Goals and goal fulfilment

The programme syllabus states the goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the education. The learning outcomes are (excerpts):

After the master programme in Applied Mechanics the students should be able to

-formulate mechanical engineering problems as mathematical models.

-use advanced topics regarding mathematical modelling as well as computational and experimental techniques relevant for the specialized tracks.

-show insight and ability to work in teams and collaborate in groups with different compositions.

-be able to give written and oral presentations of their conclusions and knowledge to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

5. How understandable are the programme goals?

Programme layout

The masters programme in Applied Mechanics consists of four compulsory corses in the first two quarters (Mechanics of solids, Mechanics of fluids, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), Structural dynamics) and the compulsory courses "Finite element method - structures" and "Project course" in quarter three and four.

7. What do you think of the programme layout?

- I have heard that in previous years the program was different for different divisions. I think students should have the option to choose between courses specifically for one division or a mixture of courses as it is now.» (Rather poor)
- Just don"t let the solid mechanics guys take over the program. That"s the feeling I"ve got. More and more solid stuff, which may be downright uninterresting to some. » (OK)
- The structural dynamics corse schod be repalced by the corse rigid body motion» (OK)
- the course rigid body dynamics which only contains topics tha already have been introduced and used in previous courses within the solids specialization should definitely be held earlier in the masters programe. In my opinion it might suit better to change place with the composite mechanics course in the spring of year one. Othewise the structure of mandatory courses within both solids and fluids seems good.» (Good)

8. Do you miss a course or a topic in the master programme?

21 svarande

Yes»4 19%
No»17 80%

Genomsnitt: 1.8

- advanced heat transfer» (Yes)
- Maybe the use of commercial software in FEM.» (Yes)
- I miss a hands-on course in FEM and CFD software, I think it would be a good idea to have a course where the students perform simple simulation tasks in several commersial codes (without help, this way the student learn how to find, read and understand a software manual as well as to google and find answers of how others have solved simular problems on ex forums). After all, this is what most student will work with in the coming years and according to my experience it is a severe disadvantage when applying for a job, not knowing anything about common softwares. Another problem is meshing (both FEM and CFD), I dont think graduate students have enough knowledge and experience in how to create a high quality mesh (and how fine or coarse is ok/ element shape criterias(e.i maximum corner angles/), what kind (tri-hex-polyhedral/solid-shell) of mesh to use and where? why? what will happen in the future? what are we aiming for? I think these two subjects are of greatest importance and they should not be foreseen. Could maybe be solved as a common course "Commersial Simulation-software and Meshing" ? This course should be mandatory.» (Yes)
- More focus on using commercial software would have been nice.» (Yes)
- Maybe some experimental course on the fluid track» (No)
- Since we canchoose also courses from other departments, I dont really miss a course.» (No)
- A particular topic no, but more freedom to choose courses would be a great improvement.» (No)
- not reely however some subjects could be further extended, in general i woul say that many courses misses "real life" examples or problems.» (No)

9. Are there any courses that you think should either be heavily revised or even removed from the programme?

No»11 57%

- Mechanics of solids and fluids as two separate courses. They have to merge.» (Yes)
- The project course should be revised.» (Yes)
- The lecturers of FEM solids should make sure all course material is finished before giving the course next year. There should be an compulsory exam in the Model Validation course otherwise grade 5 is handed out as if it is worth nothing. In the Project Course there should be an supervisor for the EMA part as well, not only to the fluid and solid parts of the project.» (Yes)
- Multiphase flow.» (Yes)
- The project course. The idea is good but I didn"t feel that I learnt much during the course.» (Yes)
- not whole courses jus the order of them, see above.» (Yes)
- Structural dynamics - Control» (Yes)
- the prodject corse » (Yes)

Information about programme layout, specialisations, elective courses, theses, PhD studies.

Matrisfråga

- PhD studies has only been presented once, in a small time slot in the theses presentation evening where 100+ persons were crammed into a room for ~40 persons. Good job Lennart!»
- Either there aren"t that many PhD positions or the information isn"t being disseminated well.»
- The only information about the master thesis was given after school hours and with short notice, meaning that those who couldn"t attend this occasion did not get any information at all. I have had to figure everything out myself when starting my thesis work. »
- the information meeting about mastertheses was a disaster, there was not enough time for everybody to talk and definitely not enough time afterwards.»

- I think this is the best choice for future work in the field of mechanical engineering.» (Yes)

- It depends on which other choices I would have!» (I do not know)
- Depends on how successful I will be in finding a job afterwards. As an intellectual experience, it hasn"t been satisfying.» (I do not know)

26. What should definitely be preserved?

- the course subjects in fluid dynamics (as my major) are pretty well chosen. The study climate.»
- The ability to chose between three predetermined tracks (or sets of courses). »
- The courses are excellent.»
- The friendly environment.»
- The teachers!»
- MATLAB, the level of competense needed»
- the mandatory courses from both fluids and solids specialization.»
- I think the general outlook is good.»
- The availability to get help from teachers and assistants»
- most of teh corses»

27. What should definitely be changed?

- the system of 4 quarter studies. the mixture of solid and fluid as a mandatory rule.»
- The required prerequisites for people from other master program should be higher. Many other master programs has their own private study rooms which is something that Applied Mechanics should try to get. I feel sorry for the foreign students that comes here and then has to share rooms with the disrespectful students of Maskinteknik 1, 2 och 3. I seriously cannot believe that the people of the Applied Mechanics administration would invite students from other foreign countries or even other Swedish universities to come and study in these dreadful conditions. All foreign students show excellent behavior and are very polite and respectful and are treated with almost the complete opposite behavior form the bachelor students of Maskinteknik. Therefore study rooms only accessible for students of Applied Mechanics are much needed. This would also give an "Applied-Mechanics-class/group-feeling" which there is absolutely none today.»
- Basic english (and pedagogic) course for all lecturers.»
- The layup for the autumn semester in the second year is not very good. Putting two compulsory elective courses in each study period is obstructive if you are in fact planning to begin with your master"s thesis. I have been studying abroad and will count for two courses (in total 15 ECT) of those I studied there. I"m planning to count them instead of the freely selectable that I have been taking here during this autum. My point is that if my two profile courses during this autumn were in the same study period I would be working on my master"s thesis at the moment. I believe the present system is rather rigid.»
- Tutoring should be more engaging. More elective courses should be offered. More interaction between faculty and students.»
- Try not having only one day between the exams. But if that can"t be changed try at least to have it at the end of the exam week. One can"t finish the hand-in assignments and also have enough time to studdy for both exams.»
- the rigid body dynamics should be heald earlyer otherwise it could as well be removed, the ema part of the project course, it was identical to many parts of the structural dynamics- model validation course and was therefore just a waste of time.»
- Just watch out so it doesn"t end up beeing too much solid stuff.»
- Structural dynamics - Control should be changed.»
- the prodject cores and the structural dynamics corsse shod switch plase with riged body motion and the structural dynamics corse shod take more advantage of the rigid body corse»

28. Additional comments

- I feel that the courses in the Applied Mechanics masters program that are open for people from other programs to take are way to adopted form them. The courses in the masters program Applied Mechanics should be tailored to fit the students of the Applied Mechanics which they certainly has not been. In almost every single course given after the first study period the level of education could have been so much higher if the knowledge from the previous courses in the masters program would have been used as a foundation. But this has not been the case. Many, many times has material from previous courses been repeated but at a lower level because of the fact that students from other programs has not taken these courses. »
- The assistens in some courses should be more prepared and able to help the students »
- I my self and many other students fell that tehr is hard to finde a good rom to wotk in. ther for a spesely asign room for the aplied mecanins master students whod be good it will also renforge the coperation betwne students. »
