Your own effort

1. How many hours per week did you spend on this course?

We mean total time, that is, it comprises the time you spent in class and the time you spent on your own work. Try to estimate the average time over the entire study period.

27 svarande

At most 15 hours/week»4 14%
Around 20 hours/week»10 37%
Around 25 hours/week»8 29%
Around 30 hours/week»4 14%
At least 35 hours/week»1 3%

- I tried to read the book. Most of the chapters I read it twice or more. But it"s difficult to understand everything since it is quite new for me and I don"t have any backgrounds from electric power. The chapters I read the first weeks I"ve already forgot it later. There should be more consulting time for exercise where one can try to solve the problem by oneself. Not only where the supervisor is going through everything on the black board. I didn"t follow everything he did.» (Around 20 hours/week)
- I set a specific time per course, so, I did not have time to cover all material of the course.» (Around 20 hours/week)
- Would have been good to have more home assignments. » (Around 25 hours/week)

- I decided to stop attending classes at some point, because the qualitiy of the lectures was very poor (see below). » (75%)
- missed beginning due to health issues.» (75%)
- I think the computer lab could be better. I felt that I wasted a lot of time by just trying to make an electric power system to work. For so many hours of computer lab, I didn"t learn that much from it. I mean instead we could use that time to actually learn something. Like having exercise/consulting for example. Moreover, there were many things that the teachers could have informed us in the beginning of the lab exercise. Now, everybody is sitting there waiting for help and wasting our time, probably everyone has the same question. I would suggest that they state it in the project instruction or go through it for everybody at the same time in the very beginning.» (100%)
- Very confusing lectures. Maby stick to either only black board with more structure or only powerpoint slides. » (100%)

Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

3. How understandable are the course goals?

26 svarande

I have not seen/read the goals»3 11%
The goals are difficult to understand»0 0%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»10 38%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»13 50%

Genomsnitt: 3.26

- they were presented to us and in the end of the course I kind of understood what they meant.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)
- The Theoretical part was a bit difficult to understand what one should have learned from the course» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)
- Though I"m not completely sure of them still, it is a good idea to link them here by the question next time.» (The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn)

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

23 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»1 4%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»20 86%
No, the goals are set too high»2 8%

Genomsnitt: 2.04

- The goals seems reasonable. But as I said berfore. For me who don"t have the right background might need more exercises.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- "The course will start from fundamental basic concepts of the physics of electricity." This is true, but even though most calculations were not very difficult to perform it is very hard to understand the meaning of the calculations e.g. in the case of a 3 phase AC system if you have never dealt with these kind of problems before. Basic concepts of electricity are treated, but very very fast. "This course is addressed to students without a background in electrical engineering." This might be true, but it is very hard to follow the calculations if you have never performed similar ones during previous classes. » (No, the goals are set too high)
- it says that no knowledge in electric power are needed, but i think it would be very hard for a student who don"t know anything about circuits before to catch up» (No, the goals are set too high)

5. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

23 svarande

No, not at all»0 0%
To some extent»11 47%
Yes, definitely»11 47%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»1 4%

Genomsnitt: 2.56

- I think it"s wrong to spend so little time in the course on pricing but have so many points on the subject in the exam. If pricing is that important, then cut back on the computer lab (or remove it completely) and spend more time on pricing. At least it could be introduced earlier in the course. » (To some extent)
- i think that the theory part was a bit blurry, a lot questions was very precise and i asked my self whether it was relevant to the course.. but i guess thats up to the examiner to decide» (To some extent)

- The lectures of Prof. Bertling were very poor. It seemed she was not well prepared. It was hard to follow her explainations because she changed topics very often during her sentences. » (Small extent)
- Personally I would like less information in each slide since it"s packed with text. One gets tired just by looking at them.» (Some extent)
- The lectures with Lina was hard to follow she was talking about one thing and then a second later about something else. But her enthusiasm over the subject really rubbed off on me. Pramods lectures was really good, he really knew how to explain things. One of the best excercise teachers I"ve had at Chalmers.» (Large extent)
- The tutorials were the biggest help for my learning as all the topics have been explained really good and all the questions have been answered. The lessons could have been more useful if there had not been that much information on the slides. Fewer points but those therefore discussed and explained would have been better than a lot of points, but only briefly mentioned.» (Large extent)
- Lectures and calculations with Pramod has been really good! Pramod is very helpful and good at explaining! I do not feel that the computer-lab assistants was nice nor helpful. The American guy who had the practical lab was very good though!» (Large extent)

- The book was good. What was not told in the lectures could be found in the book. » (Some extent)
- For the theoretical part we don"t have any course litterature for that. Only some slides from the lecture, which I don"t think is enough. I mean if one happens to miss a lecture then there"s nowhere you can find material for that part. Even if I attended every single lecture I still need litterature/ more material to go back to for repetition. » (Some extent)
- Almost all of the fundamentals discussed during the lectures had to be looked up in the course book because the lectures were of an unsufficient quality. The course book was a great help for my studies. The lecture slides were of no use at all. The tutorial handouts and solutions were of a very good quality, with detailled explainations. » (Some extent)
- The tutorial handouts were great, and concentrated enough» (Some extent)
- The explanation text, given in handouts on calculation exercises, describing the theory behind the calculations have been very helpful.» (Large extent)
- Very good handouts with the exercises!» (Large extent)
- The hand outs from the excercises has been great, excellent descriptions.» (Great extent)
- The book was a big help for understanding.» (Great extent)

- There were alot of corrections on the handouts for the exercises which were confusing.» (Rather badly)
- Difficult to see how the exersices where organized.» (Rather badly)
- It would be great if there was extra material for the theoretical part of the course. Since only the slides are not enough. The slides just contains some key words and there are poor explanations.» (Rather well)
- it was good that power points were handed out. » (Rather well)
- Most very well, but the computer project was not at all. These instructions need to be reconsidered if used another year» (Rather well)
- Sometimes not everything was printed out or there were some mistakes in the handouts, but that was not a problem at all. » (Very well)

9. What do you think about the laboratory work?

Matrisfråga

- The computer lab was like trying to work with something even though you don"t know what to do at all. The information wasn"t that good and sometimes inaccurate. We spent a lot of unnessecary time on this project to re-do things when the information came too late. »
I would suggest that they state it in the project instruction or go through it for everybody at the same time in the very beginning.»
- The computer lab was quite interesting, but the tasks to perform are very unspecified. It is rather disappointing to write a report about a solution you found completely random by trial and error, struggeling with the crashes of the program. The idea of including this computer lab is very good, but I think the tasks should be re-designed in some way. The experimental lab was very very good, the talk to the supervisors was very helpful for understanding the properties of electicity. »
- The computer lab was a big waste of time. I learned nothing but wasted a hole lot of hours.»
- These both lab´,s gave you more in depth view over the electrical installations.»
- The conputer lab was not well prepared and it basicly didn"t give you any understanding of power systems, it was quite the opposite, it made you more confused. There were alot of faults in the pm too which was the only thing you had as a guide. Maby a larger and better tutorial in the begginging of the project would be a good idea so that you can handel the program better.»
- Really bad that the teachers didn"t know what was asked in the task. we had to re do our project because of this.»
- the experimental lab was good for thinking about the topics and get a chance to discuss them in more detail. The computer lab and especially the tasks in it sounded really interesting in the beginning, but unfortunately we did not learn a lot from the expected matter. Most students were not sure about how to reacht the goals, there was no methodology introduced or tips how the programme could be used in an efficient way. A little talk in the beginning of each lab would have been great, explaining different steps we should do or mistakes we should avoid. NOw every group had to ask a lot of questions and as the teachers took a lot of time to answer one groups questions others sometimes had to wait very long to efficiently continue their work. in my opinion we could have learnt a lot more from that computer lab if the way how the work should be done and questions to the subject would have been discussed a bit more. »
- Use a better program than power world!! It"s better to use a program that works than the possibility to have it on your own computer.»
- Computer lab could be clearer. The point of it is good, but it was too time consuming to figure out the instructions and get the computer program to work»
- The computer lab is too time consuming, specially with not helpful instructors. Did they even understand that we had not used the program before? It some times felt as if they tried to trick us into doing unnecessary mistakes!»

- The thing that brings this course down are the unstructured lectures and the bad computer lab.» (Poor)
- The goals set were very basic and the course content had things which are not related to the course goals. The lectures except for a couple of them were absolutely not useful at all. the exercise classes were really useful.» (Fair)
- To state that again: The main lecturer, Prof. Bertling, was not able to perform an adequate standard of teaching. The rest of the course (other lecturers, exercises) was of a good quality. But the total impression is rather poor than good, because of the issues with the lectures. » (Fair)
- With some minor changes, I guess the course can be very good.» (Good)
- The goals in the courses and the content is really good but it is not always easy for the students to learn the things from it that would be expected» (Good)
- It was much better than i expected. Started from real lo level to high so everyone got the chance to understand.» (Excellent)

17. What are main strengths of the course according to you?

- That we learn what we need to know about the electrical power system and not more than that. It was interesting and helped me see what role electricity has in the energy system and what the implications of introducing renewables is. »
- The excercises were good, very good. It was possible to ask questions. »
- Tutorial sessions»
- The tutorials and the experimental lab were very good. Although there was a lot (!) of information during the tutorials Pramod explained everything in very much detail and made it as understandable as possible for most of the students. Why was Chris Saunders no longer involved in the lectures? His explainations during the experimental lab were very helpful, he should do some of the lectures as in the previous year. »
- That it gives an overview of the subject and an understanding of possible problems in the grid in the future.»
- After attending this course, I really have an understanding of electricity and how a distribution system works.»
- transmission. difference AC/DC»
- The part which I think was the best were about how a sustainable electrical system works and how we could get there. »
- the tutorial!!»
- teachers were very helpful, some interesting point were dealt»
- A god mix of content»
- The tutorials!»
- Important topic for our program. Lina is very inspiring! »

18. What are your suggestions for improvements for next year?

- Less information per slide. And maybe some more exercises one can practice on.»
- For lina to really think through what she wants to tell us during the lecture. A little bit more structure would help. »
- Better introduction for the computer lab and more material for the theoretical part.»
- There were a lot of different steps and new concepts in the calculations. Could"ve made it clearer when we went from one type of calculations to another, that is, make it easier to the practical reasons to why we want to use Newton-Raphs or why and when we want to perform calculations with the help of the per unit system. It is important to be clear with so many new concepts. It should be concluded somewhere what parts of the course that we don"t need to care about in the examination, other than that it is mentioned in the excercises. For example that we don"t need to be able to calculate with la place or be able to derive some of the quations. The lectures and the lecture-slides can be improved. To much information on many of the slides. Only ends up in confusion and makes the lectures a waste of time. The lectures could be refering more to the things that we learn during excercise, i.e. when talking about control systems using newton-raphson or when talking about transformers. Now it almost felt like two different courses. Put a bit more effort into explaining the reactive power in an early stage. The computer excercise has a lot of improvement-potential. The used tutorial didn"t provide enough knowledge to do the assignment. For example we had no idea that e should or how to check the pu-values for the voltage to make sure that the system was within the given limits under stable operation. A lot of the time went to testing and guessing and redoing for trivial reasons. With a better introduction of the program serveral lecture-occations could probably be removed. Shunt capacitors could be explained, and that we were supposed to use a negative load for the wind power. The excercise itself was good.»
- Try and relate lectures and tutorial session a bit more.»
- Change the main lecturer.»
- Perhaps there could be given some more calculations tasks than just these that are being calculated on the exercises so that students can try to solve a new task and not just recalculate tasks that has already been presented.»
- Smaller groups for Computer Lab. Better Intro in Computer Lab. Better explanations in the excercizes.»
- There is not much to change, but the computer lab. Fiver persons in each group is to much. Then there are always some in a big group like that who fall away and miss the context of the lab. But the lab itself is very interesting.»
- Revise the computer lab and add a better toutorial. Get a better structure on the lectures! »
- The teachers in the computer lab haft to know what is asked for in the project description. »
- change the programme of the computer lab and make it clear how results can be achieved»
- Change the computerlab. Use a better software, that is reliable!»
- more focus on sustainability, renewables etc... »
- Improve the computer lab! If you are keeping power world you should maybe create a better introduction to the program. »
- Tuesdays afternoon. maybe have computer lab instead of tutorial after the lecture. »
