Goals and goal fulfilment

This course examines current state of the art, research-related topics in the fields of data communication, networks, distributed systems, and the Internet. Covering a broad range of topics and based on mainly scientific papers, it is intended for students planning to carry out a thesis project in any of these areas or anyone interested in the contemporary research problems of this field.

3. How understandable are the course goals?

18 svarande

The goals are difficult to understand»1 6%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»7 46%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»7 46%
I have not read the goals (given above) or I do not care»3

No, not at all»1 6%
To some extent»12 80%
Yes, definitely»2 13%
I already had a project before the course.»2

Genomsnitt: 2.06

- Maybe very little. A lot of very uninteresting topics. One good thing is that I know that I never want to see anything about distributed systems ever again. » (No, not at all)
- But allmost all thesis projects are research based.... » (To some extent)

17 svarande

Small extent»4 23%
Some extent»4 23%
Large extent»8 47%
Great extent»1 5%

Genomsnitt: 2.35

- Some assignments are just re-writing PDF articles. It doesn"t really help in understanding the topic, or going deeper, and it"s just not interesting as an assignment. Small projects that, for instance, cover a small part of the topic would be more fun and would give better clues of what the topic is really about.» (Small extent)
- I don"t know.» (Small extent)

- The web page was a mess. Fire was handled suboptimally, where assignments were added after and you had to re-form groups and other annoying things.» (Fair)
- A few wrong informations, like how many assignments we have to pass, etc...» (Rather well)

Fair»0 0%
Rather good»1 6%
Very good»13 81%
I did not seek help»2 12%

Genomsnitt: 3.06

- Not too bad the few times I asked something. On the other hand the idea to tell us we know nothing about proofs one week before the exam is a failure on an epic scale. Handins are pointless if you get accepted whatever you sumbit.» (Rather good)

10. How well has cooperation between you and your fellow students worked?

Summarizing questions

13. What is your general impression of the course?

17 svarande

Fair»4 23%
Adequate»4 23%
Good»7 41%
Excellent»2 11%

Genomsnitt: 2.41

- This course is bad and should be scrapped and buried. Preferably a stake through its heart just to make sure.» (Fair)
- The course seem unorganized. The parts that were really of interest was the first lecture and the lecture about self stabilization. P2P/AdHoc networks *could* have been interesting if some more time was devoted to it... Now it only seems that we learned was what already common knowledge. » (Fair)
- The course is a good idea and some of the lectures were really nice. The problem is that some topics were maybe too large to be presented in two lectures (like 3G or Self stabilization), so we have a really really distant view of the topic, and that is frustrating.» (Adequate)

14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- everything except long lectures like network flow measurement. »
- Assigments were good they should be there but can be modified»
- Best lectures for me : P2P and Parallel programming.»
- Nothing, everything was terrible. »
- Self stabilization theory»
- the teacher (elad) and guest lectures»
- Some lectures were interesting. Internet measurement, wireless security come to mind.»

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- network flow measurement. it should be broken in 2 lectures. and heuristics should be discussed for at least half of a lecture.»
- Instead of exam there should be project»
- Assignments that ask the students to re-write articles posted on the website. Ideally for me, every assignment should be small projects (like programming or anything else) that give the opportunity to get a closer view of an aspect of the topic.»
- If lectures about self-stabilizing are moved to the begining or middle of the quarter, students would find more time to practice formal proof writing.»
- No more useless bullshit courses where you learn nothing. If you want advertise your master thesis" this could probably be arrangable in some other way.»
- The Communication Systems part. It didn"t feel so relevant for our field. Perhaps I am wrong but...»
- The wireless lectures was good, but irrelevant for I think the majority of us, who have already seen those exact slides before. »
- Different lecture topics in a short time can not be usful.»
- It felt like too much focus was put on Elad"s lectures on the exam. Tying together the first assignment with the 2 last lectures is a bad idea. It is hard to get feedback and learn completely new stuff during the last week. Why weren"t all lectures part of the exam (3G)? I think there could have been something more interesting done about P2P and more relevant topics such as Bittorrent. Kazaa, Gnutella and Freenet are not that interesting anymore to spend that much time on.»

16. Additional comments

- Mr. Elad is a very nice and knowledgeable person.»
- The lectures were about a couple of different topics which were not much related to each other and it made studying really difficult. »
- No, I"m ok.»
- Have the course focus one a few things in a little bit more detail rather than briefly talk a little about everything. »
- I had higher hopes for this course. It is way to inconsistent.»
