Your own effort

1. How many hours per week did you spend on this course?

- I attended the first couple of lectures but found them to be a waste of time. The lecturer makes me fall asleep due to monotone voice and the lacking of variation.» (0%)
- I attended the first three lessons. Mr. Bohlin is very knowledgeable, but is probably the most boring person I have ever listened to. I was not able to learn anything during the lessons due to the incredibly slow pace and the monotone talk. Never have I seen such a detached teacher. I do understand him, if I was professor I would not want to tutor students from a completely different area that are not interested, but in that case, bring in a new teacher.» (0%)
- I only missed two lectures. The first one I was unaware of due to TimeEdit being incorrect and the second one I attended an activity by BEST Gothenburg where I informed the lecturer in advance.» (75%)
- Missed one lecture because it ran at the same time as a compulsory lecture in my other course.» (100%)

Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

I don"t know/have not been examined yet»2 13%

Genomsnitt: 2.53

- This depends on what the goals are. I am not aware of them.» (To some extent)
- I got away with writing pretty much anything on the tests, as long as it was relevant to the subject at hand. If the subject was about broadband, I would fill out the test with a large text about broadbands that barely even answered the questions. For that I got grade 4 or 5 on the tests. The academic level on the grading is non-existant.» (To some extent)

Examination: Project and take home exam

6. How long time did you spend on the take home exam?

- För varje, det var ju i tre delar.» (Less than 10 hours)
- Approximately 6 hours per test, so maybe 15 hours in total.» (Less than 10 hours)
- This is 10-20 hours per home exam. (Maybe the question should have been more clear)» (10-20 hours)
- //each exam» (20-30 hours)
- I spent quite a lot of time trying to perfect my answers to the exam questions, seemingly to no avail. The professor"s mind was set on giving all students the same grade (4). The exam questions were VERY general, I could only guess what the expected outcome of each assignment was. I did not understand which criteria were to be met in my texts in order to achieve each different grade (F, 3, 4 or 5). Not all questions on the exam had been discussed, explained, or lectured on prior to the deadline. I would have learned much more had the professor given us more information on all subjects before I had to analyze the issues.» (30-40 hours)
- I would estimate I spent about one day per home exam question.» (30-40 hours)

7. Howl long time did you spend on the project?

10-20 hours»8 44%

More than 40 hours»1 5%

Genomsnitt: 2.55

- Approximately 6 hours.» (Less than 10 hours)
- If this question is referring to the group project, it was NOT a good experience. I landed in a group of people I didn"t know and who had totally different academic ambitions. Their English was below average and I had to spend a lot of time spell checking and correcting their grammar instead of concentrating on the actual subject. This resulted in a paper I was unhappy with but had to turn in anyway because I thought it was embarrassing to tell them that I wanted to re-do the whole thing.» (10-20 hours)

8. What grade would you give the take home exam as a means to learning?

- The only time I spent studying was for the exams and projects, so what I learned came from there. I"m not sure how much I did learn though.» (Average)
- It is a good and different way of learning to think for yourself and explore new literature and topics. It is always nice to practice writing as well.» (Good)

- Did this in combination with my bachelor"s project.» (High)
- As I was taking a project course which consumed a lot of time but also as I was taking three courses. Otherwise I would put it as high.» (Too high)

Summarizing questions

17. What is your general impression of the course?

18 svarande

Poor»2 11%
Fair»6 33%
Adequate»2 11%
Good»4 22%
Excellent»4 22%

Genomsnitt: 3.11

- Hard to know what to do write in the text since it is what the examiner thinks about the text, not something right or wrong» (Fair)
- I am disappointed. It has potential to be a really interesting course but it is much too unfocused and scattered, both in material and lectures.» (Fair)
- Really gives an insight into the field of technology and society. Makes it different from the standard calculations and theory that you have to learn.» (Excellent)

18. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- Bra med hemtentor.»
- Dividing the home exam to 3 different ones instead of one big examination should be preserved, I believe it helps with both relating to the course content and distributing the workload.»
- The spread of the home exams and project.»
- 3 separate home exams was great and distributed workload over the entire course, not just the last week so keep that up!»

19. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Mer genomtänkta frågor till hemtentorna..»
- The questions of the home examinations where very general, the questions should be explained better and maybe more thoroughly written.»
- Try to encourage more students to participate if it is their first time taking the course. Maybe make it mandatory to attend the lectures? Although those who attended are the ones who are actually interested in the topic. So maybe those who do not attend should be removed from the course and informed of the reason.»
- faster feedbacks on exams/project etc. Maybe add a lecture on how you are supposed to write the different essays e.g reflection paper, home exams, project. biggest issue is the feedback on the tasks. dont just return a score on tasks. provide feedback on how the student can improve!»
- The idea with the MTS courses is good. I do like the fact that technology is put in perspective and that we are to learn about technology"s role in society. The Technology and society course covers interesting topics and strikes me as overall thought through and well designed. The material covered is relevant and I find it interesting. With that said, I was very disappointed when I found the lectures unbearable. On the tests, I could get away with writing pretty much anything, and still get grade 4 or 5. The academic level is non-existent. It should not be possible to spend such little time on a course and still get high grades. I find this disrespectful to me as a student and to Chalmers as an educational institute. When speaking with my friends who have taken other MTS courses, the quality of these courses seem to be a big problem overall. It is obvious to me that these courses do not work. Since they are pretty different from what we normally read, it is all the more important that they are good and are held by teachers who wants to teach. A bad course is of course never good, but other courses can get away with it more easily, since they are obviously more relevant to the program. With the MTS courses, this is different. I will speak to programlinjen about these problems, and I have already spoken to the student union. I have asked quite a few students about their MTS experiences, and none have been good. This needs to change, or the courses need to be removed from the program.»

20. Additional comments

- could be improved by showing documentaries»
- I have learnt a lot about policy, regulations and sustainability with respect to technology. How we as engineers can have an impact and bring about change, not always relying on what everyone else says like our managers and being able to research ourselves.»
- Intresting topics, but it could be presented in a more intresting way»
- great and very interesting course!»
- The extra bonus points available only to SOME students (those who did not have compulsory bachelor thesis presentations) is extremely unjust. There should have been another option. I worked very hard in this course and did my best to fulfill all requirements despite having almost no idea what they were. It shouldn"t be impossible to get a good grade just because the professor is "stingy" and has already made up his mind as to what grades to hand out before the course has begun...»
