1. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

29 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»0 0%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»24 82%
No, the goals are set too high»5 17%

Genomsnitt: 2.17

- Have just read them once, they are a bit too general» (?)
- But they are not very specific and the course content felt more advanced than what would be appropriate for Chalmers stundents" background.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- I"m not sure what the goal were. The course seemed to cover alot of topics in a fair amount of detail. There was alot of content to this course.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- Well maybe not, but since the course shoulde be basd on what we learned in previous courses, ad everything there aviously was incorrect, they became too high» (No, the goals are set too high)
- We did not get any detail goals, so it is hard to say some thing.» (No, the goals are set too high)

Learning outcomes and examination

After completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- understand the interrelation between geotechnics and previous gained knowledge in mathematics, physics and structural mechanics
- analyse and estimate the pore pressure in a soil profile
- evaluate geotechnical theories and methods and choose between them in various fields of application
- analyse the interaction between soil and other structural elements
- design a number of geotechnical structures

2. To what extent have you reached the learning outcomes?

30 svarande

0-20%»2 6%
20-40%»4 13%
40-60%»17 56%
60-80%»4 13%
80-100%»3 10%

- I think she has to loon what we learned in previous courses and teatch us with that a a base. Since everything we already been learning aviously was incorrect. New methods became too hard since she did not show us how to do in practice. She just went through a lot of teory that was suposed to be based on what we already knew, but since we did not the course became crappy and too hard. » (20-40%)
- Difficult to say since they are not very clear.» (40-60%)
- I would really have liked a project in which it would have been possible to really get some more practical understanding of the topics. Especially goal number three ("evaluate geotechnical theories and methods and choose between them in various fields of application") would have been very interesting to do more practically (a group project?), so to say. » (40-60%)
- I got the feeling that we should know every thing just to get a grade 3» (60-80%)

3. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

Please consider all kinds of examiantions during the course: assignments, projects, seminars, final written exam, etc.

30 svarande

No, not at all»2 6%
To some extent»17 56%
Yes, definitely»10 33%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»1 3%

Genomsnitt: 2.33

- This was the worst exam i have done on Chalmers. The time was to little, and to many theoretical questions. So I had almost know time to realy show what i can, since every thing was so stressfull» (No, not at all)
- It was a pity that the theory on the exam only was about the given example questions. Definitely, they were given us too late. If we had gotten them earlier we would have had time to discuss them with classmates and teachers. Now we only had the two hours on the tuesday (many of us had an exam the day after) and the friday to ask specifically about the trickiest example questions. » (To some extent)
- More when that! How are we supose to know how to calculate thinks if there are no exsamples thats shows how to do it. If she doesn"t show us an if it is NOT in the book how are we supose to know? » (Yes, definitely)

Teaching and learning

4. To what extent has the organised teaching activities been of help for your learning?

- She was not well-prepared, she should have put examples Of part I earlier than that.» (Small extent)
- The lectures have mostly been far too advanced and felt as not that relevant to the learning outcomes that were later examined.» (Small extent)
- The lectures hasn"t been what they should"ve. The slides contains almost no information, Im sure that Minna knows alot but it is impossible to follow if the slides are just one picture. More supporting phrases on the slides so it is possible to print them out and use them during the lectures.» (Small extent)
- Almost nothing, it is too much and too fast. Focus to learn us less things and show us how to do things in practise instead.» (Small extent)
- I found the lecture to just follow the book, meaning I wasn"t motivated to attend. The help sessions could have been better organised and thereofre far more helpful.» (Small extent)
- But I have spend very much time on self studies as well.» (Large extent)

5. To what extent has the teaching material and the course home page been of help for your learning?

- It was too much, too fast on the lectures. The book was not very good at all, it was difficult to understand and did not explain why things are the way they are. » (Small extent)
- Book i realy bad, i don"t understand a thing when I"m reading it. It just tell you: it is like this but not way.» (Small extent)
- I bought the book and that was what I used mostly. It did help hvaing the answers to problems made available.» (Some extent)
- The tutorial problems were partly verry useful but some of them were more like the lectures, not relevant to the learning outcomes and examination.» (Large extent)
- But the homepage has been a little inorganizied. I am thinking about the tutorials» (Large extent)
- The course litterature where good.» (Great extent)

6. How were the opportunities to get feedback and for asking questions and getting help from teachers and supervisors?

30 svarande

Very poor»1 3%
Rather poor»10 33%
Rather good»16 53%
Very good»3 10%

Genomsnitt: 2.7

- I"ve only heard from a few other students that it had been a pain getting answers regarding the final examination.» (Very poor)
- She was out of town a lot and didn"t answer her mail.» (Rather good)
- But we never asked so many questions, for example the lectures were often too advanced (and "fast") to have time to realize what questions you would need/want to ask. Also difficult to connect to the previous knowledge. Though, very interesting (lectures) especially with different "real life" projects that the lecturer told us about.» (Rather good)
- supervisors help us very well to easy to find them» (Rather good)
- specially the first part. the secon part it was best to as the responible teacher » (Very good)

Genomsnitt: 2.38

- We got everything too late.» (Very badly)
- Examples+ solutions should have been put up on The homepage earlier. You learn by doing» (Rather badly)
- The example questions should have been handed out earlier! Optimally at the course start, or at least half way through the course.» (Rather well)
- Very well, except the solutions to the tutorials.» (Very well)

Study climate

8. To what extent have the facilties at Chalmers been appropriate to support your studies in this course, e.g. lecture halls, study rooms, equipment, computer labs etc.

- No use of computers or group rooms.» (Small extent)
- The situation in the Väg- och vatten building regarding space per student is not acceptable. I have been studying elsewhere.» (Some extent)
- The projector in VB Was bad for a wile so we were not able to see the hole area of the screen» (Some extent)
- In the lecture hall VB and VA the air is very bad!» (Some extent)
- Studied mostly at home, yet another reason why The examples and solutions should be put up on The homepage» (Some extent)
- I am an erasmus student and geotechnic courses I have taken before have involved some kind of practical and lab work. This would have helped with a practical understanding of the topic» (Some extent)
- It would be good if we could visit the lab and actually see all the tests she is talking about. » (Large extent)

9. How much of your available time for studies in this study period did you spend on this course?

- I did come to most of the lectures. Other than that I just worked on my other course.» (Low)
- Not made clear at the beginning of the course what would be examined, especially in Part II of the exam. As a result far too much time was spent on tutorial questions which we found out a week before the exam would not be examined.» (High)
- Only high at the end of the term, very low before that» (High)
- It was too much!» (Too high)

Summarising questions

Poor»11 35%
Fair»4 12%
Adequate»12 38%
Good»3 9%
Excellent»1 3%

Genomsnitt: 2.32

- The teachers were not well prepared, comparing to other courses I have taken, I feel this course is quite messy.» (Poor)
- The lectures were conducted in a rather boring way. There was no interaction with the students. The lecturers did not present the course in a good way.» (Poor)
- It was too much, too fast and on a too high level.» (Poor)
- Too hard» (Poor)
- I am vary interesste about geotechnics but this course did not exceed my expetation. Specellay the exam where I feelt i could not show my knowledge» (Adequate)
- It"s not very well structured and it"s not clear at all times what is important to learn and what is not. For example the tutorials could have been explained better, e.g. how to calculate generally and what scenarios to be on the lookout for.» (Adequate)
- It feels like Minna believes that we are on a higher level than we really are » (Adequate)
- weak connection between lectures and exercises» (Adequate)
- Very interesting subject, very experienced lecturer!» (Good)

12. What is the remaining value of the course in the future

31 svarande

Very small»4 12%
Rather small»6 19%
Neutral»13 41%
Rahter high»6 19%
Very high»2 6%

Genomsnitt: 2.87

- I don"t feel like I really understood that much.» (Neutral)
- But I"m disappointed about the exam, I had studied really much throughout the course but my exam felt very, very bad.» (Rahter high)

13. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- ALL»
- The learning outcomes are good and most of the course content is fine but the lectures need to be changed so that they match the rest of the course.»
- "Work shops" so the students can get help and practise the tutorials»
- the exercise»
- The exercises»
- The exam example questions on theory, those were very helpful in prioritizing what information to focus on.»
- being able to get the 5 in the exam and not having an oral exam.»
- Jorge, he explain very well»
- exercise sessions and the responsible teachers for them.»

14. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Teachers should prepare well before they come to class, there are so many misunderstanding about the exams.»
- introduce: 1-Pile foundation (field visit) 2- Laboratory soil tests »
- I think it should be smaller, don"t cover as much or at least make every section smaller.»
- The lectures!»
- Lectures»
- Change the book, and show the students how to do things instead of ty to learn the 100 thinks i a velocity faster than light.»
- The theoretical questions should have been handed out in the beginning of the course.»
- the exam!!! »
- Examples and solutions put up on homepage early in The course.»
- *Slower lectures, some more basics in start of each lecture (when appropriate), perhaps *Teacher calculating one example in start of each tutorial to show the basics *Some small project work (to forced to really understand a geotechnical problem)»
- - The lack of examples during lectures. Not even one single example was demonstrated in Minnas part of the course. Do not underestimate the power of simple, straight forward examples. - Information about what is expected from students. Again, since we have zero examples, we dont know what we are supposed to be able to calculate. Everything in the book? Tutorial excersices? Since 30% of the exam was a problem which was not handled in tutorials, I guess not. »
- More examples on the black board! »
- More applied geotechnics would have been nice, e.g. a project.»
- Do some calculation examples on the lectures, as it was now you had pretty much no idea about how to solve examples but just tried to find something in the book that looked similar. Also make the solutions to examples available from the start so you can look there if you get stuck on something»
- The lectures were not good. It was difficult to get an overview of the subject of single lectures and to be able to sort out the important information. I think that a good lecture starts with an introduction to the topic of the day and continues with further development into the subject. After that some examples of how this knowledge is used in practice and a summation at the end pointing out the most important parts. Some kind of project work during the course is helpful and I think that it could help this course. »
- The mandatory book is very expensive. The tutorial lectures didn’,t work very well.»
- more involvement and have lectures which are not only based on the text book. Possible practical work to take some pressure off the exam»
- The exercises should not only consist of own work. Minna or some of the other teachers should solve examples on the table also. »
- some of material on the hompage must be change,we couldn"t read them,»
- lecture systems should be much more pedagogical and there will be more examples. maybe a small individual or group project could also help understanding the subject.»
