Goals and goal fulfilment

The programme syllabus states the goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the education. The learning outcomes are (excerpts):

After the master programme in Applied Mechanics the students should be able to

-formulate mechanical engineering problems as mathematical models.

-use advanced topics regarding mathematical modelling as well as computational and experimental techniques relevant for the specialized tracks.

-show insight and ability to work in teams and collaborate in groups with different compositions.

-be able to give written and oral presentations of their conclusions and knowledge to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

5. How understandable are the programme goals?

10 svarande

The goals are difficult to understand»0 0%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»1 10%
The goals are clear enough»9 90%

Genomsnitt: 2.9

6. Are the goals reasonable for a master degree?

- Goals are high but good. Hence reasonable» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)

Programme layout

The masters programme in Applied Mechanics consists of two compulsory courses in the first quarter (Mechanics of solids, Mechanics of fluids) and the compulsory course "Project course" in quarter four. There are also several semi compulsory courses.

7. What do you think of the programme layout?

10 svarande

- The layout is good, although it is quite hard to cover all mandatory/semimandatory classes in time if you choose to study abroad. I had to skip some classes I"d rather liked to take just to fulfill these requirements.» (OK)
- The compulsory courses are excellent!» (Good)
- It is very good to be able to choose from the three main paths even it is optional to do so.» (Good)
- I liked the format of 2 courses per study period.» (Good)
- Absolutely amazing!» (Very good)

8. Do you miss a course or a topic in the master programme?

10 svarande

Yes»6 60%
No»4 40%

Genomsnitt: 1.4

- More composite mechanics. » (Yes)
- One more Course in composites would be beneficial » (Yes)
- maybe something more of dynamic FEM, large deformation eg. crash problems. An additional CFD course, there is only one course in how to program Solve CFD problems FVM . There is 3 in FEM. Maybe an elective course in structural optimasation.» (Yes)
- Aeroacoustics, fluid-structural interaction» (Yes)
- Maybe an advanced course in compressible flows would be awesome. » (Yes)
- Nowadays I think that each master program should (even though it is computationally heavy) have some kind of management course, since there are a lot of positions in industry that demands or prefer that student has had such courses. » (Yes)

9. Are there any courses that you think should either be heavily revised or even removed from the programme?

10 svarande

Yes»2 20%
No»8 80%

Genomsnitt: 1.8

- Turbulence modeling - I still feel I learned nothing, the purpose of the assignments was unclear. Turbomachinery - tries to squeeze too much into a single course, no way you could handle the course in just 20h/week. FEM Struct: too much revision during lectures. The project in applied mechanics course needs a change regarding the individual grading - there are still hard feelings between the students in my group due to the not so smooth expressions of the teachers during at the end» (Yes)

10. Impressions of the Computational solid mechanics specialisation.

NOTE! Only answer this question if you attended at least 3 courses in the Computational solid mechanics specialisation (Finite element method - structures, Composite mechanics, Material Mechanics, Fatigue and fracture, Finite element method - solids).
What is your impression of the

Matrisfråga

- add even more FEM approach on composite mechanics and fatigue and fracture, focus on FEM, computational analysis and theory - focus less on how to solve problems by hand. »

- It"s good to have both theory and simulations, but it is also quite heavy to ALWAYS have several dense assignments AND a final exam. Maybe some more theory could be included in the assignments in some of the courses, reducing the need for an exam?»

No»1 10%

Genomsnitt: 1.9

- Well do I get to keep my memories if I could turn back time? For this question I think I would need to. If I didn"t, I would end up turning back time, obviously choosing the same programme and then coming to a point where I turn back time again. I would be stuck in a loop. Also would I be the same age as I am now or will I be younger? If I become younger, my cells would be younger. So, how would that affect the memory cells in my brain? I will also assume that I don"t become a copy of myself. There will be only me and I would not be meeting a younger version of me if I turn back time. Since we don"t know what would happen, if I could turn back time, i would choose not to turn back time. Not until we have concrete data on what would happen if one could turn back time at least. There is a point this comment. This programme has given me the ability to think critically. I absolutely love this programme, so I feel I don"t need to turn back time. The material provided itself is so good, I just need to revisit it and I have on multiple occasions. I guess this answers your question.» (No)
- Because I"m really interested in CFD and this is where you learn it. Also, I feel like I have gained valuable knowledge that will help me in my working life.» (Yes)
- CAS is a nice programme. I would have liked a mix» (Yes)

- CFS »
- Lars davidson"s notes. Structure of the semester. Layout of the courses.»

28. What should definitely be changed?

- Add more composite courses!»
- The feedback of the project course...»
- Nothing.»
- Generally, make it really clear where to find all course material and how to study. Keep the course material compact. Also, make all material accessible and clear so that the student becomme more independant of their pears and teachers. Some/many courses require unnessesarely huge amounts of time because of the layout of the course.»
- The multiphase course can have lecture notes like Lars Davidson"s lecture notes. It"s a really good course.»

29. Additional comments

- Thank you for this opportunity. »
- Students coming from non EU countries need to have a more selective screening. Students without scholarships did better than the ones with. »
