Learning outcomes

With "learning outcomes" we mean the knowledge, understanding, skills and perspectives you are expected to reach.

After course ARK146, students should be able to
- describe and analyse the built environment as a resource (cultural, architectural, technical, environmental and economical)
- describe and analyse views, ideas and policies that are practiced by different professions and stake-holders in the process of conservation and transformation
- analyse and reflect on the relation between cultural and architectural values
- analyse and reflect on the relation between architectural design and building technique in an historical perspective
- be in the know of building materials and craft from historical and contemporary periods, and how they can be combined and applied today
- apply the knowledge and understanding in a conservation process, and cooperate with other professionals

5. Think about the amount of the parts componing the course. Do you think they are...*

Matrisfråga

- It is hard (impossible?) to fit the amount of work necessary to be satisfied with the result within the scheduled time for the course. »
- Would have preferred to have more time for the last project.»
- the selection of literature was excellent and the supporting literature-seminar was very helpfull to follow the own interests in the topic»
- Både en uppsats och en designuppgift är ganska mycket, en av dem hade räckt.»
- Tutoring does not helped me much.»
- I think the research could have been made more interesting by letting us select different topics right from the start and work in teams and present our findings to each other. This would also have a teambuilding function.»
- Too many assignments, even all of them were interesting. But maybe you could have skipped some om the obligatory and literature. Or given more time to read... The project part was interesting, but it is impossible to make it into a sketch. The amount of work i"ve put into this course doesn"t correspond to the points. At least not if compared to other 7,5 points courses.»

- Roberto Cattaneo is a perfect assistant and organizer!» (Very well)
- Thank you Inger Lise and Roberto especially for giving us all the information and even informing us about updates on the course-homepage which would be up to us to check regularly. It was impossible to miss any information. You made us feel being very well taken care of.» (Very well)
- I am very much in favor of schedules being distributed by email. And all oral announcements about the schedule should state clearly whether something is being changed or it is a reminder of schedule as usual. This is because sometimes where there are reminders of schedule proceeding as usual I feel I need to compare it with the distributed schedule to see if anything has changed.» (No opinion)

- It was too mant assignment on too little time. There were no time left for the project in the end.» (Bad)
- I had two courses to select from since I went to reality studio in Kenya. I think it should have been made clearer before the selection which courses I was limited to. I was told conservation as well as design systems were recommended (but not that they were my only options). Thus I considered all courses and eventually selected a project management course. It was not possible so I quickly decided one of the two recommended courses. » (Passed)
- I had big interest in the topic before and i feel much more educated about the whole conservational background now. I am going to continue studying the topic and I am very glad that this course is existing. I wouldn"t have had the opportunity to study this at my home-university. » (Very good)
- very interesting course. I felt like the teachers and assistents put in effort to make everything work well. Nice with wine and party at the end. really small gestures makes it easier to work harder because you feel that the teachers care and that they work as well. That is quite rare, but that was the case in this course. The only bad thing is the amount of work that is required. It is way too much!!» (Very good)

11. What should be preserved next year?*

- The good spirit! »
-
- I liked the workshop about Helsingör, that was really good to get insight in the different stakeholders opinions!»
- Last project.»
- everything»
- tutoring and seminars»
- the extraordinarily good organisation. the group tasks, such as discussions, literature seminar»
- Study visits»
- Designuppgiften.»
- the various of introduction for concepts»
- tutoring - study trip and meeting with municipalities and actors - lectures from actors in icomos or conservation projects underwork (kya "s lecture)»
- guest lecturers, motivate student, positive and dynamic energy, combine fun and learning»
- no opinion»
- To me all the student should be recommended to work in same site so that every one have same background about project.otherwise those who choose site from outside Sweden they might face in with misunderstanding about their project that they can not clarify due to time limitation.»
- lectures»
-
- lectures»
- The literature seminare was really good.»
- Study visit, Roberto.»
- Having the possibility to apply the giving knowledge about conservation on to a design proposal»
- The last project»
- Jukka Jokileto had good lectures, especially the exampled that he showed were good. Roberts lecture was also good for supporting the reading.»
- the main content, site study. seminars(hopefully more since the relevant issues are many), the assignment»
- The literature seminar. The project, but with more time. »
- Everything, it is a very good course and I have learned a lot! All of the teachers have been fantastic and Roberto has done a superb job! I loved the little gathering we had in the end with wine and cheese, it was nice! :)»
- the workshop and lecture»
- workshop with different world heritage sites»

12. What should be changed next year?*

- I could have been good to have the literature seminar before the hand in of the essay. »
-
- I think it was really unfortunate that the hand-in of the essay, the PAD and the literature seminar were so close to each other. I had the flu just that week, and it was tough to catch up with everything after that. »
- I think it"s to much focus on the world heritage list. Feels like I"m a turist on a tour on the lectures.»
- more tutoring»
- more criticism from tutors»
- maybe more time for the course. It feltlike being over to quick. a practical task, like a wrkshop (e.g. in Karlskrona as it was the study trip destination this year) to work with a chosen site at the site and really face the process of developing an idea with all its stakeholders involved. If this would be possible it would be an amazing addition.»
- Some of the lectures were really uninteresting and/or irrelevant. Also, sometimes a necessary lecture became boring due to too much theory and too few examples. Being given an example of how a document is put into practice is much more interesting than just hearing of how and when it was created.»
- Kanske överväga att hoppa över uppsatsen, även om man faktiskt lär sig mycket av att skriva den.»
- maybe should introduce more pratical case in details and more knowledge of technology»
- the two tutoring may be spread over a longer time in order to have much reflection between (3 days is too short)»
- More chances for tutoring, more credits (hec)»
- no opinion»
- The amount of literature better to be reduced because and more focus on final assignment.»
- assignment quantity, a good essay with tutoring I think it would be more than enough.»
-
- less literature»
- Either take away the project or you take away the essay and give more time for the project. »
- none»
- Give more time to the design proposal. Expand the litterature seminare to a whole day and skip the essay. The essay felt like it was squeesed in and little time was given to write it. Better to have possibility to discuss issues during a longer seminar.»
- Fewer assignments, more time for the project.»
- I think less of the reading should be mandatory and more space given to selection of study focus. I think more group work would be good. The seminar was maybe a bit sturdy only because students weren"t so used to interacting with each other in this course.»
- the combination with reality studio might adjust e.g., different tasks for the assignment 3&4 for those go to Africa, or different time plan for them.»
- More discussions and more thoughts and opinions about conservation. it is really a subject that can be discussed.»
- Perhaps there should be either focus on the essay OR the design proposal, having both was a little bit too much! Either you do a great essay or you have time to do a REAL detailed design proposal. After all it is just a small course that gives 7,5 cedits!»
- more lectures»
- too much literature to read»

13. Other comments

- Though sometimes a bit uninteresting and slow, I am pleased with the result from the course... I feel that I have learned something. However, I don"t think the course also managed to make me more interested in the field of conservation, but rather cooled down my interest a little.»
- very nice teachers»
- I have learned a lot from this course anyway!»
- I think the issue of conservation is a very interesting one and it has many sides. But I think I would not want to work with it from within government/municipality but rather from a private angle. Therefore I think there was to much weight on theory and regulations and to little space for exploration of methods and experimentation.»
- The overall time for working and studying on this course is quite short compare to the content and aim of the course.»
