Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning objectives.

3. How understandable are the course goals?

The goals are difficult to understand»3 17%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»5 29%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»6 35%

Genomsnitt: 2.82

- I read them but don"t remember.» (?)
- They are useless» (The goals are difficult to understand)
- The connection between learning outcomes and the aim is very unclear.» (The goals are difficult to understand)
- It was only in the goals that "how" the presentations should be held where. Make that more clear, very much more clear.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)
- The goals (learing outcome) of the course are clear, but some of them are more of reflections of some parts of the course rather than actual goals for learning outcome. » (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)
- However, the learning outcomes do not seem to be reasonable out of the course goals. » (The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn)

4. Are the course goals reasonable considering the number of credits?

- But skip this "reflecting part" and let us focus on the actual project for the customer!» (yes, I think so)

5. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

Please comment your impression of continuous examination during the course.

17 svarande

No, not at all»2 11%
To some extent»8 47%
Yes, definitely»4 23%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»3 17%

Genomsnitt: 2.47

- I guess you only read the report for assessing the collaboration in the group? » (To some extent)
- To have individual presentations might be good, but to spread it out during two weeks was a very bad idea. That forced us to hurry our work just to have a report to hand to the opponents. Many of the reports were not in such a state that is was meaningful to do a opposition. Please change this for next year!» (To some extent)
- Hard to improve. No feedback from the previous report and I guess there won"t be any this time either. So it is hard to know what was good/bad. Also, there seems to only be a focus on how to do the project and the report but nothing on the results (most important in real life?).» (To some extent)
- I hope we can get some feedback of the report from the supervisor» (Yes, definitely)

6. How do you rate the final seminars and the feedback from Claes and Bertil?

18 svarande

Poor»4 22%
Fair»2 11%
Adequate»2 11%
Good»5 27%
Excellent»5 27%

Genomsnitt: 3.27

- Experted relevant feedback. » (Poor)
- Claes and Bertil needs to work with how to approach people in a good way.» (Poor)
- I would have known what the actual outcome of the groups" projects were? Now I only heard them reflect about problems in their work...? Very strange! Since everyone had to present by themselves, this also affected the opposition in a bad way! I could get something out of the report, but since this was held very early, there were parts missing in the report...... We"ve been studying for four years. Do we really need this presentation practice? It should be something for the bachelor students?» (Poor)
- The feedback was partly given in an inappropriate way. Some things that were said should have been taken up in a personal feedback, not in front of all the group. There was personal critics brought in a way that might have hurt the feelings of some students. Bertil and especially Claes should pay more attention to the way of expressing negative feedback.» (Fair)
- Dificult to know what was expected and very hard to fit to the project, got the feeling one had to "Make a mountain out of a molehill".» (Fair)
- Claes feedback was good, even though I cant se the reason to examine our presentation technique in this type of course.» (Adequate)
- They sometimes became very critical (which is good of course) but did not follow that up with guidance to be better. They pointed with the whole arm what you should achieve. Not how to do it or with a acceptable motivation why it was wrong. Otherwise a good and learningfull concept.» (Adequate)
- I felt very uncomfortable when they criticized a fellow student. It wasn"t a very good presentation, but to give only negative criticism and not following up with many concrete suggestions and tips is unprofessional. The focus should instead be on HOW he/she should practice to give better presentations in the future. Of course Bertil and Claes are allowed to criticize, but please don"t just point out bad things and definitely not in front of an audience. My suggestion is that you schedule time for criticism individually, perhaps could the presenter then also get to see the film from the presentation. If not, you should at least consider the person receiving the criticism. At my seminar the person who were criticized looked like he/she wanted to disappear through the floor. Of course one should be able to receive hard criticism in front of audience. That might be a part of our future careers, but in my opinion this specific time it crossed the line.» (Good)
- Oral presentations are difficult and it"s good to get feedback from a professional» (Excellent)

- The content of the presentation changed when Claes presented it for us. Different messages from Claes and Bertil... Dates for hand-ins were changed etc.» (Poor)
- When lectures are not compulsory you should not need to find out critical information (how to present for Bertil and Claes) from your classmate (with a lot of confusion on what, how to present should be added). And no, it is not clear in the PM. Did not really need to use the PM at all.» (Poor)
- Course administration was not as good as it should be. Change in plan with the seminars was bad, requiring project groups to change plan and finish milestones earlier. It should be possible to stick to the plan made in the first period. Much confusion about the presentation, contradicting goals of Claes and Bertil? Should be clear for both before what and how has to be done.» (Fair)
- I still have not received results from my first delivery» (Fair)
- Look at the A2-tamplates, different versions of office shows different things.» (Fair)

- Sick and could not attend.» (Did not attend)

20. How to increase attendance?

The attendance were very low for many of the lectures e.g Intellectual property rights and career service. Can you give suggestion for how to increase the attendance?

- By not having any lectures attendance will be 100%»
- Som jag tidigare nämnde. Innehållet av lektionerna är helt orelevanta mot kursinnehållet...»
- Motivate why the lecture is important. Explain what shall be learned and how that is important for the project or the career. However, keep in mind that students should have the opportunity to decide on their own if they want to get the input of the lecture or not.»
- Make them mandatory. They are good and relevant for a production engineer.»
- Motivate why it is important. Try to really relate this to the PROJECT and do not have lectures because you "have to". Even though there is a difference between the school and companies, there has to be a clear link in between. Or, you can always be a dictator and have it compulsory... BUT, then you have to know you are only treating the symptoms not the actual cause. People can still be there but do something else and not listen. Is that better than not attending and work with the project report?»
- This is a project course and we often feel like we shouldn"t be sitting at lectures when we have work to do. I think the only way is to make them compulsory. If not all of them, then make 3 out of 5 compulsory.»
- The lectures have to be linked to the work during the course, and the examination! If you make the lectures mandatory, you are only addressing the symptoms, not the reason for the problems. Sadly, I can not see the connection between the course aim and the lectures, even though I have read the course PM. Therefore I have no suggestions to make the attendance of these lectures better. The lectures should be changed, or skipped.»
- I dont know actually why i did not attend. I guess it was because i wanted to finish the project report so i skip lectures to write the report. »
- Mandatory guest lectures»
- I think you could really need to listen to Claes. How to make a first impression is crucial and yeah, that what did it for me already in the first course. 2/4 hs first lecture was rubbish, I gave it another try, another try and one last try. Then I stopped going to the lectures because I can use my time better. One memorable crucial moment in the first lecture was that Bertil started out with long quotes from Donald Schöns book that we needed to read at the lecture. That set the tone for the whole course and everybody almost hated the book even before they open it for themselves.»

26. In retrospect what should be changed in the pre study course (IAR058) and this course (PPU170) for you to reach an even better end result?

- To not have a pre study course, and to not use any project model, »
- Point out at the beginning how important the problem definition is for all the following work and the outcome of the whole project.»
- Don"t have these lectures (or make them related to the projects). Don"t have this "presentation technique", this is something for the bachelor studets, have the opposition later so that the opponent has something to say, Don"t have the holiday in between. Do not use LIPS. Take away the reading of Donald Schön. »
- The group size should be smaller, and you should not have individual presentations that takes a lot of time from the project work.»
- Pre study did not give so much so i think decreasing hand ins and focus on project would be better.»
- I believe that both courses where ok»
- More investigating in the pre-study»
- add some topics of project management, more discussion about project development»

- It is very good to have a project like this. Gives important experience for the career. However organization could be better.» (Good)

29. What shoud be preserved for next year

What are your suggestions on what worked well and should be kept for next year and not lost in the continuous improvements?

- the open problems»
- Tänk igenom hela kursen. Hur ska ni få studenterna att lita på er och tycka det är roligt? Genom att ljuga förloras allt förtroende både till hela programmet och kursen. »
- - Career Service lecture - duration over 2 study periods - real industry problem»
- Company contacts!»
- The individual seminars. It is good that we can"t "hide" behind our group at the presentation. Some people do that throughout Chalmers.»
- The interaction with the companies.»
- Presentation with Claes and Bertil should definetely be kept»
- Presentation technique»
- add one more presentation technique lecture »

30. What should be changed to next year?

- Project model, lectures, should be gone. »
- No individual presentation! Takes away a lot of time to prepare the individual presentations - time that would be needed for the project, happening in an intense phase. Why can"t the group present as a whole? Or better: Why is the presentation necessary at all? Project is presented at the company anyway. And it should be ok to give the same grade to the whole group. Individual grades are not necessary, the work was done in cooperation anyway! Bertil needs to work on dealing with criticism. Gets very defensive and personal. Neutral discussion hardly possible.»
- Don"t have these lectures (or make them related to the projects). Don"t have this "presentation technique", this is something for the bachelor studets, have the opposition later so that the opponent has something to say. Don"t have the holiday in between. Do not use LIPS. Take away the reading of Donald Schön. Try to have smaller groups.»
- The reflective practitioner book. Change it to something newer and easier to read. »
- The oral presentations. Is it really necessary to examine our oral presentation skills? What has that to do with our work in the project. Review the contents of each lecture and make sure it is motivated by the aims of the course.»
- Mandatory guest lectures»
- the Lips document and blanket seems more suitable for product development. maybe adjusting them for this course.»

34. Additional comments

- I felt like i had to do extra more because the others did not care as much and they did not do the parts they were supposed to do. In the end will get same results although I wrote 90 % of the report and two of us in the group did not do anything but attended to meetings and chatted on facebook during the meetings. Maybe a more divided responsibilities from start of the project would help to get rid of this problem. I guess it works like that at companies as well. Decide the rolls and let people attend to the projects knowing their responsibilities from the very start.»
- Dropped the course after 2 weeks due to difficulties to cooperate with our supervisor and that I felt unfairly treated in front of the class by him. And also due the fact that our Master Programme Coordinator have told us during one year that the course was compulsary but it showed out that it was not (asked the study center about this).»
