Goals and fullfilment of goals

The overall purpose of the course is to provide all students, regardless of their subsequent choice of master programme and design studios, with a foundation and an ability to creatively and critically consider and reflect on questions related to the planning, design and management of the built environment within a context of sustainable development. To independently seek knowledge and information from different sources, as well as to reflect upon the implications of the vision of sustainable development in relation to architecture and planning, constitute important parts of the course.

The purpose is, moreover
- to provide an orientation and an understanding of different perspectives on sustainable development
- to present different approaches to the implementation of the call for sustainable development within the planning, design and management of the built environment at different levels (global–,,local) and in different settings
- to encourage critical reflection regarding what the notion sustainable development entails for the planning, design and management of the built environment and for professional practices within these fields.

- too many similar lectures the first week. i would appretiate more seminars, gruop assignments or similar, more intereaction with the orher students.» (rather bad)
- I dont think it was enough time within the schedule for reading the literature.» (rather bad)
- Samtal mellan elever saknades, mest pga avsaknad av lokaler att "hänga" i. Vissa föreläsningar handlade delvis om samma saker.» (rather good)

- course assignment needs improvement, perhaps including a design element. Variety of media very helpful, study trips were a great compliment to lectures. » (rather good)

- some of the study visits could be revised in the future since they didnt bring anything new than what we already knew. they put the ambition level rather low on what can be done in terms of sustainable building. if there is no good buildings nearby to visit, i would almost prefer to see a film or hear a lecture of a building somewhere else...something that can serve as an inspiration more than hamnhuset etc could.» (Very little)

- not sure what this question means, but literature could have been better associated with the lectures. At my previous university, there was usually a direct correlation between a specific lecture and a specific reading assignment. I think this strategy is helpful, if not necessary for may subjects, including SD. » (No opinion)

- Additional handouts were distributed poorly in class. Also need a new system for signing in, or no attendance sheet at all. Course syllabus and packets were not well designed (primarily in that there was too much text and important information was difficult to pick out) » (Rather bad)

- Kursen var jättebra förutom kritiken. Jag var i Pål Castells grupp. Där hade den ena kritikern inte förberett sig alls, och den andra kritikern hade bara tittat väldigt kort på plancherna, så vår kritik handlade mer om presentationsteknik på plancherna än om deras egentliga innehåll. Dessutom trodde jag att den skrivna uppgiften var viktigast och att plancherna skulle ses som ett stöd för presentationen. Det verkade som om många elever hade tolkat uppgiften på det sättet, så om det inte var meningen borde uppgiften formuleras annorlunda i kursprogrammet. Dessutom borde kritikerna varit betydligt bättre förberedda och kommenterat det vi sade när vi presenterade istället för hur planchen såg ut. Det kändes otroligt dåligt att sitta brevid utbytesstudenterna när våra kritiker kommenterade vårt resultat av uppgiften på ett så dåligt sätt.» (Very good)

- some lectures wern"t that good, many that were saying the same thing, specially in the first week. a little too much text for the first seminar. i miss oppurtunities, other then the seminars, to get to know the fellow students.»

- There was a lack of time for debating and talking in the assignment presentation. There is no need of 2 hours before starting at 10:30 (I think), 9:30 it"s ok. (one hour to look on the others assignment)»
- In my opinion, it is a good first step for the master of sustainability, perhaps not for the architecture one. There could be added some practical exercises which could complement well the course assigment.»
- maybe the possibility to have more interaction between students because there is a lot of lectures and just two seminars so it"s not so easy to speak with other student. Maybe we could have more discussions in groups or the assignment could be organised as a debate between two or more student where each could developpe a vision in his part of the assignment so it still a personal writting but it integrate more discussion with other persons... »
- the whole thing about passivehouses is a bit onesided and i would like to have heard more possibilities of sustainable design.»

- There were things that were repeated over and over again, so one change could be that the lecturers are more informed about what others already have said/showed. »

- As time passes, there will be new events and discoveries all the time, and it"s important that the course stays updated. But as it was rather up-to-date this fall I"m sure it will be the following years as well.»
- Many lectures were about the same things, so there was too much repetition. The texts for seminars could be less, so that we would have more time to really understand the texts. Now there was too little time to read all so at a lot of them I only had a quick overview.»
- sometimes it was a little bit hard to follow all the lectures of the day, maybe, I dont know very well how, but it would be better to make them more active, people should participate more. I would like more open debates maybe.»

- I think that the course have been really good, but I´,m a bit dissatisfied with the cross-criticts. I think that the teacher or critic should be a bit prepared not just arrive one minute ahead. I felt the I did not get out much from that day. »

- It is just a thought, but sometimes I didnt like the way sustainability was link to a kind of architecture (cheap, looking like old houses and with green visions...). Sometimes I had the feelings that this way of building would not be pssible to build everwhere, here in sweden yes because you have many resources and money. I would be very dissapointed if sustainability is linked only to a determined aesthetic. I like when we were told about the technical and social matters.»
