Your own effort

1. How many hours per week did you spend on this course?

We mean total time, that is, it comprises the time you spent in class and the time you spent on your own work. Try to estimate the average time over the entire study period.

- And more!!!!!» (At least 35 hours/week)
- The hand-in assignments and projects took a lot of time. Too much I think. I did not have much time over for the other course neither doing the tutorial exercises in this course.» (At least 35 hours/week)

2. How large part of the teaching offered did you attend?

Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»16 24%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»31 46%

Genomsnitt: 2.93

- As always: I take a look on them in the beginning of the course, then forget about them. It is hard to understand the goals before you know anything about the subject of the course. The course goals could be highlighted as you progress by the course.» (I have not seen/read the goals)
- except the last one: "describe processes for innovation and commercialization of new products, and for financing startup companies". Left from other course?» (The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn)

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

Yes, definitely»35 61%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»2 3%

Genomsnitt: 2.66

- There was a question which I feel was more directed at those taking a basic signal processing course, which was enough for me to pass the exam, given my grade in my grades in the projects and hand ins. I simply don"t understand why question 2 on the exam was on that paper...» (To some extent)
- The content of the exam corresponded well to the contents of the course. However, I do not like the concept of an exam with almost no calculations. I think the exam should test what we are able to do more than how well we can phrase what we can do.» (To some extent)
- I think that exams did not match the way of the course I taught.Maybe more exam level and type quizes should be done during the quarter» (To some extent)
- A very extensive and good exam. Tests understanding and application.» (Yes, definitely)

Very poor»3 4%
Rather poor»7 10%
Rather good»33 49%
Very good»22 32%
I did not seek help»2 2%

Genomsnitt: 3.19

- We asked question but the were never answered.» (Very poor)
- Poor regarding the projects. Since you"re not allowed to ask other project groups, I expect to get help from teachers. Otherwise good. » (Rather poor)
- We wanted to learn how to solve the exercises and spended alot of time to try solve them. however we couldn"t get it Exactly correct in which we wanted some guidance. The answers we got when we asked a teacher werent sufficient enough to understand what we did wrong, they were cryptic to say at least. And even though we wanted to learn how to solve the exercises correct and spent alot more time than we should have we could still not get to the correct answer before the time went out and we needed to hand in. In my opinion something is wrong when student who clearly want to learn and spend alot of time on learning, arent getting a fair chance to learn it in time.» (Rather poor)
- Både ingemar och tomas ställde upp när man behövde hjälp. MYCKET uppskattat.» (Very good)
- Constant availability, really good support for the assignments. I do believe this is part of the reasons why I got a grade 4 in the end even though I am a mechanical engineer.» (Very good)
- Some problems to get help in the start of the first project, need more question time.» (Very good)

Too high»16 24%

Genomsnitt: 4.01

- More hand ins and more useful tutorials» (Low)
- Lots of deadlines, constantly, but gave proportional help for the exam.» (High)
- I must though say that this is the first course i´,ve had during my time at chalmers where it was worth putting the time and effort into it since you actually did learn something from all the assignments and projects and also that these things were part of the exam.» (High)
- Spenderat löjligt mycket tid på den här kursen.» (Too high)
- High/Too high Alot of handins and projects (in both courses this period). Basicly no time to spare for excercises and home studies. » (Too high)
- Did not have enough time to do study the other course as much as I would liked. » (Too high)
- The work load was definitely too high. I think an adequate work load would be to have two individual hand-in assignments and two project reports.» (Too high)
- Insane!» (Too high)

- I was at school seven days a week and often 10 hrs a day, it felt a bit much.» (Too high)
- Because I am doing my master thesis in parallel .» (Too high)

Good»27 40%
Excellent»20 29%

- The project and assignment is too heavy. However, the tutorial and lectures are not related tightly with such assignment and project.» (Adequate)
- I think the content of the course was good but there were too many projects and hand-in assignments.» (Adequate)
- Good material however to little time to learn all!» (Adequate)
- I liked that methods you learned was connected to the real world.» (Good)
- A lot of work, but interesting and rewarding projects.» (Good)
- Good but the workload was insane» (Good)
- One of the best courses i had on Chalmers!» (Excellent)
- It requires its time, but a very good course!» (Excellent)
- the course is really well done. Even with a poor background in signal processing I found information I needed in the course material» (Excellent)
- A very good course that feels very relevant to my master program (MPCOM). It is certainly nice to work with practical projects even though not much programming needed to be done on the last one.» (Excellent)
- A good mix of theory and hands-on practice. » (Excellent)
- I"ll definitely recommend it.» (Excellent)
- Very good lectures, lab assignments, and home assignments, which seems to be a rare thing among master courses here at Chalmers. Many lecturers seems to be too lazy to bother with deriving the equations/formulas/theorems on the blackboard, even if they are of vital importance for the subject/course. Instead they simply flash the results on a powerpoint slide and move on to other, less important, material. Examples of such lecturers/courses are Paulo Falcone with his Modeling and Simulation and Balazs Kulcar in Linear Control System Design. Please forward these complaints to Knut Åkesson, the head of the Mpsys masters program.» (Excellent)

14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- Projects.»
- The grading system. If you work hard during the quarter (projects and home exercises), you practically pass the course. I like this method.»
- the teaching in class...It was very comprehensive»
- The projects were nice, although too much was given, in my opinion»
- Project works.»
- projects and tutorials»
- Projects are good, worth the time.»
- The projects. Working with the DSP.»
- Nothing»
- The point system»
- The projects are really good.»
- The handouts»
- project»
- E-Studio Sessions»
- This kind of learing is good with handins and projects»
- The open lab was a good way to explore the theory. »
- the oral exams helped a lot»
- Projects in their current forum»
- Projects and hand-ins as they"re excellent tools for learning.»
- the hand ins»
- I liked the "Adaptive Filter-Project". I like the fact that you actually can hear when your algorithm works.»
- The projects.»
- The laborations»
- The project works which are really interesting»
- The material. »
- the projects»
- The lab sessions.»
- Everything»
- Laboration but I would have liked it more if we had some lab assistant in the lab at some specific time during the time we do the measurements so that we can be guided or given some suggestions »
- Tomas McKelvey»
- Most of it, but it is very demanding»
- The lectures, labs and HIPs.»
- The lab sessions, the extra home assignments.»

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Exercises could be more challenging, to get you learning things for exam earlier.»
- To have more exercises and problems (studio sessions) would be better. »
- The points the reports get should be higher....the passing point should change to 50 and the reports should have equivalent value with the oral exam.»
- Scheduled computer sessions not really necessary. Could be done at home. »
- Felt like the lectures could be improved a little bit - nothing serious just would have liked a somewhat "firmer" lectures. »
- More useful tutorials, I didn"t learn anything that was closely related to the course material. The first one was on the z transform, the third on the probability theory.... I didn"t need that at all...»
- maybe explaining more what are the expectations od the oral exam»
- HIP 1-3: Would learn alot more if I was allowed to work in groups of 2-3 students. Dialog among fellow students should not be something bad.»
- It would also be good if the format of the hand-ins could be changed from paper to e-mail.»
- The one who gives the lecture.»
- Courses and tutorials should be more concentrated on understanding.»
- Either project or hand-ins, not both of them»
- tutoril can be associate with the lecture contents. lecture slide should be handed out before the class.»
- Project, and the oral examination of the project»
- The last project should not be so close to the week of examins since you don"t have time to concentrate on the examins. It should be easier to get help. »
- Clearer instructions on what is requested from the project reports»
- Ingemar Andersson! And his way of answering questions. More tutorials.»
- the time for grading/feedback of the hand in problems and the projects.»
- Reduce the number of reports that should be handed in.»
- It would be useful with more comments on the corrected home assignments. It"s hard to know what your error is if you only get the number of points.»
- More explanations about the project and more help in order to it better. Not that much work alone, because the solutions of them are not so strightforward. I don‘,t think the tutorial sessions are so necessary. Maybe if they were more correlated with the teory it could be better.»
- How long time the students have to solve the exercises (need more time)»
- Less hand-in assignments. »
- Nothing, maybe no book.»
- Grading in the projects should be more transparent. No reason was given for missing points in the project reports.»
- The OFDM projects first part is rather hard to understand since some people have not even heard what it is and its quite hard to understand how it works and what it"s about from the theory part of the instructions »
- Time for questions in thefirst project, extra songs in the lab»

16. Additional comments

- The oral examinations consists of too large amount of points, and the hand-in"s too small. »
- I felt the grading for the project reports and oral exams were not entirely fair. Our group got as good score as friends groups, but I got a good impression that they performed better on the exams and wrote better reports. We were not a full group, so maybe the grading was nicer, but tasted bittersweet, nevertheless.»
- The Lecture notes are very well structured and highly usefull but they often contain spelling errors. »
- Nothing.»
- I got a negative impression of this course because of it felt like nobody wanted to learn us anything. We just kept on working and working and when we asked questions nobody wanted or were willing to explain anything.»
- I think the rules about the home assignments are strange. The way they are formulated now it seems like it"s not allowed to discuss the problems at all with other students and I think this lowers the learning value. In most other courses students are encouraged to work together with home assignments.»
- You should get closer to the divisions of Vehicle Safety and Vehicle Engineering and Autonomous Systems. With the development of active and integrated safety, mechanical eng. need to get stronger in signal processing and this course perfectly fits this purpose. That"s why I took it. »
- Students without a signal processing background should are not given the chance to work with exam level exercises and it is difficult for them to achieve high exam scores.A set of such exercise should be handed out so students can work on it on their one and ask questions to some assistant or professor»
