Genomsnitt: 2.6

- Even tho the goals describe it well, the teacher didn"t so put more effort in it next time» (The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn)

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

To some extent»5 55%
Yes, definitely»2 22%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»0 0%

- Don"t think remembering answers to problems is a good way. Write different, but similar questions do the questions as hand ins. Also, man questions from one specific lecture (Danilovs) and not a single one from others like Isacsson or Kubatkin. » (To some extent)

Teaching and course administration

6. To what extent has the teaching been of help for your learning?

10 svarande

7. To what extent has the course literature and other material been of help for your learning?

10 svarande

Small extent»4 40%
Some extent»3 30%
Large extent»3 30%
Great extent»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 1.9

- A compendium would have been awesome to have. » (Small extent)
- No lecture material only lecture slights which was nowhere near enough» (Small extent)
- The slides and further reading were helpful» (Small extent)
- The lack of course literature made it difficult to find basic knowledge and the reading material from the lectures was research articles. Interesting but it takes time to read and there are also many things that are expected to be basic knowledge and aren’,t explained in these articles. Reading materials about the basics for each area would be good or that it is better explained during lecture.» (Some extent)

8. How well did the course administration, web page, handouts etc work?

10 svarande

Very badly»5 50%
Rather badly»3 30%
Rather well»2 20%
Very well»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 1.7

- no information flux at all» (Very badly)
- The guest lecturers did not seem to know what was expected of us or them, we did not know important things about the examination (i.e. how much of grades from project/written exam, and what was expected of the project). The course as a whole was good, but better administration is needed. The simplest would be to gather all information in a course pm and put it on course homepage.» (Very badly)
- The information on the homepage was not complete. The handouts regarding information about the research proposal was handed out to late and could give clearer guidelines. Information didn’,t reach the whole way to us students and it seemed to me that many of the lecturers didn’,t know how the questions to check the attendance were thought to work. There was a lot of confusion about what was to be done and it caused to me a reluctant to work with the course. » (Very badly)
- Dont change things like examtime, what to have on exam the day before! this should be clear the first/second week so the students have time to prepare it all! The handouts should be updated at the same time as the lecture or some days after, not weeks like it was on some lecture notes! Put all the Homework problems in a separate pdf-file or similar format for easy finding and reading. » (Rather well)

- Too many persons that are too busy. The support time was empty of teachers!» (Rather poor)
- The times when I needed help with the home work the professors where very helpful.» (Rather good)
- The problem was not the lecturers will to answer questions but to find them. There were many different lecturers and they all sits in different buildings and it caused a lot of running to go and ask a question.» (Rather good)

Course specific questions

13. How do you think the teachers should evaluate the proposals?

- Thought-through idea, like how much has been though through. How well prepared is the idea when we presented them. Can one follow the proposal to do the idea?»
- with respect of the bad organisation and the bad information and time compressing because of the very short time and that it was for everyone the first time they did a proposal»
- teachers should evaluate the proposals by oral presentation»
- How well preperad they are, i.e. how much info there exists on previous work, how much info on the proposed work etc.»
- This is not for me to say. I have never read a research proposal and cannot say how it should be evaluated.»
- Anything about proposal should be made clear from the beginning i.e format, grading, etc»

14. Do you think the research proposal is a good examination form?

10 svarande

No, not at all»0 0%
Not really»2 20%
Yes, OK»4 40%
Yes, very good»4 40%

Genomsnitt: 3.2

- It could be if we got preparing and support time which was not the case» (Not really)
- the teacher should present how the research proposal work in the first week of the course (and show a good proposal from last year)» (Yes, OK)
- I really like the idea and when the teachers make this part better the overall of the course will be much better. Hopefully they will give a good example how a proposal is written and things like that so we should know how it is done. And: also give us that in time and not like this time! » (Yes, OK)
- If evaluation standard (or minimum requirement) is stated clearly before hand, I think research proposal works well as examination.» (Yes, OK)
- At first I though it was too difficult, but then I started liking it a lot. The difficult part was to come up with an idea. This should be more helped. We are very new in this field so it is difficult for us. » (Yes, very good)
- Captures the spirit of the course well.» (Yes, very good)
- I think it is a very good way of examination though it should be kept in mind that it is, for most, the first time to write a research proposal. More guiding form lecturers and help to start earlier in the period would be good. Also clearer guidelines for the structure of a research proposal.» (Yes, very good)

Summarizing questions

15. What is your general impression of the course?

10 svarande

Poor»4 40%
Fair»3 30%
Adequate»0 0%
Good»3 30%
Excellent»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 2.2

- I would not take the course again» (Poor)
- The main idea is very good to get an overwiew about the different topics of nanoscience but everything else which was related to the course was bad» (Poor)
- I had high hopes on the course and it might be there for I’,m so disappointed. There is nothing wrong with the content of the course, the problem was the organization of it. » (Poor)
- Problem with organisation» (Fair)
- There could have been more dialog between the guest lectures, we don"t need to here the basic of plasmonics two or three times in a course.» (Good)

16. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- Research proposal, questions after lecture»
- the overview of the different topics of nanoscience»
- research proposal»
- collaboration with different teachers and showing different study fields with researches»
- General format, as the course gives a good overview of the nano-field.»
- The research proposal!»
- Sending comments to teachers. Lectures from various research group.»
- Proposal presentation. It was a great assignment.»

17. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- ORGANISATION! I had very little time to write the proposal because we got the information the last week. Also do not say how the exam will be and what we can bring 1730 the day before the exam!»
- the organisation and the timemanagement»
- A better presentation of what is expected for the proposal..»
- A bit of more time should be spent about the background concepts and be more clear about the research proposals.»
- Better information»
- The organization! Before the course starts following things should be decided: How exam and proposal are weighted in grading of the course. Ex 40/60 Guidelines for research proposal and an example (not only possible idea but also how it could be written). How the proposal should be graded (what are the most important parameters ex. is it the idea, that it seems doable, that it is well written or that the proposal consist of certain parts mm). And last to make a course pm whit the most important information. To make it easier for the students it would be good with one support session for problems. »
- Evaluation standard should be stated before classes begin. For example, - portion of written exam and presentation - how to evaluate presentation (what should be included in the presentation)»
- More varied topics»

18. Additional comments

- if the course will not be really much improved the course should be cancelled»
- the course has potential to be really good with better organization.»
- My thoughts: Lectures: Instead of having 3 lectures per week make it 4-5 and all the lectures can be completed before week 5. the rest of the period will be for proposal and problem solving. This also give more time to find a suitable project and time with the teacher for discussing and hopefully it will be presented as better written proposals. Clever Question: Also make a list that we shall sign after each lesson, and not only the clever question. I have seen people not attend to the lecture and still sent in questions and with that got a "been on lecture approved". This is not ok!! I like the idea with the clever question but maybe have that as an option for getting a higher grade in the course? The exam: If we have more time with problemsolving with the teachers the exam would be better, as it is now it is a little to messy. All the lectures are powerpoints and with minimum calculations and the exam are based upon calculation! So some basic time with teacher when we calculate and the exam will improve. This would tho mean that a higher level would be needed to pass but I dont think that is a problem.»
- About supporting time, it some teacher isn"t available, I think the person should suggest alternative supporting time (and upload the information on the website). If the travel is long, it"s better to find representative. About proposal, lectures can be dense (4times a week) at first-half quarter to get longer time between lectures and proposal. About homework, I was feeling there was some gap between problems and lectures. I know that the lecture time is limited, but I wanted more approach toward homework problems. So I think sample question and sample answer is needed (then students can follow at home). Exam questions can be different (but related) this case. Or dedicated support session for exam is needed.»
- This is very interesting topics yet the management could be done better»
