- Allthough applications and choice of areas of study might have improved with better tutoring during the first half of the on site studies and better leadership during prestudies. The ambitious goals set up in the studio programme with regard to driving actual, physical change might also need to be put forward if they are to really shape the proposals. » (Excellently)

- I think the course literature gave a decent introduction to Zanzibar, but could have been more extensive / more in depth.» (Rather little)
- A well organized discussion around the material would have given a deeper and perhaps also more relevant understanding than writing reviews. See the course Sustainability and the design professions which had a more focused/active aproach to reading and sharing knowledge. » (Rather big)

20. How did the organisation, memoranda, direct information etc. function?

- Despite it being Africa (and things changing all the time) the communication and organization of the course was still quite poor. The first two weeks in Zanzibar were rushed and too heavy and the organization of choosing groups was especially rushed and poorly executed (we had no time to absorb and reflect on the visits and discuss with each other what kinds of projects we"d be interested in doing).» (Rather bad)
- First half of the course suffered from an appearent lack of understanding from the teachers" part of the need for educational infrasturcture. It is understandable that schedules change or that a sceminar doesn"t support the aims of the course but not acceptable that it happens to the extent that the function of the scool as a tutor is is undermined. One could argue that we as students could have set up our own study groups and seminars and perhaps we should have. In combination with problems to supply consistent information about preparations and the technical parts of the field trip, the all in all impression was that of a unorganised administration. The lack of organisation carried on to the first part of the field trip which was marked by difficulties in communication between students and administration. Many issues could well have been worked around if a discussion had been pressent about what the students expected or could cope with. There were examples as well were these issues was of no ones fault but all the more reason to communicate. This communication greatly improved over time thanks to our assistant teachers will to support the students situation and subsequently with the sepparate projects taking off and responsible teachers" arrival. » (Rather bad)
- Some information came out rather late though and sometimes it was difficult to know which teacher toturn to since we had so many. For example, we didn"t reeceive taht much information about the trip. We didn"t get nay information about our families, which would have been very valuable. Since it is a big trip, it is important for us to get as much info as possible BEFORE travelling! Also, it would have been good if the teachers could have put in the course memo what vaccinations were necessary, like yellow fever was needed to be allowed in Zanzibar, which we received no info about and some doctors were unaware about that too. » (Rather well)

- Overall, I think this course was excellent. I have definitely learned a lot and it has changed my future ambitions and the way I see my responsibilities as a designer. I would absolutely recommend other students to take this course. » (Very good)
- Administration and introductory parts aside, the course is an extraordinary opportunity and the competence of both responsible teacher and examinor is incredible. » (Very good)

24. What should be preserved next year?

- Inger-Lise is wonderful! She"s a very good teacher and critic. »
- THE REALITY STUDIO COURSE»
- Ingerlises contribution and spirit»
- Long project-work period in Zanzibar was really essential for going in depth, two-day exhibition in Zanzibar, poster exhibition at Chalmers, the pocketbook is a nice idea, but give students more options (pocketbook, newsletter, etc.) and make sure it gets published!»
- Fusion with design systems course»
- Place. Talking to students that have taken the course in kenya, the feeling one gets is that the knowledge aquired in Zanzibar is more widely applicable. »

25. What shuold be changed the nest year?

- organisation and some teacher who is not as helpful as students need»
- I don"t think that Jorgen should be included. I have not appreciated his attitude, especially in the final presentations where he humiliated the two students he gave critique to. He completely stomped on their entire work, instead of trying to find better ways of explaining what they had done wrong. The critic part of the presentations is there to HELP the students, not to make them feel bad and useless. At least one of the students was brought to tears after, which should not happen! The critic should consist of questions and comments that will help the students to further explain their work. If you have specifics in the way that Jorgen had, you can easily ask to see the student after the presentations are done to explain what you found wrong, instead of doing it in front of the other 25 students. It was really awful and it made me really upset that none of the other teachers did anything! In other projects and courses I have been involved in, a student acting that way would have been failed on the presentation and I certainly think that a teacher should keep to a more professional role. »
- SHOULD BE GIVEN MORE TIME FOR COLLECTION OF INFORMATION»
- Catarina did a very poor contribution to the course.. atleast at site down in Tanzania. Whats been going on behind the scen is something that shouldnt affect the students.»
- Better organization overall, more constant tutoring by the same people (it"s okay to have guest tutors, but it would be nice to have someone follow us all the way through in addition to the guest tutors), integrate design systems more - I think it would be great if everyone in reality studio learned design systems thinking, and I think it"s better if everyone works in a group, better housing organizations (ie. don"t put ten people in the same house -- or let students know what to expect better and choose if / if not they want to live in such a big group) & suggest option of finding a private apartment on their own. It might be nice to have more formalized peer review workshops between groups (possibly connected to mid-course presentations)»
- The fusion with design systems course should start at the beginning »
- More engaging and relevant prestudies, more organized communication and if possible having experienced tutors at earlier stages. »
- You should give more specific information about the trip to the students and maybe more lectures»

26. Other comments

- make sure that critics are done in a correct way and not pinpointing every mistake each student has done! »
- GENERALLY THE COURSE IS GOOD BUT NEEDS MORE TIME FOR THE PROJECTS TO BE EFFECTIVELY ACCOMPLISHED»
- On the other hand Annika did a great job.. If not for her the situation would have collapsed, at least before Lngerlise came. »
