my self at the end know a few of bioinformatics algorithms, but still doesn"t have a clear pictures of how this jigsaws of tools/algorithm come together in the real biological research lab. .. I know how to develop the algorithm, but I don"t know how people will use it. But the problem might be that, those biology-background students, they know the problem well, and just want to learn more about algorithms.» (Some extent)

- I didn"t have the book, but I read the lecture notes for the exam. Some notes are really good, some are bad. Marinas notes need examples and exercises so that you have something to practise on for the exam. The big Perl booklet is very good. Tore"s and Marcelas notes are generelly ok.» (Some extent)

- Since the project work doesn"t contribute to the final score, I tends to feel that some students in my group doesn"t care much about the project because of this reasons. Group working is obviously preferably since we have to learn how to work with statisticians, biologists, and computer scientists, at this time not after we graduated. But the project score should be introduced, together with individual oral examination on the project subjects, the same like what being done in communication engineering program. Otherwise, the final score of each individual will just depends on the other. Of course, we have to learn how to motivate the others to work, but some people just very hard to be motivated. ,p» (Rather poorly)

14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- Perl programming part of the course, it was essential for our group projects, as well as useful on its own.»
- The classes that we had with Pearl,Molecular phylogeny patterns, databases etc all were fine.But the classes regarding the markov model freaked us out.We needed lab implementation of that or may be some assignments cause we had no practical evvaluation of that at all»

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Lectures about HMM should include worked examples related to bioinformatics to make the material easier to understand. We only saw 2-3 examples during the 4 lectures.»
- The style of presenting the hidden markov models to us. »
- All in all, I believe it"s about program organization. This course might be better make in quarter 3, after biologist learned "algorithm and machine learning" and computer scientist learned "genomics and genetics" in quarter 2.»
- HMM should be excluded.»
- The Markov lectures are interesting but they are to theoretical. You get "scared" of all the statistics and fail to see the use of it. More calculating examples and more practical applications are needed. It is very hard to study for the Markov part for the exam because of this»

16. Additional comments

- I personally believe that most of the students in Bioinformatics program, want to pursue in PhD level. So the course content should prepare us tobe ready for that level. Notice that most of the class comes from Asia which has 4-year undergraduate systems. Thus when it comes to the word "master student", we"re prompt to work hard (",)»
- Good course! It"s good that you get the try the "theory" from the lectures on the practicals. Tore"s home assignment are a good alternative to the practicals since they were quite easy. Exam was very relevant for the course, except for maybe the Markov questions»
