Learning outcomes and examination

After completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Show in a written exam the scientific basis for estimating, evaluating and controlling risks in geo and water engineering projects.
- Perform event tree and fault tree risk analysis based on system descriptions of geo and water engineering systems.
- Evaluate risk controlling measures in geo and water engineering projects by using decision analysis methods, specifically cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and multi-criteria analysis (MCA).
- Analyse uncertainties in risk calculations and decision analysis outcomes, based on statistical inference methods and Monte Carlo simulation.
- Demonstrate in project assignments the strengths and limitations of CBA and MCA for supporting decisions on risk reduction.
- Apply software tools for risk assessment and decision analysis (Crystal Ball, Web-HIPRE).
- Give clear presentations in a technical report, presented orally and in written form, of the findings of a risk assessment and decision analysis.
- Understand and critically review risk controlling measures presented by other workers.

- But you can always improve things as give clear presentation and similar. I think I"ve reached the goals very well but I can still improve a lot I mean. And we did not handle MCA in our project so the learning outcome "Demonstrate in project assignments the strengths and limitations of CBA and MCA for supporting decisions on risk reduction" is not totally correct.» (80-100%)

- Återgen det matematiska språket var för avancerat alla satt som frågetäcken. Annars var lektionerna bra.» (Some extent)
- I have never had so bad teaching as we had in the statistic part! I can´,t say that i know any student that understood anything or little in that part. And i think this is shown in the exam» (Some extent)
- BUT, the statistical part and the part with the MCDA was unstructured.» (Large extent)

- Some of the literature was good while part of it did not contribute much to the learning. Some parts were too deep without any real reason, it would have been good with guidelines about which parts were included in the course and what was extra.» (Some extent)

- Our supervisor did not even give us feedback on the whole report/excel sheet, we had to go to Andreas and ask question since she couldnt answer them.» (Very poor) (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)
- It was stated that there should be no consultation outside scheduled hours, which maid us afraid to seek up and ask the questions needed for the group assignment. The first part of the assignment was also very unclear and further times for consultation for this part should have been provided.» (Rather poor)

- Though, the initial probability calculations took some time (I"m speaking about the landslide) and was a bit tricky. Since it is so important as input for the rest of the results, we really wanted to have a correct probability and it took a lot of time, doing it again and again and again. » (Very good)
- Except for one teacher. The feedback was vary an even between the teachers. This resulted in that the students asked didn"t ask one teacher» (Very good)

- There is though plenty to improve about the course. The statistical part (it doesnt really feel that it is a part of the course, it should either be integrated better or be removed). Also some improvement on the organisation.» (Good)

- n talking about the upload to the homepage.»
- I don not know exactly how to change it but the initial probability calculations took some time (I"m speaking about the landslide) and was a bit tricky. Since it is so important as input for the rest of the results, we really wanted to have a correct probability and it took a lot of time, doing it again and again and again. Felt like unnecessary time compared to the rest of the project. »

- Skip the statistics lectures! No one I talked to felt it was at all relevant for the course and no one had answered the statistics question on the exam.»

- It is rather strange that the MCDA-workshop is compulsary but not the exercise. Is rather difficult to do the exercise on your own. It would also be better if you removed the individual assigment, why have it in the first place? Otherwise i think the course was good, im not satisfied with the supervision we got, we did not get very much constructive feedback. It would also be good if the individual assigment hand-in (if it will be one next year) is not depending on one person when talking about the upload to the homepage.» (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)
