- Phillipes seems like he is unprepared, unable to get out what he wants to teach or not familiar with the English language. He takes too long pauses between meanings/words, like he dont know what to say next.» (Small extent)
- Lecturer needs proper pedagogics. Hard to understand. Doesn"t explain the basics. Lecture slides are overly complicated.» (Small extent)
- I had to look for on internet and watch recorded material from lectures for the same course in another university. The way that professor chose to present material of the course was not helping in the learning procedure. » (Small extent)
- The teacher really needs to go on a course in pedagogic teaching, very confusing and hard to listen to him more or less all the time. He feels very confused in what he is trying to teach. Nothing personally!» (Small extent)
- You needed to go to the lectures because the slides were confusingly written and the literature felt like it tried to explain things in such a hard way as possible.» (Some extent)
- Some very important concepts should be explained more clearly maybe with different methodological approach and more interaction with the students. So that the teacher get a better understanding if the audience understand the material and if he/she need to explained the things again.» (Some extent)
- The pace of lectures was not appealing.» (Some extent)

- No exams on the course site, was forced to pay to get them from DC.» (Very badly)
- The material provided was very bad organized. *A big part of the presentations(power points) were published very late on the course web site - 2 weeks before the exams. *The power points are looking more like temporary drafts than the material presented for a course. The sides sometimes are unorganized, without a constant structure and without the required description that would help the reader to understand what they are talking about. » (Very badly)
- No clear reading instructions until the last half, or more, of the study period = VERY bad.» (Rather badly)

- Skip the exam, make it a big project instead incorporating everything we went through in the course from the ground up. No external buggy code, no unclear labs. Hand in proof with each implementation.» (Poor)
- Many students that took the basic course was discouraged by the fact that Pillipes was teaching this advanced course and i understand that fully. » (Poor)
- Interesting topic but sadly the course is a mess. Needs refactoring. Labs were not good. Same framework should be used for all labs so time can be spent on learning about distributed systems and no to learn a new framework for every lab.» (Poor)
- Lack of reading instructions, compare to many other courses. Reading instructions to this years course book came very very late in the course. Page references in the lecture slides point to previous years course book, never updated through out the course. Lecture slides lack information, for example explanation of variable definition, or reference to such.» (Poor)
- The labs were not corrected until some day just before the final deadline. The last Lab hasn"t even been corrected now, almost 2 weeks after the final deadline.» (Poor)
- The course can be designed to be taught in a different direction where we can learn the application of algorithms and concepts in real world. The course had a very interesting syllabus but we were not guided well.» (Fair)
- The course should probably been much better if the teacher didn"t felt so confused all the time.» (Fair)
- Intreresting topic, good labs but poor consultation (and the time to get feedback).» (Adequate)

15. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- There are a lot of things that can be better»
- Nothing»
- Labs are both interesting and challenging.»
- The advanced distributed systems course is very important subject for students who are going to Computer Networking Industry. So The topics and syllabus is good, but how they have organized and taught was poor. If they organize well and properly deliver it to the students, i think this is the best course»
- The programming assignments.»
- Nothing?»
- The topics and the organization of the course.»
- The syllabus.»
- The labs were great but the student will need more teaching in how to perform them.»

16. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Lab PMs must be changed. MUST!»
- - Phillipes need to change his lectures very much (Speech, pronunciation, delivering of the subject) »
- Assignments were more lab projects. Lab periods should be applied to the course since getting help on these small projects was very difficult. »
- The course book is not good for the scope of this course. Exercise sessions would benefit this course a lot. For example practicing on proofs, would lead to more questions in class too.»
- Improved reading instruction, make sure it"s updated. Point out the master thesis as a core tool to understanding the course. Make lecture slides more informative regarding definition of Linearizability»
- The labs must be corrected much sooner.»
- formation and contents of Lecture Slides, The quality of teaching»
- The way that the course material is presented»
- THE LABS. More preparation for the exam, I mean - I didn"t wether I should study proofs or techniques. And if there is 150 (!) pages extra material than the book there must be more pinpointed than this course.»
- Teaching methodology should aim for more interaction. The assignments should either be reduced or should give some credits.»
- The lecture slides, the teaching direction and better organization of lab assignments.»
- The main teacher needs to be more confident in speaking in front of students. A more structured way of how the whole course is performed is needed I think, or it"s just because of the teacher.»
- Make the slides available before the lectures if possible. There was a link to last years slides but no mention whether how correct they would be for this year.»

17. Additional comments

- Overall feel was that the course was ill-prepared and all over the place.»
- Since over 50% of the students dident attend to the lectures, i assume someone will look into the reason rather then dismissing it.»
- Course materials such as slides should be updated so that they are more informative than the ones being currently used. Examiner and TAs should try to encourage more interaction from the students during lectures. Lastly, results of assignments need to be returned in a more timely manner. This may be related to how complex the so-called "assignments" were.»
- The course have interesting content, but the lecture slides and reading instructions should be improved.»
- I have taken the exam 3 times before and failed. This time I don"t know how it went because the correction is not finished. I don"t understand how it can take this long. It has been 3 weeks now, whats the deal with that?»
- The last lab assignment was very interesting to work on but the presentation of the same topic by 25 groups in a single day gets monotonous and boring. We would have preferred variety of projects like 1 topic for 5 groups. This would make it interesting and as well expose us to wider applications where the concepts can be applied.»
- Lecturer made repeated statements that all material was necessary for the exam, however on the exam only content from the lectures were used, while the reading material goes far beyond the lectures.»
