Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

The aims of KBT090 are that the students should gain a quantitative understanding of different types of bioreactors and cultivation technologies, and obtain knowledge concerning the different demands on cultivation conditions and process control offered by various cell systems such as bacteria, yeast, filamentous fungi as well as higher eukaryotes. Another aim of the course is that students should develop engineering competences like working with models, working with complex, open-ended problems, and communicating scientific problems in written and oral form.


The learning outcomes are:
(After completion of this course, the student should be able to):

- Design common microbial cultivation techniques such as batch-, fed-batch and chemostat cultures

- Make quantitative descriptions of growth and metabolic behaviour in various microbial cell cultivation systems using mathematical modeling and simulation in Matlab

- Choose suitable cultivation techniques and cell systems for various manufacturing and research purposes and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various possibilities

- Design metabolically based control strategies for cultivation of different cell systems such as bacteria, yeast, filamentous fungi and higher eukaryotes.

- Formulate and communicate a proposal for a biotechnological research or development project, including choice of model organism, cultivation techniques, and analytical techniques.

- Show awareness of important industrial applications of microbiology

- every part of this course is great!»
- The literature assignment and the simulation exercise! What I learned in this course I learned from those exercises.»
- guest lectures, study visit to denmark, about the matlab exercise: for next year the group composition should be the same as this year, mix chalmers with international students, otherwise it"s really hard and more frustrating instead of instructive and interesting. »
- Simuleringsuppgiften! Lärde sig massor och man kände nu efter många års slit att man äntligen lärt sig matlab och kan på egen hand skriva ett program »

- The main problem is the work load, however you get a lot of credit for the work. »
- Better info about how the points are handed out and how you pass the course.»
- both projects took quite a long time to work on, maybe to set the deadline a little later during this term if possible. »
- Både Calle och lisbeth gick igenom vad de ville ha utav inlämningarna EFTER men lämnat in uppgifterna, jag vet inte vad det ska tjäna till! Gör det antingen ordentligt innan eller inte alls! Ganska låg sannolikhet att man gör så som ni tänker er det! Om ni nu ska ha upplägget med bonuspoäng, vilket är väldigt bests och motiverande, så tycker jag att man ska få reda på vilken poäng man har INNAN tentan! Annars tjänar dom ju inte så mycket till! För mig är bonudpoängen till för att hörvärda mig mindre nervös inför en tenta! Jag tycker även om att under tentan görs ett överslag på när jag tror jag klarat godkänt och då är det lättare att slappna av och prestera till en högre betygsnivå! Jag tror att avdelningen till att Calle inte ville sägs bonus poängen på simuleringen var för att alla skulle plugga till tentan även om man bara behövde ta få poäng på den ! Jag tycker det är ett resonemang som inte håller, om jag som person är nöjd med enbart godkänt i kursen sÅ ska jag välgång vara det? Då har jag ju redan presterat det jag måste men under hela läsperioden och inte vara sista veckan! Är inte det bra??! »
- International students have the same problem of struggling in understanding and applying MATLAB. Advance preparation should be given prior to the start of the course. It is difficult to catch up once the study period starts because of other accummulating work load from the course itself and other courses. »
