Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

3. How understandable are the course goals?

37 svarande

I have not seen/read the goals»11 29%
The goals are difficult to understand»2 5%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»11 29%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»13 35%

- I"ve seen them but I don"t remember. Please put a link in the evaluation form.» (I have not seen/read the goals)
- The focus of the course is not clear in the pm. » (The goals are difficult to understand)

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

27 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»1 3%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»24 88%
No, the goals are set too high»2 7%

Genomsnitt: 2.03

- the study guidelines as well as the calculation exercises i think showed what we should know after the course - but i think then the exam, especially the calculations differed from these guidelines we had» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- Maybe the theory part of the course should be more integrated with the case study... Also the case study could be shrunk a bit, is it really necessary for it to be so time consuming?» (No, the goals are set too high)

5. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

30 svarande

No, not at all»2 6%
To some extent»20 66%
Yes, definitely»6 20%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»2 6%

Genomsnitt: 2.26

- The examination level was not according given examples, exercises and exams from previous year, It was harder and longer.» (No, not at all)
- I think that it was a very strange exam! I did not recognise myself on the calculation parts at all, even after doing and understanding all recommended exercises (most of them more than once) and the old exams given on the course homepage. I think the exercises on this years exam were totally different, and not at all reflecting what we have practiced during the course. I do not feel that what I have learned in this course was what was examined. We have not practiced on solving these kind of exercises where so much assumptions should be made. They were also far more timeconsuming than previus years. From my point of view the exam-questions of this year should be so that they next year could be included in the recommended exercises since they are similar, on the same level and needs the same knowledge in order to solve them. I have written quite many exams after my five years of studying (studied something totally different for two years before my bachelor) but I have never experienced something even close like this. I felt so stupid and worthless when writing the exam. I have talked to two classmates who did not even feel that they had the time to go to the toilet on the exam, so they sat there with stummach ake instead. I do not think that is reasonable. And everybody but one student in the room where I sat was working with the exam for four hours. The exam-guards (or what they are called) had to tell people stop writing! I hope I never will never experince an exam like this again.» (No, not at all)
- i think the exam this year was harder to solve than those of the years before, that we could use to practice in advance - therefore we thought it would look similar to the material we already have, but in fact we never really practiced those kind of examples with that many unknown variables before - i think we should also get used to what we can assume and how we start working with that kind of calculation!» (To some extent)
- The calculation problems on the exam were too extensive, so there was a lack in time to finish the whole thing. I.e. showing what I know.» (To some extent)
- It did to some extent. The problem was the time. I felt like I new everything but the time to solve the problems was not nearly enough. It also felt a bit strange to have a theory question worth 9 points (30%) on just one topic (waste fired CHP plant), which at least I do not think had been discussed in that great detail.» (To some extent)
- The exam was really nasty. I think the calculation exercises were extremely unfair! No one I talked to had the time to finish... I had done all the calculations and all the handed out exams with no bigger problems, then I shouldnt be this clueless at the exam!!» (To some extent)
- The questions were directed very well but was too long.» (To some extent)
- More time would have been needed on the exam » (To some extent)
- The trickiest part of the exam was not the knowledge, but to solve equations in a certain amount of time.» (To some extent)
- The examination was way to long. Even though we know how to solve the problems, we don"t have enough time to show that we have reached the goals» (To some extent)

- The classes were really good. But for the exams, I prepared from the prescribed books and what we remember from the class. » (Some extent)
- More important parts that can"t be practiced in the calculation exercises, like flue gas cleaning, should get a more thorough treatment on the blackboard. » (Some extent)
- please when you print the slides for us, do it a bit bigger otherwise we can"t use it for studying afterwards (was to small to read from the paper)» (Large extent)

- I would say that it"s unneccesary to print the PP"s on forehand though. It"s better that you put it up on the homepage and let individualls print it. » (Great extent)

- We spent too many hours in the case study that were merely useful for solving the exercises. The exam is nor related and the case study is not graded so is too much time for the case study.» (Moderate)
- It was to much. » (Moderate)
- Maybe a bit much work in Ebsilon. It was good to get an introduction to the simulation program, but I am not sure I learned that much, since it was very hard to get an idea of what to do in terms of optimizing the plants. It just felt a bit like you built the plants and got an efficiency, but could not really improve it. Maybe there could have been 3 plants in stead of 5, and more focus on learning the means for optimization.» (Good)

- Felt a little unnecessary to go by bus 3-4 hours to be there for 2. Why didn"t we go to the big plant in Gothenburg???» (Poor)
- Visit itself was good idea. But the power plant should have better presentation. It felt like they had one presentation which they showed to everyone that visited them no matter age or status. One more specific presentation which touch oour program and also more about what one had done and will do to get i.e better efficiency. I mean mor about improvements they have done and their result.» (Poor)
- It was strange that we didn´,t get a better guiding at the power plant. We listened to some lecture for a really long time and it was hard to follow and then when we went to have a look at the components, we went through all that really fast and I didn"t understand much. » (Poor)
- Good to visit a real power plant. Good to have it in a class this early in the masters, good for team building. the presentations at the plant was quite irrelevant for our current knowledge though. Would"ve wanted the study visit to occur a couple of weeks later. » (Moderate)
- It was interesting, but maybe it should have been more clear about the importance for the exam, since 30% of the points on the exam were about this type of plant.» (Good)
- Interesting to se a real plant. Good for understanding of how everything is coupled.» (Excellent)

- Good course, but the exam makes the grade lower.» (Adequate)
- I would do it again!» (Excellent)
- The course was definately one of the courses, in which I learned the most during my whole studies!» (Excellent)

25. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- the combination of simulation work on ebsilon and the theoratical lecture»
- The case study»
- The case study»
- Lecture structure»
- more exercise study time.»
- The study visit, but be more clear about the importance.»
- the study visit, but should be prepare to more extent, beforehand. »
- Case study, case study teachers»
- the casy study, the exercise lectures»
- Case study, guest lectures of the Vattenfall guy!»
- Lectures and course content»
- The case study really helped, though the report had a lot of things that felt unnecessary, for instance the energy sensitivity analysis of a country.»
- Everything should be preserved as it was.»
- the study visit at the power plant»
- The study visit»
- The layout of the casestudy»
- Case study of a power plant operating, study visit»

26. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Relation between exam and previous examinations. Include theory preparation and summary of most important stuff. Reduce work load of case study.»
- students should be able to foresee how the calculation in the exam could look like - most of the class has the impression that is was really differnt from last years and what we practiced before»
- Att det finns riktiga lösningsgångar till dem utdelade tentorna.»
- Layout of the exam, the calculation questions where to large for the time period (especially considering that they only gave 50% of the points). It is not reasonable that the exam turns in to a calculation race when it is supposed to test your knowledge. Also 2nd question had a, in my opinion, to large an amount of the available points from the theory part.»
- More focus on the case study in the beginning so it gets less at the end.»
- I would like to see more and a wider variation of the calculation exercises.»
- The case study deadline should be moved a week earlier to give more time to revise for the exam. The calculation class should also be moved earlier, and it had been good to have received an heads up of which questions to do that corresponding to the text book and lecture»
- Perhaps Case study Report should take part in grade break down»
- Reconsider the problems on the exam, or have a 5 hour exam instead. More focus on learning optimization in Ebsilon.»
- The district heating lecture should be skipped»
- the workload of case study and the time that is needed to solve the exercises during the examination. They were very time consuming and needed excellent comprehension, in order to solve them, especially in the given time.»
- You need to stress what should be focused on in the theory!!»
- Put information on the webpage in the beginning of the course»
- The time it would take to write the exam was completely underestimated. The level of difficulty was accurate, only the steps of calculations were to many and thus to time consuming. Also it was wierd that almost 30% (8 points) of the total number of points were due to question 2. I prefer the previous exams where the different theory parts are valued to about the same extent. Funny questions, it felt like stating the first law of thermodynamics(question 1) is of a relatively small relevance in this course.»
- There could be a mid term test with bonus points for numerical"s so we have a preparation for the final exam. This time it took a long time to solve the problems during the exam and that will reflect in the whole paper.»
- Either give out recommended exercises similar to what will be examined (that means that if what we had on our exam is reasonable then the student must have something like that to practise on), or do the exam somewhat like the previous three, where the things we done in the course is examined. It should not be the first time you do it on the exam if you have done and understood all recomended exercises. Sitting on an exam not knowing what to do is terrible. Maybe if I tried an exercise like that an ordinary day studying at the university I would have done better, probably. But with all the stress there is on an exam I think it is cruel to do like that. »
- There was to little time on the exam. The difficulty level was good but the calculations took to much time so you had to rush. It felt like you didn"t have the time to show what you learned.»
- I wasn"t too happy about the exam. The content surprised me»
- Perhaps the examination should focus on knowledge. It was just tricky because of the length of the calculations...»
- Work Load for the case study»
- The exam, it should be much less focus of theory and by adding much more time. The exam was really a big drawback for the overall expression of the coarse.»
- Nothing in particular.»
- Credit some points for the case study in the exam. (Like in waste management)»
- Less time pressure on the exam»
- I think nothing, it is a very good base to understand a CHP plant operating»

27. Additional comments

- The exam was to hard. Not to difficult questions but there was to little time ==> questions get difficult when you are stressed.»
- The exam was not appreciated. Too much work in too little time, basically.»
- The time to do the exam was to short. A five hour exam would be needed for the questions on the exam. »
- Very nice course where you had plenty of time to analyze what you learn and time to reflect over the material... Not used to this at Chalmers!»
- The calculation part of the exam was way too long. The exam time of 4 hours wasn"t enough.»
- I think this course was really good, and I learnt a lot. The problem is, the exam was really unfair, it was impossible to finish on time. And if you want us to be able to make these kind of assumptions, THEN TEST US ON THAT DURING THE COURSE!!! That would not have been a problem either, but since there was no exercises that looked like this it is really hard to know what is okay to assume and what should be calculated. »
- Except for the wierd exam this was a very interesting and fun course, and though the course-literature is a bit old and full of calculation errors it was very good and instructive. Maybe the case study could"ve been deadlined one week eearlier or so, so that there would be a possibility for us to get it back before the exams. Thank you »
