Goals and goal fulfilment

The programme syllabus states the goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the education. The learning outcomes are (excerpts):

After the master programme in Automotive Engineering the students should be able to

•,,,,,,,, identify and discuss vehicles as complex systems from a technical and a social perspective through a broad platform in automotive engineering.

•,,,,,,,, analyse new technical challenges and to create technical advancements in the automotive industry by three specialisation tracks, Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics or Safety.

•,,,,,,,, synthesize and evaluate automotive systems and products in terms of direct use and lifecycle analysis through consideration of environmental and economic aspects.

•,,,,,,,, through applications and practice
o utilize automotive related IT- and product development tools.
o demonstrate skills necessary for managing and contributing to team-based engineering activities and projects in a multi-cultural environment.

5. How understandable are the programme goals?

- I felt that some more options related to Automotive can be added for the first semester in second year including controls, testing and caliberation, electronics and electricals because the future seems to go so much electrical and no credits for Chalmers Formula Student would be good so that students dont have to miss other subjects.» (No, the goals are a bit too low)

Programme layout

The Automotive Engineering programme consists of one system-level course (Engineering of Automotive Systems) followed by 3 compulsory courses, one from each of the areas of Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics and Safety. Depending on preferences, the student can then select compulsory elective courses (at least 30 hec, four courses) to further make a specialisation. The last 30 hec are fully elective, but other courses from the programme can be selceted.

- I felt safety course and Engineering of automotive systems course should be made into one so that one other better subject can be chosen instead of loosing 7.5 credits without any elective course.» (OK)
- Im happy with the layout. But, the first course (Engineering of Automotive Systems) and the first safety course are in some cases giving the same knowledge. A lot of the information from the Engineering of Automotive Systems course was repeated in the safety course. » (Good)

8. Do the mandatory courses cover the main topics that you believe an Automotive Engineer should know?

These courses are Internal combustion engines, Engineering of automotive systems, Vehicle dynamics, Vehicle and traffic safety.

- Automotive Traffic Safety and Automotive Engineering courses should be merged into one.» (To some extent)
- I think more Machine elements should be included.» (To a certain extent, yes)
- I"m not really convinced if the course in Vehicle and Traffic Safety should be Mandatory. I feel that the Engineering of Automotive Systems course is enough for this topic.» (To a certain extent, yes)

9. Do you miss a course or a topic in the master programme?

- Some kind of machine element advanced.» (Yes)
- I would like a coarse in how to fix broken cars in practise. I think a good engineer from Automotive engineering should have at least some practical skills in fixing cars.» (Yes)
- The powertrain mechanics course(TME170) and the ridig body dynamics course was in the same block, we had to choose between one of these two. I would have preffered to do them both. I have choosen to go deeper into vehicle dynamics as well as powertrain (ICE advanced and VD andvanced). A good complement to these would have been both the powertrain mechanics course and the rigid body dynamics.» (Yes)
- There should be a possibility to take up more courses from Applied Mechanics like FEM and Fatigue & Fracture instead of Vehicle and Traffic Safety.» (Yes)
- An emphasis on control engineering is something that is missing. I understand that MPSYS is for that, but how about a course hat couples the effect of vehicle dynamics with control engineering. » (Yes)
- Transmission advanced» (Yes)
- I think that it could be good to have more applied vehicle dynamics, a subject that friends that were in Formula Student learned but that I didn"t, e.g. Kinematics of Suspension.» (Yes)
- Modelling and simulation, but not delivered by current professor for that course.» (No)

10. Are there any courses that you think should either be heavily revised or even removed from the programme?

13 svarande

Yes»6 46%
No»7 53%

Genomsnitt: 1.53

- Automotive Traffic Safety and Automotive Engineering courses should be merged into one.» (Yes)
- Ice advanced and vehicle dynamics advanced seem to be too difficult.» (Yes)
- Vehicle and Traffic Safety should be made optional.» (Yes)
- EAS should be more general. Suspension part of vehicle dynamics should be in vehicle dynamics course. Lateral dynamics, design of spring and damper could be a good exercise for EAS» (Yes)
- I feel that both Engineering of automotive systems and Vehicle and traffic safety should be combined into one so that we can have one more option for taking another elective.» (Yes)
- But some are a little bit general but not study deeply. E.g vehicle safety» (No)

11. Impressions of the Powertrain courses

NOTE! Only answer this question if you attended at least 2 of the courses in the Powertrain specialisation (Hybrid Vehicles and Control, Internal Combustion Engines Advanced, Powertrain Mechanics).
What is your impression of the

Matrisfråga

- The pedagogical level of the teachers is varying a lot. The courses could maybe be better if there was one dedicated professor having more lectures compared to the split up that exists now.»
- ICE Advanced could be a little bit more advanced. It felt like it was a lot of repetition from ICE basic.»

- The project within vehicle dynamics wasnt that much about vehicle dynamics. But it was a good project. »
