Goals and goal fulfilment

The programme syllabus states the goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the education. The learning outcomes are (excerpts):

After the master programme in Automotive Engineering the students should be able to

•,,,,,,,, identify and discuss vehicles as complex systems from a technical and a social perspective through a broad platform in automotive engineering.

•,,,,,,,, analyse new technical challenges and to create technical advancements in the automotive industry by three specialisation tracks, Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics or Safety.

•,,,,,,,, synthesize and evaluate automotive systems and products in terms of direct use and lifecycle analysis through consideration of environmental and economic aspects.

•,,,,,,,, through applications and practice
o utilize automotive related IT- and product development tools.
o demonstrate skills necessary for managing and contributing to team-based engineering activities and projects in a multi-cultural environment.

Genomsnitt: 2.73

- I think we should highen them up, so much more may be taught!» (No, the goals are a bit too low)
- But i think more focus should have been put on programming (ECU, and such..). we, as automotive engineers, need more "programming skills", as that is what the market now wants...» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)

Programme layout

The Automotive Engineering programme consists of one introduction course about automotive vehicles and industry followed by 3 courses, one from each of the areas of Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics and Safety. Last two mandatory courses are chosen from 2 of the 3 areas. Depending on preferences, the student can then take two extra courses within one or two of the specialisations.

7. What do you think of the programme layout?

- I feel there should be more indepth courses in one specialization(if the students know what they want to do).More courses in applied mechanics and system control mechatronics should be allowed for automotive students or combined special courses tailor made for Automotive program.( Eg. Mechanics and control & simulations). The Automotive programe in more Powertrain oriented rather than Vehicle dynamics or safety which offers only two courses for the whole program. Also the courses assume a lot of pre-requisites for vehicle dyanamics courses( even when discussed with Chalmers Bachelor students).More freedom should be allowed for elective courses.» (Rather poor)
- I like that you get to try the three different tracks before choosing one of them.» (Good)
- Personally, i would like to see more safety oriented courses, not only the stone-age combustion engines...» (Good)
- Maybe make the aero course also mandatory...?» (Good)
- Excellent programme» (Very good)

8. Do the mandatory courses cover the main topics that you believe an Automotive Engineer should know?

These courses are Internal combustion engines, Engineering of automotive systems, Vehicle dynamics, Vehicle and traffic safety.

- Yes, they give a good introduction for the different tracks.» (To some extent)
- I think there ought to be some mandatory part about transmissions and power transfer.» (To some extent)
- Transmission is not covered. » (To some extent)
- It covers the basics. » (To some extent)
- More practical or laboratory work is missing.» (To a large extent, but not completely)
- Dynamics Modelling and simulation courses should also be introduced. » (Yes definitely)
- Maybe some ergonomics intro and production techniques for automotive engineering could be taught as well (platform sharing, etc.)» (Yes definitely)
- Those offer a good base knowledge.. so that we can understand different areas.» (Yes definitely)

9. Do you miss a course or a topic in the master programme?

23 svarande

Yes»9 39%
No»14 60%

Genomsnitt: 1.6

- A course in applied control theory for vehicle dynamics. » (Yes)
- A introductory course (mixed)on Simulations,Mechanics,Modelling of dynamical systems & control, which are the main focus of any engineering area ( nowadays). This would help the students to focus on core engineering area rather than spending time of assignments on learning the softwares and tools and simulation basics( if the basic ideology is introduced earlier).» (Yes)
- Active safety was shut down, but conducting my thesis work at Autoliv, it looks like it"s needed.» (Yes)
- Can"t pick anyone in particular but more safety in general. I took all safety courses that was offered, i.e. 4 courses. I want more.» (Yes)
- More practical or laboratory work is missing.» (Yes)
- - Advanced Hybrid Technology » (Yes)
- Advanced aerodynamics, Applied CFD (using commercial code)» (Yes)
- Advanced Vehicle Aerodynamics» (Yes)
- I have this weired idea. Chalmers should tie up with Karting in gothenburg and have a short session there to attract people and to make course more interesting.» (No)

10. Are there any courses that you think should either be heavily revised or even removed from the programme?

23 svarande

Yes»10 43%
No»13 56%

Genomsnitt: 1.56

- - Automotive engineering system: it was NOT at masters/advanced level, and the time could be used for a more advanced course.» (Yes)
- I feel more freedom should be given to choose the courses from other program as well.Or a combined course from other dept(control and applied mechanics)should be introduced.» (Yes)
- heaviy revised -Vehicle dynamics - see comments above. Doesnt seem like this course can be handeled Quaterly.Diluting the course content is not defenitely an option» (Yes)
- The EAS and ICE courses contain really redundant assignments regarding powertrain.» (Yes)
- Vehicle Dynamics course was really botched. The advanced course in the same topic was far really better. The basic course needs to be improved.» (Yes)
- The vehicle dynamics course could be much better, what we are suppose to learn for the exam is not taught during the lectures! Learn from the Advanced course.» (Yes)
- Both safety courses» (Yes)
- The vehicle dynamics courses should be looked through. The basic vehicle dynamics course especially I think discouraged people to take the advanced course. The second course is good but the assignments still take up too much time.» (Yes)
- The layout of the safety course wasn"t good, and the lectures in the vehicle dynamics course was really bad.» (Yes)

- If we talk about only RVD and AVD courses, I would say Very good for every points. The Vehicle Dynamics was really not well led. Needs some improvements. Especially about "teachers in this specialisation".»
- The Dynamics course had poor teaching. The Aerodynamics course was not about vehicle dynamics. The good course was advanced dynamics. Rigid Body dynamics should be taugth before the advanced course since we are suppose to know stuff from it that we don´,t know such as rotational matrices! »
- Aerodynamics course could be more focusing on problems of today, not so much old cars.»

14. What is your impression of the automotive project courses: Automotive Engineering Project and Chalmers Formula Student?

Please comment your answer!

Matrisfråga

- Felt like we were mostly working on our own and setting our own goals. Clearer definitions of what is part of the course and what should be submitted is needed.»
- The AEP project did not live up to my expectations at all!»
- Awesome experiences, wonderful. A lot to learn, such a brillant opportunity. +++ !»
- My project was awesome so was my supervisor. But the structure of the project between the upper layer (Malin) and the lower layer (the actual work) needs to be clearer and improved.»
- Excellent opportunity for team interaction and project management learning.»
- Was supposed to be an alternative to the former course in Advanced Aerodynamics. Unfortunately it turned out to be one period of project management and one period of struggling with a software that only one person at the department was familiar with and this person was located another company --> not easy to get help.»
- Formula Student is the best course I"ve ever taken. I chose to take the Automotive Engineering Project course (World Solar Challenge) as an alternative to the advanced road vehicle dynamics course. The project had potential but the supervision was really bad. »

- No freedom to choose courses due to mandatory courses( This is my opinion).Fresh students may not have idea on this.»
- went too late, do it earlier.»
- Attended the information presentation about available master thesis... However, they were only looking for engineers from applied mechanics, atleast according to thesis tasks... I feel it has been hard to find thesis for the automotive engineers. I managed to find a thesis in the last minute through a contact person.»
- More information on available master thesis and future PhD studies is needed.»
- Very good with a "Thesis seminar" but unfortunately it felt like it was almost only for Applied mechanics and not so much Automotive Engineering.»

29. What should definitely be changed?

- More information to the students!»
- - The program ought to be aiming higher, such as the BSc (Maskinteknik). - Cooperation with the Applied Mechanics program in some courses, so that further PhD studies would be enabled.»
- Special track courses should be added in vehicle dynamics.More freedom to choose elective courses rather than mandatory courses to improve the basics and new thinking.»
- This Question.»
- Communicate about safety towards other programmes (MPSYS for instance), same for the Automotive Eng Project.»
- no idea»
- VEHICLE DYNAMICS, Basic Course»
- More practical work.»
- The Dynamics course. Rigid Body Dynamics should be fitted so that people could read it before the Advance course.»
- Add an applied CFD course.»
- Vehicle dynamic is still a very difficult course...»
- Take back the advanced road vehicle aerodynamics course.»
- The Vehicle Dynamics course»

30. Additional comments

- A mixed course on Rigid body dynamics,ODE,simulation and control are needed for the automotive students( especially Vehicle dynamics) to start thinking on the current industry perspective and apply basic knowledge.Instead more time is spent to understand the relation among these areas or the realization comes later in the programme.»
- There should be more visits to different companies within the industry by the programme. Lunch lectures are not that good, a study visit to companies are better!»
