Goals and goal fulfilment

The programme syllabus states the goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the education. The learning outcomes are (excerpts):

After the master programme in Applied Mechanics the students should be able to

-formulate mechanical engineering problems as mathematical models.

-use advanced topics regarding mathematical modelling as well as computational and experimental techniques relevant for the specialized tracks.

-show insight and ability to work in teams and collaborate in groups with different compositions.

-be able to give written and oral presentations of their conclusions and knowledge to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

5. How understandable are the programme goals?

31 svarande

The goals are difficult to understand»0 0%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»5 16%
The goals are clear enough»26 83%

Genomsnitt: 2.83

6. Are the goals reasonable for a master degree?

31 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»0 0%
No, the goals are a bit too low»1 3%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»30 96%
No, the goals are a bit high»0 0%
No, the goals are set too high»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 2.96

- Why is there no question if the programme fulfills the goals? Understandable and reasonable does not guarantee fulfillment.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)

Programme layout

The masters programme in Applied Mechanics consists of two compulsory courses in the first quarter (Mechanics of solids, Mechanics of fluids) and the compulsory course "Project course" in quarter four. There are also several semi compulsory courses.

7. What do you think of the programme layout?

Genomsnitt: 4.25

- I think the project course is a well needed input for the otherwise verry theoretical MP. One thing I don"t like is that the basic semi compulsory courses can"t be. change for more advanced semi compulsory» (Good)
- Most courses uses computer assignments, good! Great way of learning! But I feel that half of the time I"m writing reports. I"m missing doing excercises with pen and paper, which is good for my understanding. » (Good)
- Mechanics of solids and fluids are very good to get every one to the same level. Also the project course was really good and helpful. » (Very good)
- The first two compulsory courses give you the opportunity to know if you want to take the Solid or Fluid path. For example, in my case, it help me to realize that I wanted to take the Solid path and do not take any course on Fluids at all.» (Very good)
- It is nice that you can choose your own courses!» (Very good)

8. Do you miss a course or a topic in the master programme?

31 svarande

Yes»6 19%
No»25 80%

Genomsnitt: 1.8

- One more fluent course in the basic semi compulsory section.» (Yes)
- There is missing a good course for the fluid mechanics in the first period of the last year (fifth year). There is a course in turbomachinery but another one aiming on the fluid dynamics is missing. » (Yes)
- More training in tensor algebra! » (Yes)
- I would like to have a course in large deformation theory.» (Yes)
- Contact mechanics» (Yes)
- Large strains mechanics» (Yes)
- I heard someone say it"s possible to choose phD students courses to include in the master. If that"s so, maybe some information about this could be good. I feel I chose some courses in the second year because out of the courses available in the master, they were the most suitable.» (No)
- Maybe something about crash and contact mechanics in some course.» (No)

9. Are there any courses that you think should either be heavily revised or even removed from the programme?

29 svarande

Yes»4 13%
No»25 86%

Genomsnitt: 1.86

- Structural dynamics - control» (Yes)
- Strucutral dynamics control should be heavily revised in all aspects. FEM structures should be revised on quality of lectures and also somewhat on content.» (Yes)
- Structural dynamics control » (Yes)
- Structural dynamics control. Too much talk Too little action » (Yes)

10. Impressions of the Computational solid mechanics specialisation.

NOTE! Only answer this question if you attended at least 3 courses in the Computational solid mechanics specialisation (Finite element method - structures, Composite mechanics, Material Mechanics, Fatigue and fracture, Finite element method - solids).
What is your impression of the

Matrisfråga

- I think maybe some fatigue should be included in the compulsory section so fluent people also learn this. »
- Some lack of teaching skills »
- I did put "Good" for teachers in this specialisation although the difference within these courses are significant. I would say that we have everything form "Poor" to "Very good" within these courses.»
- Coupling to industrial problems: it could be more related. More examples and exercises related to industrial problems. Explanation of good in teachers: some of them were really good and some of them not so good. It is much harder to follow teachers that use slides and do not write on the whiteboard.»
- It is very hard to follow teachers that use slides without writing anything on the blackboards.»
- Fem courses too theorethical. The theory doesnt help with practical understanding at all. The theory on paper are miles away from practical application, which basically means that there are two courses to learn in one: implemented fea and theorethical reasonings which are too difficult too prove during a course, but with more unproved simplifications and special circumstances still funny to test on an exam...»

- There was a master thesis presentation where nobody from fluid department showed up.»
- Zmart should be mainly marketed for the fifth year"s students and not the 1:st or 2:nd year, as it is now. »
- Information of phD studies were given at a FEM lecture recently. It was very good, and it is good to know a bit about it before we graduate in case it"s something we consider.»

27. What should definitely be preserved?

- The project course»
- The teachers»
- The project course, but include some more problems to choose of.»
- The course in composite mechanics»
- everything can be preserved»
- The teachers, they are always open for questions which is very nice!»
- The course layout, with some mandatory and some elective courses is very good. »
- Course structure»
- I am very happy with the Structural dynamics specialisation.»
- Everything»
- Well designed larger assignments»

28. What should definitely be changed?

- All the FEM courses are very dry»
- It should be harder to pass courses, this is a master program that should be harder to pass. Only when studying 150% the load sometime reaches 40h a week and i"m not very bright. »
- Examples other than engines and wind turbines. Our knowledge can be applied to so many different things so it would be nice to hear something about that. »
- Using university admissions to apply for the school. My application arrived 1 day to late due to snow storm in my home country, so the post was not delivered. University admissions didn"t care about that and didn"t even want to see a signed letter from the post office explaining the reason why the application was late. Also I think that it is not necessary to have FEM background to get in to fluids dynamics. »
- Less workload»
- nothing»
- More presentation technique of technical projects »
- I would like to see more industrial examples (problems or projects) and more inspirational examples by teachers.»
- It gets really difficult to follow the lectures when the teachers use slides and just talks, because you do not follow the derivations, so I would rather if they use the whiteboard.»
- Nothing»
- Split up fluid and solid departements completely »
- Less written reports, or at last better report guidelines. Sometimes more effort is put on the report than the assignment themselves. Of course I understand the significance of reporting and documenting work, but in this school environment it sometimes becomes ridicuolus. »

29. Additional comments

- Would be nice with some applied mechanics hangaround like TD or PPU, but i know this is to expensive.»
- free coffee on Fridays :)»
