Goals and goal fulfilment

The programme syllabus states the goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the education. The learning outcomes are (excerpts):

After the master programme in Automotive Engineering the students should be able to

•,,,,,,,, identify and discuss vehicles as complex systems from a technical and a social perspective through a broad platform in automotive engineering.

•,,,,,,,, analyse new technical challenges and to create technical advancements in the automotive industry by three specialisation tracks, Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics or Safety.

•,,,,,,,, synthesize and evaluate automotive systems and products in terms of direct use and lifecycle analysis through consideration of environmental and economic aspects.

•,,,,,,,, through applications and practice
o utilize automotive related IT- and product development tools.
o demonstrate skills necessary for managing and contributing to team-based engineering activities and projects in a multi-cultural environment.

5. How understandable are the programme goals?

Programme layout

The Automotive Engineering programme consists of one introduction course about automotive vehicles and industry followed by 3 compulsory courses, one from each of the areas of Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics and Safety. Last two mandatory courses are chosen from 2 of the 3 areas. Depending on preferences, the student can then take two extra courses within one or two of the specialisations.

7. What do you think of the programme layout?

- Poor in comparison with Applied Mechanics Master. Specializations are not clear from the beginning of the Master. More mandatory courses in each specialization and some of them should be more theorical.» (Rather poor)
- To low level of the courses » (OK)
- Mixed courses from 1st and 2nd year in the frame of Double Degree, the order is different from an ordinary Master program» (OK)
- The idea of this layout is good, however, I was unaware of this focus of three different specialties until right now. More emphasis could be placed on this structure since it could factor into course selection.» (Good)
- The quality of the compulsory safety course was very low. The compulsory Powertrain course is one of the best courses in the Automotive engineering masters program. The basic vehicle dynamics course should use better litterature and not use powerpoint on the lectures.» (Good)
- For people with background in automotive, Engineering of Automotive Aystems feels like an easy course. Could be harder to get a 5 including deeper tasks and mantain the level to get a 3.» (Good)

8. Do the mandatory courses cover the main topics that you believe an Automotive Engineer should know?

These courses are Internal combustion engines, Engineering of automotive systems, Vehicle dynamics, Vehicle and traffic safety.

- Wish we had more options in the department to pick from. for example: if i want to specialize in engines, i had just two courses to pick. some courses were not related to what i wanted to do,» (To some extent)
- It would be more useful for the students to concentrate more on their areas of interest than doing so many courses which might not be interesting. The assignments should be more challenging. Vehicle Dynamics course was not really helpful for a lot of us. » (To some extent)
- The Automotive Systems course seems rather superficial but is spread widely across various systems. The Traffic Safety course however, tends to go unnecessarily deep into certain topics, and not sufficiently into others.» (To a large extent, but not completely)
- Engineering of automotive systems has too much overlap between lectures. Since almost every lecture was given by someone different, sometimes the person giving the lecture was unaware of our prior lectures and would repeat some of the most basic imformation.» (To a large extent, but not completely)
- I feel that having some knowledge of what parameters are taken during body design could be useful for better understanding of of the weight of design vs functionality in nowadays cars.» (To a large extent, but not completely)
- Vehicle and traffic safety was a bit vague. » (Yes definitely)

- Computational Fluid Dynamics» (Yes)
- I was surprised that suspension design wasn"t cover more in the dynamics courses. A brief introduction to suspension was provided in Engineering of Automotive systems but very little was offered since that course.» (Yes)
- More knowledge about standards and tolerances.» (Yes)
- Courses like FEM, CFD or Rigid Body Dynamics which belong to the Applied Mechanics Master should be included in the Automotive Master as well (probably as elective courses)» (Yes)

10. Are there any courses that you think should either be heavily revised or even removed from the programme?

20 svarande

- Engineering of automotive systems should be an elective course in the bachelor"s programme that is madatory to apply for automotive engineering. This would give opportunaty to more advanced courses and lift the level of the programme» (Yes)
- Vehicle and Traffic Safety is very bad organised lecture that transfers extremely little amount of knowledge» (Yes)
- The teacher for Vehicle dynamics could be way better, it"s a brilliant subject..only wish the teacher was better.» (Yes)
- Vehicle dynamics -low teacher"s performance Vehicle and traffic safety - Poor topics of the course» (Yes)
- The Traffic Safety course could be more widely spread and contain less extensive reading. The basic Vehicle Dynamics course will benefit from more interactive and practical teaching methods.» (Yes)
- VTS, revised: to many small assignments and reports, some instructions for group assignments unclear or not even provided online.» (Yes)
- Vehicle Dynamics» (Yes)
- TME121 Engineering of Automotive Systems. I think it"s a good course to have in the beginning of the program me, but there are room for some improvements. I believe a lot has already been done since I took the course last year though.» (Yes)
- The compulsory safety course» (Yes)
- Vehicle and trafic safety course should deepen more because it feels like a very easy course. How do the active systems work can be explained faster since are well known for any car magazine reader.» (Yes)
- The Intoductory course probably is a good "to break the ice" but after studying the whole Master it feels that it"s probably better to invest that 7,5 credits in another kind of course that goes deeper in one of the main topics of the Master.» (No)

14. What is your impression of the automotive project courses: Automotive Engineering Project and Chalmers Formula Student?

Please comment your answer!

- Cfs is the best course ive read during my chalmers time. The school should apprichiate this course more and give it better support. The industry know how good this course is and they are pinpointing people who had done the course. Both the school and cfs would gain from a better support from the school»
- The management of Chalmers Formula Student could be handled much better with a project manager who has recent and extensive experience from the project.»
- AEP: All in all a good project, but the way it is organized with rotating project manager within the group leaves much to be desired in terms of organization and order. Maybe that was a group specific issue I experienced. I think it would have been better to have one PM in the group throughout the project.»
- Very good, but also very demanding, but I guess it"s hard to do it in another if you aim for podium positions.»
- Chalmers Formula Student has been the best project/course I have taken at Chalmers from an educational point of view.»
- I feel like the best experience I have ever have in a teaching center. The work demand feels excessive but I have to say that it makes it a experience that reinforces one as an engineer and as a person.»
- Project courses really give useful and valuable experience to the student.»

- Both good and bad. Many exchanhe students lack experience in for example matlab and some of them freeloads on chalmers students and this prevents them from learning themselves » (OK)
- That does not really matter. But I suggest when forming the group, students whose schedule contains this course should be grouped together and students from other majors should be grouped together. 30. What should definitely be changed?

- TME202 course!!!»
- The teacher for Vehicle dynamics»
- The content of the Traffic Safety course could be more interactive and less unnecessary reading, the attitude of some of the VTS lab supervisors, Bengt Jacobson"s Vehicle Dynamics lecture delivery.»
- clearer pattern about the future study in early phases»
- Courses should be more practical oriented. More choice of subjects. Students interested to pursue their career in Aerodynamics have no options apart from the Road Vehicle Aerodynamics course. »
- Basic Vehicle dynamics course»
- The compulsory engine course and vehicle dynamics course»
- Vehicle dynamics course needs a revision. Vehicle and Trafic Safety, Engineering of Automotive systems and Road Vehicle Aerodynamics need to deepen more in the topics.»

31. Additional comments

- All in all I"ve liked the program, I feel that I"m definitely in the right place! One additional opinion, while not program or course specific I would like to raise the question, the lectures are ALWAYS continuously interrupted for the first 15-20 minutes by students arriving late. For this reason I would have welcomed a locked door policy at Chalmers!»
- Since the Automotive Engineering Programme has 4 free elective courses is quite easy to choose them according to your interests. However I think that it would be easier for students to have more courses to select into the Programe itself.»
