- since i had 3 courses this period, i did not have just as much time as i would like to, the projects and han in problems did take quite a few hours every week» (Around 25 hours/week)
- Probably more around the project deadlines.» (Around 30 hours/week)
- The pedagogic in the course is good, but it is way to much for 7.5 hp.» (Around 30 hours/week)

- I dont remember the goals but i have seen them» (The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn)
- And i learned them, not that it helped on the exam..» (The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn)

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

- The exam questions are set too hard. The lecturer mentioned that this is in order for him to differentiate between then different grade for the students. However, if the exam are set so hard, it is even harder for them to even pass.» (No, not at all)
- The projects were an indication on how well we had learned the goals, but not everyone contributed equally to the projects, and teachers and TA"s expect too much of us» (To some extent)
- Something was not explained during the course» (To some extent)
- Tentan var lite för svår, speglade inte svårighetsnivån på resten av kursen.» (To some extent)

- The TA should go through the studio exercise instead of just sitting in the classroom.» (Small extent)
- Went to the first, then I didn"t attend anymore. There is not enough time in the course. And you have also a second course to pass.» (Small extent)
- It helped some for the hand in"s and the projects, not for the exam.» (Some extent)

8. To what extent has the tutorial sessions been of help for your learning?

Small extent»10 35%
Some extent»11 39%

Genomsnitt: 1.92

- only attended the two first » (Small extent)
- What is thaught on the tutorial sessions does NOT reflect the exam in the LEAST..» (Small extent)
- I think these were to few and very missguided. They were all about math, transformations and random processes, but I would have needed tutorials with technical questions to. I think the tutorials should match the course and the exam, so that if you have a good grip of the tutorials you will have a good shot at the exam. Especially when there are not a lot of old exams avialable.» (Small extent)
- Went to the first, then I didn"t attend anymore. There is not enough time in the course. And you have also a second course to pass.» (Small extent)
- the TA was late and not always clear» (Some extent)

- Big disconnect between projects and the rest of the course. Created a lot of confusion.» (Small extent)
- There are too many project to do.» (Some extent)
- Since i had to do them all by myself, sure, not that it helped on the exam.» (Large extent)
- Good, but not as strongly connected to the course material as it should be. The concepts of OFDM,QPSK and Cyclic prefix had not been covered in the lecures or the other material. One where left with google and lecture notes from other universities avaliable there. A recomendation for next year: Either devote a lecture to careful explanation or change the project topic. This aside, a good excercise in general concepts!» (Large extent)
- I really, really like how Ingemar handles the oral exams, so that it is not just an exam but I have learnt very much on those.» (Large extent)
- Keep them! » (Great extent)
- Great subjects.» (Great extent)

10. To what extent has the hand-in problems been of help for your learning?

Large extent»8 29%
Great extent»7 25%

Genomsnitt: 2.7

- Only the second hand in did give any real learning. The first one was just a struggle with math and didn"t really show anything useful while the third one was already given to you and basically copy pase. Did not help at all for understanding.» (Small extent)
- The hand-in problem has not much link to the course literature.» (Small extent)
- We have just enough time to complete them, the short deadline doesnt allow for any deeper understanding in the subjects.» (Some extent)
- As opposed to the projects, good connection to the rest of the course!.» (Large extent)
- Keep them! » (Great extent)
- Good subjects. But they need to be clearer what is supposed to be handed in. Handin3 I thought you only needed a well commented MATLAB-code, but wanted a report.» (Great extent)

11. To what extent has the course literature and other material been of help for your learning?

Small extent»4 14%

- I think the book is very bad at letting you get a grip of the subject. It has all the details, but it is almost like you have to wikipedia all the concepts before you can start reading the book. Neither the introductions to the chapter or the summaries of them give you a grip of the chapter.» (Small extent)
- did not have book» (Small extent)
- The book was really methodical and good paced.» (Large extent)
- Good job on the lecture notes uploaded to the website, and the book is comprehensive and gives examples.» (Large extent)
- The textbook is good.» (Great extent)

12. How well did the course administration, web page, handouts etc work?

Very badly»0 0%
Rather badly»3 11%
Rather well»16 59%
Very well»8 29%

Genomsnitt: 3.18

- Tasks for projects and hand-in problems should have been posted earlier. » (Rather badly)
- long time to evaluate projects and hand-in» (Rather well)
- But i think you were generally to slow at uploading information.» (Rather well)
- Very annoying when hand-ins are late published» (Rather well)

Study climate

13. How were the opportunities for asking questions and getting help?

27 svarande

Very poor»2 7%
Rather poor»3 11%
Rather good»9 33%
Very good»11 40%
I did not seek help»2 7%

Genomsnitt: 3.29

- The only answer we got when asking for help was questions like "What do you think?". So much guesswork went in to the first project, a and b. It is a shame since I really would like to have a firm grasp on OFDM instead of guessing how all of it works.» (Very poor)
- This is my biggest gripe, ONE single chance to ask questions regarding project 2, the day before deadline? Ridiculous.» (Very poor)
- My answer will be somewhat coloured by my educational background, as my familiarity with the basic concepts of the course was limited. Anyway, my comment regards the help with and around the three projects, where the attitude from the responsible person was all other than helpfull. An example: My group had been putting substantial ammount of time into how we were going to attack the problem, performed several simulations, scrutinized the code, but did not get things to work. We then went to the consultation hour to ask for help, a new angle or maybe a push in the right direction. The answer we was given was more or less, " I know how to do this, but I wont help you, this you should figure out your self". For us it meant that we did not really grasp what we where doing even after the hand in was made. This happend again for the second part of the project, and it left us wondering what the teachers role in the projects really were? Is he not there to aid us in the learning process? » (Rather poor)
- Ashkan is great! » (Very good)

14. How well has cooperation between you and your fellow students worked?

26 svarande

Very poorly»1 3%
Rather poorly»2 7%
Rather well»7 26%
Very well»16 61%
I did not seek cooperation»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 3.46

- I"m not allowed to say that I sought cooperation here, am I? Which I think is quite bad. At the first lecture you were all about pedagogics, but then suddenly we can"t talk to each other about the work. And helping each other is the best way to learn.» (?)
- I had the misfortune to end up in a group where i was the only one that worked.» (Very poorly)
- It was good that we were able to pick our project members. Me and my friend ended up with an unknown person though, and he performed so badly that we had to exclude him.» (Rather well)
- We had a student in our projectgroup which did not do his part. We discussed this and he left the group.» (Rather well)

15. How was the course workload?

26 svarande

Too low»0 0%
Low»1 3%
Adequate»3 11%
High»10 38%
Too high»12 46%

Genomsnitt: 4.26

- High but not too high. However, you shouldn"t say that we "won"t have to study for the exam since we will learn so much during the course". That is just misguiding.» (?)
- This goes without saying. Remove one of the hand-ins and let us get more points no the other two.» (Too high)
- The projects took up too much time, hadn"t much time to study exercises.» (Too high)
- The projects were great for learning, although they took a lot of time. The hand in assignments didn"t help with the learning though. They just created extra stress.» (Too high)
- The course lecturer opened the first lecture with a statement going something like this: "Most of you will hate this course when you are taking it, but will come to me afterwards saying how good it was" and describing the experience as "... getting hit in the head with a hammer, of course you are happy when it stops!". I find it realy remarkable that a course that in previous years have had evalutations rating it as too hard with a workload well above the average, and where the responsible teacher is aware that it is really hard can continue in more or less the same form. My point is that it is still 7.5 HEC, with a projected workload of 25 hours a week, and if the course staff are aware that this is not how the course is percieved by the students, something should change!. A change in the pedagogic approach ( se the comment regarding questioning )? A decrease in the course contents? More credits and time? or maybe higher prerequisites? The last point applies specially to me since I found it hard to absorb and understand the course in ways I am used to. I realize that this ofcourse is on me, since the course was electable at my program, but it should not be possible to be admitted to a advanced level course in signal processing without having a full course in transforms or signals and systems in your bachelors degree. In this I was definately not alone. » (Too high)
- Great course, but it far extends the 7.5 hp.» (Too high)

16. How was the total workload this study period?

27 svarande

Too low»1 3%
Low»1 3%
Adequate»2 7%
High»6 22%
Too high»17 62%

Genomsnitt: 4.37

- There should be a Very High option before Too High. » (High)
- Shouldn"t put digital communications together with applied signals, the workload is quite high.» (Too high)
- I barely had time to look at my other courses.» (Too high)
- I was following another course out of the master program» (Too high)
- Far too many hand-ins and projects in both this course and Linear Control System Design. The worst period so far at Chalmers (in terms of work load).» (Too high)
- See above, unfortunaltely this forces you to neglect part of the other course you are taking.» (Too high)
- 11 different things to hand in in to courses...» (Too high)

Summarizing questions

17. What is your general impression of the course?

26 svarande

Poor»2 7%
Fair»3 11%
Adequate»7 26%
Good»9 34%
Excellent»5 19%

Genomsnitt: 3.46

- There must be a greater connection between the classes and hand ins/projects to keep the course interesting and useful. As it is now is not good at all for understanding.» (Poor)
- It was the worst period in my life, if that tells you anything.» (Poor)
- Work load is too demanding.» (Fair)
- I guess I need to know all these stuff, but filter isn"t that fun.» (Adequate)
- Course organization was a bit chaotic. Prof. McKelvey was often making typos in formulas at the lectures.» (Adequate)
- The examination style was very good.» (Good)
- Probably never had this much to do in a course but, I"ve never learned as much in one course either. It was super! » (Excellent)

18. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- Course litterature.»
- The lectures»
- Project and hand-in»
- Hand-ins & Projects»
- The hand-ins, they were awesome.»
- The projects!»
- the project »
- Yinan as TA :-)»
- Textbook. »
- the projects!»

19. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- The projects and hand ins.»
- Ammount of hand-ins and number of help-sessions for the projects.»
- The lecture-room (way to small)»
- Try to reduce the amount of work»
- The projects, too much time on searching for small programming errors in hundreds of lines of code instead of studying exercises.»
- The hand-in"s. Cooperation basically ALWAYS enhance the learning for both persons. Restricting the students from discussing the assignments just limits.»
- The number of project and hand-in assignment.»
- the handin problem»
- All handins and projects are good, but you need to reduce them somehow.»
- 1) Please, introduce lecture slides!!! 2) It could be better to merge projects 1A and 1B into one and write only one report instead of two, because the course is extremely time-consuming.»
- nothing»
- studiosessions. necessary to scheudle these sessions? could d them on our own.»

20. Additional comments

- The exam did NOT NOT NOT reflect what we learned on the course, absolutely ridiculous, someone should be confronted about this.»
- There is excessive assignments and projects to be done throughout the study period, causing students to have lesser time to concentrate on the main syllabus. The project marking is too stringent. Moreover, the assignment questions are too ambiguous and vague.»
- give some directions about the handin problem»
- none»
- The last hand-in deadline was pushed a week. This made me very upset since the deadline was pushed AFTER the first deadline has passed. Since i had already worked very hard to complete the hand-in tot he first deadline i was very angry when this work was not rewarded. »
