- The course Material and slides are really terrific and there"s actually no need to attend the lectures to be able to understand and pass this course and my hat is off for that. Really superb material and a great course if you aren"t able to attend all lectures!» (25%)
- For some kind of reason, the voice tone of the lecturer combined with the usage of overhead slides is a very, very soothing combination. Due to this, I managed to fall asleep on all lectures but two, which naturally had a negative effect on the learning. » (75%)

- This course is probably one of the best I"ve taken since it"s so clear what you need to know and the material is very relevant.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- i have no idea because i haven"t checked the goals » (No, the goals are set too high)
- It felt like the course was aiming to give both a wide view and a deep view of databases, it got unrealistic to take in that much information and get something out of it. » (No, the goals are set too high)

- I would"ve needed at least one more hour to answer all questions on the exam, but apart from that everything was reasonable.» (Yes, definitely)
- The exam can"t be better. It"s perfect in all aspects in my opinion. A lot of courses on Chalmers should take a course from Broberg and Kemp so they too can have such high standards and great material.» (Yes, definitely)

- The webpage is not intuitive at all when it comes to material. Lecture notes are duplicated and can be accesible from both PingPong and an obscure link in the web page, but PDF"s content differs. The one used in lectures is in the obscure link» (Rather badly)
- Other courses usually uses only the course web page for information and Time edit to change the schedule (with either a link to time edit or a copy of it in some way in html with information on chapters/etc for each specific lecture). If there is any news it is supplied either as "news" on the web page or by email to all registered students (and I assume an email groups is available for all registered emails for each course). For this course there was a web page with all links available from the beginning, but the links was dead. If you haven"t uploaded the pdf"s yet, dont put the link up. It is frustrating to keep clicking on links for labs, exercises, exams etc which is not yet uploaded! Make the slides available before the lectures. What matter does it make if there is a quiz in the slide and the answer is available? I wouldn"t consider this cheating (since it has nothing to do with the exam) and isn"t it up to me as a student if I want to attend the quiz and think about the problem or just have a look at the answer? Ok, some people might answer correct the first time if they have read the answer, but if this happend just dont let them answer.. The time edit schedule was not updates (which is stupid, since I think a large amount of the students at Chalmers will add and sync the time edit schedule with their smart phones). Instead you need to check the web page to see if there is a lecture or not. It was very nice to have a lecture according to the schedule in my smart phone (which is synced with time edit) but not a lecture according to the schedule on the course web page. The google news group was a good idea since it is easy to ask questions etc. But I dont like that it was the only channel for news about the course. I still think that this should be handled the usual way, through the emails for each registered student. And the last thing, I am very impressed by the fact the exercise 7 (yes ok it there wasn"t an exercise like the previous one but anyway) is, by the date I"m writing this (7th of january) still not uploaded (so the link is dead)!» (Rather badly)

- Too little time for questions, lab leaders too busy.» (Very poor)
- Since the lecturer (Moa) clearly didn"t want to or couldn"t answer questions about the labs and Gabriele only had two hours of "office hours" this cannot be other than poor.» (Very poor)
- Getting a return on a hand-in is fine but when you correct the mistakes and make a second or third hand-in you don´,t want a fuzzy answer. I went to the laborations and asked what was wrong and still couldnt get a real answer until i turned to another examinator, then he explained what was wrong helped me and said that i could hand it in now -> five days later i get a return with what was almost the same things to correct. - This is by far the worst course I have taken during my four years at Chalmers. I think it is far from "Chalmers quality" and must have a huge change to next year. As it is right now, I would not recommend people to take it.» (Poor)
- Lectures need to be more dynamic and interesting, loose half of the OH and show some live action!» (Fair)
- A really good subject. » (Adequate)
- I think it was very interesting.» (Good)
- It"s nice to have several exercice sessions and lab each week. If we cannot attend one, we can just go to another one.» (Good)
- The exam was very hard compared to the previous moments in the course.» (Good)
- Good examiner and good TA"s » (Excellent)
- The course is close to perfect. I"ve seen a lot of courses on Chalmers and to be frank, most of them lack in many areas like, exercises, reading material and helpful examples before the exam, the latter being the most serious but this course has it all. You feel like you understand the labs and when you get to the exam you are prepared and when you see the exam you"re not surprised to the point that you"re thinking you"ve come to the wrong exam. It really was a joy to take this course. This is one of the few courses on Chalmers I can recommend to everybody.» (Excellent)

16. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- The course layout in general.»
- Really good lectures - great teacher!»
- Everything.»

17. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Perhaps make the lectures a bit more energetic or up the tempo. Another suggestion would be to use the drawing board for examples which makes it easier when taking notes during lectures.»
- The exam was very long, maybe make it a bit shorter?»
- The labs caused possibly too much work, at least with the short time between each deadline.»
- It would be preferable if the lab assignments resembled the questions on the exam in difficulty. The assignments were much less complex.»
- Best course ever »
- Very uninspiring lectures. Less reading from slides and more interaction and real examples would be good.»
- Lectures need more live coding and less static OH.»
- The quizzes asked at the lectures, most likely were not solved at the lecture handouts.»
- No book! It"s not so difficult to prepare lecture papers»
- getting feedback for the labs should not take more than 4 work days. It was hard to continue with the next lab because we were waiting for the feedback.»
- Perhaps if exercises could be more like tutorials and less own study if there are no better rooms avaible.»
- More handledare»
- Nothing that I can think of »
- More about how to calculate for example BCN on the classes and not only in the tutorials»
- That the supervisors are faster to reject or accept our labs so we don"t have to wait almost a week for an answer»
- The slides, change them into something more interactive. Do some live programming with a computer and do live examples»
- Everything!! Either change lecturer or be more prepared for the lectures. It felt like Moa either wasn"t prepared or didnt really know what she was talking about. Clearly she does know what she is talking about (because of her research?), so it must be about beeing prepared. For the most of the time it felt like she only said the same things as the text on the slides and nothing more. And stop jumping between pages in the slide! It is really confusing then you jump between different pages and OFTEN jumps to the wrong page! Also not impressed by Gabriele. Talking very low (and often when facing the black board) and it felt like the it was more of a burden for him to have the exercise than to see it as a good oportunity to teach people new things. FOr the last exercise he asked (on the google group) if there was any proposals for exercises. Two things came up, KeY hoare logic by hand and finding loop invariants. Realle good idea to take the loop invariant to fibonacci, since it was "really hard to understand this" by Gabriele. Wouldn"t it been better to make easier examples? Maybe one that didnt take two hours to explain? The labs was bad in so many levels. First of there was often unclear what the exercises in the labs was about (what I as a student was supposed to do/solve). Second, I would say that the labs is to advanced/hard (well, at least lab3) to be in this course since this course is considered to be a "entry level" (or whatever the correct english phrase would be, svenska: "Grundnivå") and no there was no supervised labs. Since there exists an advanced course, I would prefer that the labs on this was more about test cases (the first one) but more advanced and with more tools. Something like implementing test cases for more advanced code and use tools like EMMA for code coverage (was EMMA even metioned in the course?), automated build and test tools (Jenkins) etc. What I mean is something that could be useful without the advanced course. The level of the first and second lab was ok, even if I dont understand what to use JML for (is there any software development company that uses this? it feels like it takes up to much time to be worth it). I think the JML lab would have been more useful if lab 3, "Key hoare-things", was replaced with a lab about automated test case generation (which is based on JML I think?). Is JML even that useful? Try to google it and see what results you get, it is almost only university search result so the impression I get is that it is not used by software companies (but really a favourite to teach on universities all over the world) 347,619 questions tagged with "Java", only 20 (total, not of those 357,619) questions tagged with "JML" at stackoverflow.com, these numbers make it feel like JML is not that hot/used/useful. But for the third lab: I dont think me and my study friends have ever been sitting to many people, so long time and still not understand anything about the lab or how to solve it. And I must say, it was great that the last "office hours" Gabriele had was moved to the day after deadline on this lab!. It feels like this lab and its technique is used in research and not by software companies in development. So finaly I would suggest: More labs with creating test cases for more complex code (more complex code to make sure you test all methods, all branches etc). Add different helpful tools such as EMMA, how to automate builds (like nightly builds) with integrated tests (the one you just wrote) by using tools like Jenkins, maybe different techniques to test different layers (instead of just saying that it is hard because it depends on OS, hardware etc). Labs with debugging. If there is lab with JML, the follow up lab should be about automated test case generation instead of proving correctness with KeyHoare(leave this for the advanced course). And most important of all, supervised labs. With the labs as they were for this course, with almost no opportunity to ask questions, the labs felt meaningless. »
- The location for the exercise session. Also, it would be good if it"s said before the exercise session how they are meant to be (that you work on the exercises there, not that the supervisor is not just going through the answears). Solutions to all exercises from the book would be good. The lectures might be a bit better and informational if there a more concrete examples. Maybe from real life databases?»
- Well, the lectures could preferrably be converted to powerpoints, maybe a little bit of color. Or more writing on the board. Because it is easy to almost fall asleep only listeing and watching very similar black-and-white overheads. If for example many slides needs to be shown at the same time, then maybe use overhead only for the additional slides and powerpoint for the rest.»
- I would suggest to include more on non-relational database models, e.g., NoSQL and big data, etc.»
- Didnt use the course literature but passed anyway.. Might look for something else? Since the labs where very good maybe even more of those, and more occasions for those.»
- Nothing »
- good as it is»
- Well, the examinators attending the laborations should at least be willing to help you. Hearing from classmates "take him, not him" is kind of discomforting knowing that "not him" is the one who corrects your hand-ins and the one you"re supposed to get help from initially. »
- Maybe give more examples of how to model a domain, the ISA relationship from the labs was quite difficult to figure out. »
- We sent in our labs in fire early but did not get a reply until after the second deadline and another time four hours before it - there has to be more graders! We got a rejection and could not send in a corrected version - since deadline had passed.»
- kursboken. för mycket text i den och svårt att hitta den information man söker.»
- Nothing.»
